Bible story at 10 a.m. on the second floor of the church for all ages. The program is free. Registration opens for religious education classes that begin in September. Parents can register after weekend Masses this month or weekdays at the rectory. Annual Summer Dinner Dance in the Social Hall until 11:30 p.m. Religious education orientation for parents, teachers and students. First day of R.E. Classes 7 P.M. WEDNESD@YS Love Jesus in the Mass Arrive early. Observe silence. Pray while waiting for the Holy Mass to begin. Actively and reverently participate, Sing with the choir, Participate in the responses, Prayerfully listen to the Gospel proclamation, Attentively listen to the homily. Focus your attention on the entire celebration. Bear in mind that in each Holy Mass Jesus is present as in the Last Supper. Give generously. Sing/pray the Lord s Prayer reverently. Smile and sincerely say Peace be with you. Reverently and joyfully partake of the Body of Christ. After Communion, kneel and dialogue with Jesus. Don t leave after the dismissal; wait until the hymn Is finished. Share with your family or companion the learning and impact the readings, homily and Mass had on you. Be prepared: Read the readings beforehand.

3 Page 3 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Shake off the dust Father Peter Fernandes, sfx The gospel of Jesus Christ is a treasure and divine gift to humankind. In fact, the Bible is not any ordinary word, but the living word of God. The author of Hebrews writes, For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. The word God spoke from the beginning to create the universe, to guide the people through prophets, judges, and leaders of the people, finally took flesh in Jesus Christ, the eternal word of God. St. John writes, In the beginning was the word, the word was with God and the word was God and the word became flesh and dwelt among us. The disciples are sent to proclaim this word of God (Jesus Christ) to all of creation. It is a responsibility and privilege to bear the word of God and proclaim it with joy and devotion. Those who willingly submit to the word of God, Jesus vests with his authority and power. Hence, the disciples should take their responsibility seriously, to ensure that the message of Jesus is reflected in the messenger in their words and deeds. The psalmist advises, Gird your sword on your side, you mighty one; clothe yourself with splendor and majesty. (Ps 45/3) St. Paul summarizes the responsibility of the disciples, How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? Consequently, Jesus sounds a warning to his disciples and those who hear them: And if any place does not welcome you, and people refuse to listen to you, as you walk away, shake off the dust from under your feet as a sign to them. The word of God is supreme. Therefore, the messengers of the word of God cannot and should not waver because of worldly pressures. The prophet Amos was threatened by the people and elders not to prophesy in Bethel, because it was the royal sanctuary, the national temple. But Amos confronts the people saying it is not my message but of God. The Lord said to me, Go, prophesy to my people Israel. When the temple authorities ordered Peter and John not to speak in Jesus name, the apostles replied, We must obey God, rather than man. The secular world has waged a war against the word of God. Where are the prophets, apostles, and teachers and preachers of the word of God? Is the preaching of the word of God continuing with the same fervor shown by the prophet Amos and the apostles? Will Jesus say about us, Shake off the dust from under your feet as a sign to them? It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. (John 6/63). While summoning the twelve, Jesus instructed them about the precious gift they are bringing to the people. Therefore, they ought to be mindful of their responsibility. They are to rise above the mundane; that is, they are not be concerned about what to wear or what to eat, for everything will be provided. It is a tragedy and travesty of many preachers of the word of God in our time that they have shifted their focus from the word of God to material wellbeing, or rather are using the word of God to gain their own material wealth and power. How will people benefit from the word of God? It is imperative for the disciples to emulate the word of God and to be effective preachers of the word of God. Only then would Jesus say to us if people refuse to listen, Shake off the dust from under your feet as a sign to them.

Danielle RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS Congratulations to JoAnne Blaquera, who was recognized in June by the Archdiocese as a certified catechist. She completed 40 hours of faith formation in order to earn certification. She also teaches religious education during the school year. Are you called by God to serve our faith community as a catechist? We need a few more people to help with religious education. If you d like to learn more about our faith and share it with children and young people, contact Cindy Shaw in person or leave a message for her at the rectory by calling (773) RCIA classes will begin in September for adults and teens 16 years old or more who are interested in becoming Catholic or who have been baptized and want to receive the Catholic Church s other sacraments of initiation. For more information, talk with Father Peter or call the rectory. Do you remember the Old Testament story of Joseph and his brothers as told in Genesis? Join us at 10 a.m. on the second floor of the church next Sunday, July 19, to enjoy an animated version of the story. No need to bring your Bible, as several will be available for reference. The material is family-friendly and suitable for all ages. The program is free. Other Bible stories are scheduled to be shown on July 26, and Aug. 2, Aug. 13 and Aug. 30. All the showings are free.

A baptismal preparation class is required and is held every 1st Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in the rectory basement. Please call the rectory at least two months before the celebration to make the arrangements. Generally, Baptism is celebrated on Sundays at 12:00 p.m. SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE: Couples should contact a priest at least four months before the celebration. A program of marriage preparation is required. SACRAMENT OF THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK: Please contact the parish priest anytime. FUNERAL MASS: In case of death, call the rectory first to schedule a Funeral Mass. MINISTERS OF CARE can bring Holy Communion to the sick or homebound. Please call the rectory.
