2 Page 2 Strive to enter the narrow gate Jesus tells all of us today! What does this really mean? The Church is reminding us of three things in today's Gospel passages. First, that heaven exists. This is the banquet in the Kingdom of God, the way Jesus describes salvation and eternal life. Second, that hell exists. This is what's outside that banquet, where there is wailing and grinding of teeth, as Jesus said, the hopeless frustration that the human soul experiences when it is cut off forever from friendship with God. Thirdly, that in order to hopefully make it to Heaven, we need to acknowledge that nothing we can do on our own will help, only by God s grace is eternal life possible, and then, we have to keep on doing our part as disciple of Christ. It is not enough to have a superficial knowledge of Christ, like the people who said in today s gospel, We ate and drank in your company and you taught in our streets. Rather, we have to have a living, lasting and growing relationship with Jesus. That is what we were created for, and that is what will lead us to true life. This is what Jesus means by the narrow gate that leads to salvation. To get through a narrow gate, we have to leave behind all of our excess baggage we have brought before the gate. We have to go through it on purpose. It is possible to be labeled a Christian on the outside without really making an effort to follow the Christian way in our hearts. Jesus knows that going through the motions isn't enough; we need to let His grace change our behaviors in our lives. At one point in today s gospel, someone asks Jesus if only a few people will be saved. We don't know who the questioner was - maybe a widower, or a mother who had recently lost a child. It was someone who believed in eternal life, but was wondering if it was as hard to attain as the Pharisees and Sadducees taught during Jesus time. That few people will be saved was the opinion of the Pharisees, ancient Israel's religious experts, and their teaching was the prevailing view. In our culture today, the prevailing view is just the opposite. It says that most people are nice people, so most people will get to heaven. Everyone goes to heaven no matter what is what people say today, but what does Jesus say? Notice, He doesn't give a direct answer. He doesn't say, Only a few will be saved, as the Pharisees taught. Neither does Jesus say, "Many will be saved," as today's popular culture teaches. Instead, Jesus changes the focus from general statistics to the individual. He looks at his questioner and says, Strive to enter by the narrow gate. Then, Jesus reinforces this emphasis on individual responsibility, as opposed to general appearances, by showing that on Judgment Day there will be a lot of surprises. The first will be last, and the last will be first. What Jesus wants is clear. We cannot take our relationship with Christ for granted. We have to consciously and continually strive to enter by the narrow gate. This is what our Lord wants to tell us today. We need to ask ourselves, Is this the word that best characterizes our Christian life striving? Jesus is eagerly looking at us today, inviting us to break out of our comfort zones and start striving to follow him more closely. He only asks this of us because He loves us, and love always seeks the very best for the beloved and not what is it in for me? We each have to examine our hearts and see where we have been falling into routine, where in our Christian lives we have been getting lazy. Maybe you already know, but if not, here's a suggestion. We cannot strive with all our strength to follow Christ if we do not know Christ. This week, why not make the resolution to start striving to know Christ better? It can be done in many ways: weekly Eucharistic adoration, prayerfully reading the Bible word for word, renewing your prayer life with more quiet time with the Lord and less talking to the Lord, reading a good book on Christ, a saint or the Catholic Church. Whatever each of us decides to do, let's make sure we decide to do something, depending not on our own strength, but on God's grace. Jesus is eager to help us through the narrow gate, but are we willing to pick up our crosses and follow Him daily to Calvary? Jesus said, Not everyone that says to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the Kingdom of Heaven, but he that does the will of my Father who is in Heaven. I continue to thank all of you for your continued hospitality and warmth you are showing me and each other. Please spread the good word of our wonderful parish and it is very nice to see more and more people coming back to worship God. Many of us are saying how great it is to see our parishioner families returning back. St Louis de Montfort, pray for us! Our Lady, Undoer of Knots, pray for us! The teachers and students will proceed to church together for the 9:30 Mass. The Open House will be in the Religious Education Office for parents and students following the Mass. Saturday, September 17, 2016 Class: 9:00 am The first full day of class. The calendar for the R.E. program is being finalized and will be available on the Parish website. If your child is making a sacrament during the school year you need to provide a copy of the child s baptismal certificate along with their Registration form. THERE WILL BE NO REGISTRATIONS ACCEPTED AT THE OPEN HOUSE. THE MUSIC MINISTRY NEEDS YOU!! We are asking members of the community, high school age and older, to consider a short term choir commitment for the purpose of singing for Fr. Stan s Installation Mass which will take place at 11:30 on Sunday, October 9th. All former choir members and any new people are welcome. Your only requirement is to want to sing with a group to make this Liturgy as uplifting and special as possible for Fr. Stan and our Parish family. Rehearsals are tentatively scheduled to begin at the end of August. We are also still looking for volunteers for cantors and choir members for our weekly masses. FEAST OF OUR LADY OF CZESTOCHOWA Friday, August 26th is the feast day of Our Lady of Czestochowa. Join us in the Chapel on Saturday August 27th, from 9 10 AM. The hour of Eucharistic Adoration, which immediately follows the 8:30 AM Scripture Communion Service, will be devoted to honor this feast day. The adoration will begin with a special prayer to Our Lady of Czestochowa followed by the rosary. All are welcome to join us.
