2 Page 2 Fr. Mass' Column > This Sunday, June 5 th, is "GODPARENTS DAY". At baptism, godparents asked the Church for faith for their godchild and pledged to help them adhere to the teachings of the Catholic Church. On Godparents Day every Godparent should make a special effort to contact their god children about spiritual matters. God children should also contact their Godparents. Encourage your god children to frequent the sacraments, give them a rosary, scapular, or great spiritual reading. > Next weekend, June 11 & 12, we will have a special second collection for the retired priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago. This is not to be confused with the collection that we take up every December for Retired Religious. That is for members of religious orders. This collection will go to support retirement and health care benefits for our own Archdiocesan retired priests. Benefits for Archdiocesan priests are administered by the Priests Retirement and Mutual Aid Association [PRMAA], and supported by parish assessments, personal contributions and bequests from priests, and occasional grants from the Archdiocese. With an increasing number of retired clergy, increases in the costs of medical care and nursing home care, these sources are no longer adequate. As a [former and soon to be again] retired priest I have somewhat of a personal stake in this collection. Please be generous in your response to this appeal for support for the retired priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago. > On Thursday, June 9, the 8:30 morning mass will be the final all school liturgy, marking the end of our school year. We pray that all our children have a happy, healthy and productive summer. Now that schools are out for the summer, drivers please be careful, especially on side streets. > I am pleased to announce that our principal search committee unanimously decided to offer a contract to a new principal for our school and she has accepted. Her name is Melissa Wilson and she comes to us from St. Cajetan School on the southwest side of Chicago where she has been a junior high science teacher for the last eleven years. She is very familiar with and committed to the STEM program and other educational innovations that we have here at St. Louis de Montfort. We believe that she is a fine fit for our school. I want to thank the school parents who served with Fr. Stan and myself on the search committee. They are Tess McGillicuddy, Tony Ontiveras and Adria Vlna. They represented well the concerns of parents and did an outstanding job of determining what we were looking for in a new principal and asking questions that surfaced those attributes during the interview. I am confident that we can look forward to very good and productive school year.
3 Page 3 Message of the Week The Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Luke 7:11-17 A survey of the Gospels reveals many ways in which Jesus upheld the dignity of women. In a culture where women were considered second-class citizens, Jesus was never afraid to encounter women, to affirm them, and to welcome them among his followers. Here we see that his heart was stirred by the situation of this grieving mother. The man who had died was the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. In this culture, a woman was protected by her father, her husband, or her son. Absent one of those men in her life, she was in an incredibly vulnerable position. This, along with the grief of losing her child, struck the Lord with pity. And then, he did the impossible and restored the dead man to life. After the dead man sat up... Jesus gave him to his mother. Jesus made a point to restore and affirm this woman s vocation as a mother. Christ himself reveals, through his ministry to this mother, that her role is vital. May we also find ways to affirm and serve the mothers in our midst. Question of the Week: Luke tells us that fear seized the people who saw Jesus raise the widow s son from the dead. What do you think they were afraid of? RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS Recently Fr. Stan, Judy Mitchell [our rel. ed. Secretary], Eileen Sheedy [our interim coordinator] and myself sat down to evaluate our Religious Education Program and plan for its future. The results of that meeting are as follows: >The program will retain its current schedule of alternate Saturday mornings from 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon >The tuition is reduced to $225 for 1 child, $275 for 2 children, $325 for 3 or more children >Sacramental fees are $40 for First Communion [2 nd. grade] and $65 for Confirmation [8 th. Grade] >We have hired a part-time Coordinator for the program. We will need to recruit additional Catechists and provide training for them. Our goal is to have all Catechists certified. >We are joining the local Religious Education Cluster to provide support and training for our program >Registration will be open. If you would like more information on any aspect of this program if you would like to register your children if you would like to volunteer as a Catechist if you would like to help in any way please call the parish office at
