1 St. Louis de Montfort Mother s Day May 14, 2017
2 Fr. Stan s Utterances Page 2 May and October are the months dedicated to the Blessed Mother of God. In our Catholic traditions, October is dedicated to praying the rosary, and the month of May is dedicated to praying the Litany of Loreto to Mary. I encourage everyone to please pray this prayer everyday throughout the month of May. On the Fifth Sunday of Easter, Our Lord reminds that that we are called to continue His work and to achieve even greater things than He accomplished during his earthly ministry. He built his Church with growth in mind, generation after generation, founded on Him and the Apostles. In today s First Reading the Twelve are faced with more work than they can handle, and people are starting to complain. The Twelve cannot take care of everyone. This is no surprise. Our Lord didn t just appoint one person to carry on His work; Jesus appointed Twelve, and, soon after, the Twelve needed helpers, and other apostles, like Paul and Barnabas, to continue the work in the face of the Church s explosive growth. The Twelve asked for candidates, but they were also clear that those who would help them in the ministry needed to be filled with the Spirit and wisdom. These men would become known as the Seven, and, according to tradition, are the first deacons in the Church. The Holy Spirit kept the apostles faithful to the work Christ wanted them to do, and the Spirit continues to do so for all of us. In today s Second Reading St. Peter reminds us that through Baptism we have been incorporated into the Church, and are now living stones in an edifice constructed with a spiritual and priestly purpose. Our Lord described Himself to the Pharisees and scribes as the stone rejected by the builders that would become the corner stone (see Matthew 21:42). They had rejected Him, but the Father builds the Church on Him, and He made the Apostles the foundation for His Church. The Lord continues to build the Church through us, on the solid foundations of those living stones who have preceded us and our own efforts at holiness. A living stone is not just edified, but edifying. We are inserted into this spiritual and social structure and helped to support it and to remain solid. If our works are edifying, it will attract even those who don t know Our Lord to see where that special something we have comes from and to seek it out as well. In today s Gospel Our Lord, at the Last Supper, prepares His disciples for the moment when he ll be separated from them on earth, and they ll be expected to carry on His mission. He reminds them that they have a place waiting for them in Heaven, just as they have a place in his Church. He tells them today that they know where He is going. When the moment was right, Our Lord returned and led every one of them to the Father s House, just as He will lead us one day. In the meanwhile, we have to stay the course He has taught us, and, if we get turned around, ask for directions to get back on track. Helping people get back on track to the Father s House is what we re all called to do as Christians, but to do that we must know how to get to the Father s House. Christ describes himself as the way : we show others the way to the degree that we imitate Him. Our Lord became flesh and put some believers on the right track, and those believers have helped Him guide us ever since. He sent apostles to the four corners of the world, and they still carry out their mission through us. This is the work He said would be even greater than his ministry on earth. It spread to the entire Roman Empire, then beyond its borders to the whole world. We re called to continue these greater works that he encouraged his first disciples to do. The key is having faith in God, believing in God and living our lives with God at the center of everything we do. This why on this Mother s Day, we thank God for the gift of life he has bestowed to all women to bring forth life and nurture this life. Our mothers have been the first disciples of Jesus to introduce us to Him and help us grow in our faith, through prayers and service, so that we carry on all of His commandments and teachings. Thank you mothers and grandmothers for your faith and love. Here is a special prayer we should all say for all of our mothers, living here on this earth or living in Heaven and still lovingly watching over us and praying for us: Prayer for All Mothers: O almighty and eternal God, Lord of both the living and the dead, Your tender mercy embraces all people foreknown to be Yours by faith and a good life. Through the intercession of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, our Mother, and of all the saints, grant Your merciful pardon to all mothers for whom we pray, whether they still are living in this world or have departed from this flesh into the world to come. Especially, dear Lord, grant the requests I now make of You for my own beloved mother. All-loving God, we give you thanks and praise for mothers young and old. We pray for young mothers, who give life and count toes and tend to our every need; may they be blessed with patience and tenderness to care for their families and themselves with great joy. We pray for our own mothers who have nurtured and cared for us; may they continue to guide us in strong and gentle ways. We remember mothers who are separated from their children because of war, poverty, or conflict; may they feel the loving embrace of our God who wipes every tear away. We pray for women who are not mothers but still love and shape us with motherly care and compassion. We remember mothers, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers who are no longer with us but who live forever in our memory and nourish us with their love. Amen. Happy Mother s Day! Happy Easter again! It is still the Easter Season. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Jesus lives!
3 Page 3 Please keep our 8th grade students in your thoughts and prayers. On May 11th, the students received their graduation ribbons and autograph books. This is a time for them to look back and remember their time at St. Louis de Montfort in elementary school before they begin their high school experience. Also, please pray for our 2nd grade students who, on Saturday, May 13th, received the final sacrament of initiation, Holy Eucharist. Thank you to Mrs. Dobrocky for preparing our school students so well for this important sacrament. We invite you to attend our Final Spring Concert, Sing to the Glory of God on Thursday, May 18th at 7:00 pm in church. The students have worked hard in their music classes to learn the songs. Our School Choir and Handbell Choir will also perform special songs. Recently, the entire student body enjoyed a field trip to the Field Museum of Natural History. They enjoyed Sue the Dinosaur, learned about life in ancient Egypt and wandered through an Egyptian pyramid. They also saw and touched meteors and they learned about the Lions of Tsavo. A fun day was enjoyed by all! Thanks to FSA for providing our buses! Litany of The Blessed Virgin Mary ~~ Litany of Loreto Lord, have mercy on us. Christ, have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy on us.
