2 Fr. Stan s Utterances Page 2 May and October are the months dedicated to the Blessed Mother of God. In our Catholic traditions, October is dedicated to praying the rosary, and the month of May is dedicated to praying the Litany of Loreto to Mary. I encourage everyone to please pray this prayer everyday throughout the month of May. Maybe you are already praying this prayer and know everything about it. Great, keep up the great work! Yet, there are many of us who never prayed it or just seldom pray it? So, why do we need to pray this prayer Fr. Stan? It has been a great Catholic Tradition since the Middle Ages that needs to come back again since many have forgotten to pray in general to the Blessed Mother in today s times. The Litany to Our Blessed Mother is a prayer that goes back into the early Middle Ages. The Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Marian litany originally approved in 1587 by Pope Sixtus V. It is also known as the Litany of Loreto, for its first-known place of origin, the Shrine of Our Lady of Loreto (Italy), where its usage was recorded as early as Our Lady of Loreto is the Virgin's title with respect to the Holy House of Loreto, contained within the Shrine of Our Lady of Loreto, in Loreto, Italy. A number of saints have considered it the holiest place on earth, since in the Holy House "the Word became Flesh." The House has been shown to be constructed of materials native to Nazareth and with dimensions which suit the site of the cave venerated in Nazareth as the home of Mary at the time of the Annunciation. Some of Our Lady's most well-known titles are preserved in the Litany of Loreto, which was approved by Pope Sixtus V in 1587, but could have originated as early as the end of the 12th Century. This collection of Marian titles is interesting in a number of ways. It enshrines both Old and New Testament imagery to form an expansive verbal tapestry, offering a panoramic view of the Blessed Mother's place in salvation history. So, Mary is invoked there not only as "Holy Mother of God" and "Mother of the Church," but also as "Seat of Wisdom," "Ark of the Covenant," and "Tower of David." The divisions between the Testaments" melt away in this Litany, and the plan of God for our Redemption seems to flow across the centuries uninterruptedly, with logic and thoroughness. The womb of the Mother of God, the first of all Tabernacles, is superimposed over its "type" (i.e., foreshadowing), the Ark of the Covenant, and all the proper connections come to light. Please take time to pray with Mary everyday using the Litany of Loreto. The Litany is provided in the bulletin for all of us to pray. There are no excuses now! Israel had long been a shepherding people. None of the eloquent details of the comparison would have been lost on Jesus' listeners. Most of us have seen the image of a shepherd carrying a little lamb around their shoulders. When a lamb is fearful or overconfident, it constantly wanders away from the shepherd, putting itself in danger. When that keeps happening, a shepherd will sometimes purposely break one of its legs. He then puts the lamb around his neck and carries it to and from pasture for the couple of weeks while the leg heals. By that time, the little lamb has become attached to the shepherd, and never again strays far from its master's protection and guidance. The image of the shepherd as the gate of the sheepfold is even more suggestive. A flock of sheep needs both protection and nourishment. The sheepfold provides the protection, and the fields provide the nourishment. In Palestine shepherds often sleep in the opening of the sheepfold, which is made out of a large circle of thick, high shrubbery. This way, wolves smell the shepherd's presence and fear to make midnight raids, while the sheep keep together inside, comforted by the presence of their protector and guide. When day finally dawns, the shepherd rises to lead his sheep out to pasture. Thus the opening, the gate, symbolizes both protection and nourishment. Therefore, when Christ calls himself the "gate for the sheep," Jesus is telling us what He wants to be for each of us: everything. We, as God s sheep, His flock, the problem is not the shepherd's limitations or ignorance, but the sheep's lack of docility: we stray from the flock and trap ourselves in thistles and swamps of self-centeredness, self-indulgence, and stubborn disobedience. As Christians, we actually don't have just a good shepherd, but the perfect shepherd. All we need is to be sensible sheep and listen to the voice of the One we know. Through Church teaching, God provides a thick hedge of truth protecting us from false, seductive doctrines. Through the sacraments, God provides rich pasture to strengthen our needy souls. Jesus alone, the Good Shepherd, gives the Church her wisdom and the sacraments their power. Happy Easter again! It is still the Easter Season. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Jesus lives!

4 Page 4 PICNIC PLANNING UPDATE!! Plans are well underway for our picnic on June 4th! FUTURE PLANNING MEETINGS ARE SCHEDULED FOR MAY 16th AN ALL VOLUNTEER MEETING IS PLANNED FOR MAY 30th We will be offering tours of the school, (actual time TBD) so it will be a great opportunity for any former students, parents and parishioners to walk the halls and reminisce with friends and family. There are activities planned for adults and children throughout the day. A bake sale is planned, get your favorite recipes out, no items that require refrigeration can be accepted. We are already receiving many donations from area businesses and parishioners to make our raffles enticing! The main component to making such an event a success is, as always, VOLUNTEERS. Please consider signing up on one of the sign up sheets in the vestibule or sign up sheets available in school. We are asking for shifts of 3 hours, all day or any amount of time you can offer. We must have a minimum of 35 volunteers. We are not asking that you volunteer the whole day (although you certainly are welcome to) but having sufficient people onboard to make the activities run smoothly is a must! Our goal is for everyone to have a chance to enjoy the day with their family, so please give a couple hours of your day to help out! School families, this is a final way to get your required volunteer hours counted! Another important component to our success is getting the word out and inviting neighbors, family and friends to share the day with us. The festivities will begin following the 11:30 mass. What better way to acknowledge the history and accomplishments of our school and parish than to begin in prayer. Fr. Stan has been asking each of us to bring a former parishioner back to St. Louis. Invite your neighbors, share with them what the St. Louis de Montfort community has to offer.
