2 Fr. Stan s Utterances Page 2 Today in the Gospel, Jesus confronts the devil three times. Why is it today that many people say the devil does not exist and he is not real? If he is real and tempted Jesus, then what makes us think the other way that so many people and our society believes there is no such thing as the devil. Adam s temptation by the devil was reversed in Jesus temptation. The devil goes out to tempt people, but in this case it was Jesus who went to confront Satan in the desert. The means that the devil used to overcome Adam were the same means he used on Jesus. The devil tempted Adam by gluttony, by vain ambition and by avarice/greed. Now, he tempts the second Adam the same way. The devil tempted Jesus by gluttony when he said, Tell these stones to become bread. The devil tempted Jesus by vain ambition when he said, If you are the Son of God, cast yourself down. The devil tempted Jesus by a greedy desire for high position when he showed Him all the kingdoms of the world, saying, I will give you all of these if you will fall down and worship me. However, the devil is overcome by Holy Scripture! Jesus always answered back by quoting the Old Testament in the following order as he quoted Satan the following verses from Deuteronomy 8:3, Psalm 91:11-12, Deuteronomy 6:16 and Deuteronomy 6:13. This is why it is so important for us to find our Bible again, open the Holy Scriptures and prayerfully read the Holy Scriptures to refute Satan in our own temptations in our own lives! If Jesus does it, we should all the more do it! Jesus threw Satan away by the living word of God in who now He assumed our human flesh speaking in the person of God Himself to Satan. Now, the St. Paul's Letter to the Romans is unique. His other Letters were written in response to specific struggles being faced by local Christian communities, but he had a different goal with his Letter to the Romans. He was hoping to begin soon a new series of missionary journeys that would bring him west, all the way to Spain in fact. For those journeys, he would need a base of operations, and Rome was the perfect choice. It was the capital of a vast empire. To conquer that world for Christ, there was no better headquarters. The Christians in Rome had heard of Paul, but had never met him. So, he sent this Letter to prepare the ground for his upcoming visit. He wanted the Romans to know his views firsthand, not through indirect sources. In the section we just heard, Paul elucidates the very core of the whole Gospel, summing up all of human history in a few sentences. God created the human family in perfect harmony, peace and prosperity. Unfortunately, Adam, the leader of that family, sinned. This original sin ruptured that harmony and created a world infected by sin and fraught with conflict, evil, and suffering. Jesus Christ was God's response. Helpless to help ourselves, we needed a savior, someone to reverse Adam's rebellion and reestablish a right relationship between God and man. Jesus Christ was and is that Savior. Adam disobeyed God when he ran into the devil in the Garden of Eden, and all of Adam's descendants suffered the painful consequences. Jesus obeyed God the Father when He ran into the devil in desert during His forty days, in the Garden of Gethsemane, during His scourging and crowning of thorns and on the cross at Calvary. Therefore, Jesus spiritual descendants receive from Him the restoration of righteousness - a right relationship with the Father. Here is an example of what we are to do with this first message of Lent. With great power comes great responsibility. When the Marvel Comics superhero Spiderman first gained his super powers, he decided to use them for himself by becoming a celebrity Spiderman learned from that one wrong decision what became his motto, with great power comes great responsibility. He decided to use his powers for the good of others, not just for himself. Therefore, let us give to God whatever He asks of us. Lent is a time when God wants us to think deeply about these important truths. Jesus has already redeemed us. He already died for us, rebuilding the bridge between mankind and God that Adam and Eve had shattered. However, we are still on our journey to and through the bridge. The same devil that tempted Adam in the Garden of Eden and Jesus in the desert is interested in leading us off the right path, so that we don't find and cross the bridge. Many times, because of weakness or just plain selfishness, we give into the devil's temptations. Sometimes we give in so frequently and so easily that we become enslaved to sinful habits. Lent is a time the Church gives us to make a fresh start. God led Israel out of slavery in Egypt and sustained them through their desert journey until they reached the Promised Land. The journey was hard, but God was faithful. Our journey to a more mature and fruitful following of Christ will be hard too, but God is still faithful. Today, when He comes to renew His commitment to us in Holy Communion, let's thank Him for coming to save us. St. Louis de Montfort, pray for us! Our Lady, Undoer of Knots, pray for us! Also, loving God, please hear our prayers as we gather as your children saddened by the loss of our school. We ask you to help us be a warm and caring community for each other as we anticipate the school s closing and celebrate its many accomplishments of your mission among us. Have a great week and enjoy life! Pray always!
3 Page 3 SCHOOL NEWS!! Recently, our students were treated to an assembly by Animals for Awareness - a not for profit animal rescue society. We learned reasons why the Amazonian parrot is considered endangered. We talked about diets of different animals and when they are most active during the day. We met a parrot, snake, tortoise, domestic skunk, Pygmy hedgehog, just to name a few. Some of the students had the opportunity to touch, or even hold, some of the animals. We would like to thank the Family School Association for arranging this! Our 4th and 5th grade students read biographies as part of their Reading class this month. Students then dressed as their person and wrote a list of 10 clues for the audience to use to guess their name. Students read about John F. Kennedy, Sacajawea, Jane Goodall, Isaac Newton and Rosa Parks among others. Thank you to Ms. Dunne and the 4th and 5th grade students for their presentations. This is the last week we are selling tickets for March Madness. Practice some alms giving and buy a few tickets!
