2 Beloved in Christ, Most of you have probably heard by now that our parish is in the beginning stage of strategic planning. A couple of months ago, the Parish Council discussed undertaking such an effort in order for our parish to plan for the future. The Parish Council and I agreed to commence this effort because we believe it is important for our parish to reflect on how we might best carry out Christ s mission within the context of our local parish community. We hope to explore how we can continue to do the will of God as we work together as a parish family. The Parish Council and I have absolutely no agenda or pre-conceived notions about where this process will lead us. Our only agenda is to collectively discern the direction in which God leads us. We do not have any other pre-determined goals related to this strategic plan. To be sure, we will in no way change or compromise the Holy Orthodox faith, but will together discern how God is leading us to live out that very faith as a parish community. To this end, we have contacted a faithful Orthodox Christian, Bill Marianes, who is well known in the Orthodox world for helping parishes and other church organizations with strategic planning. We are blessed that Bill offered to provide his services to us free of charge including at least two trips he will make to Wichita to help us with this process over the next year. One of the most important aspects of Bill s process is that he provides several opportunities along the way for all parishioners to provide constructive feedback. In other words, by the time the strategic plan has been finalized, everyone associated with our parish will have had a chance to contribute to the process. We expect to be concluded with our strategic planning by May In order for the strategic plan to become a reality, Mr. Marianes advised us that several committees are necessary. The first of these committees, the Core Team, has been established. The Core Team consists of myself, Tracy Namee, Michael Zarich, Rick Husselman, Tana Salome, and Cliff Bragg. The first task of the Core Team was to establish a group of 25 additional parishioners to be part of the Strategic Planning Team. This group has also been finalized and will begin its initial work in June. In September 2016 and January 2017, the Strategic Planning Team will participate in weekend-long retreats with Mr. Marianes. Again, throughout this process, Mr. Marianes has built in opportunities to ensure all St Mary parishioners have a voice in arriving at our Strategic Plan. Although the Strategic Planning team will lead us through this process with Mr. Marianes, all parishioners will have a chance to be heard. As you hear about opportunities to participate over the next 12 months, I pray that you will assist us. Together we can continue to commend ourselves and each other and all our life unto Christ our God. Yours in Christ, Fr Aaron

6 A Peek Inside The Treehouse The Treehouse offers a variety of classes to our mothers to help them get on a successful parenting track and ultimately have a positive impact on their child and generations to come. Shirley Buchanan, a Family Nutrition Program Assistant with Kansas State Research and Extension, has been teaching both the Healthy Eating on a Budget and Cooking Matters classes at The Treehouse since Both classes are hands on and allow the moms to prepare food in class each week as well as learn proper cooking techniques, nutrition basics, and how to read food labels. The classes open up a whole new world to some of our moms who are used to cooking everything from a box or freezer meals. Each week, they cook one to two recipes in class and get to take home groceries for a dinner for a family of four. The recipes offer the moms many new healthy ingredients that they have never tried or were unfamiliar to them. The moms also get a guided tour of the grocery store where they learn how to shop on a budget, but while still purchasing healthy foods from all four major food groups. Once the moms complete the six week class, they get the option of taking home either a crockpot or an electric skillet and they also have the opportunity to shop in The Treehouse food pantry that is donated by American AgCredit. We also will be offering this class to our moms on Saturdays at the end of April at our Hilltop location. 7 Summer Salsas Summer spoils us with an abundance of fresh produce. Whether it be garden-grown or store bought, the bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables offered this time of year encourages us to use them in a variety of ways. One of my favorite summertime dishes is salsa. Here are two salsas to try this summer! Chunky Tomato Salsa ( Note: This is a diabetic-friendly recipe! 3-1/2 c. peeled chopped tomatoes (about 4 large) 2-1/4 t. salt 1 large green pepper, chopped 1 garlic clove, minced 1 medium onion, chopped ¾ t. ground cumin 1 serrano pepper, seeded and chopped 1-6 oz. can tomato paste 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and chopped ¼ c. white vinegar 1 T. sugar 2 T. lemon juice In a large saucepan, combine the first nine ingredients. Stir in the tomato paste, vinegar, and lemon juice. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 1 hour, stirring frequently. Cool to room temperature. Cover and refrigerate until chilled. Serve with corn chips. Yield: 4 cups/16 servings. Dietary Exchange: 1 vegetable. Mango Pineapple Salsa Recipe ( 1 c. chopped peeled mango 2 green onions, sliced 1 c. pineapple tidbits 2 T. lime juice ½ c. diced red pepper 1 T. lemon juice 1 plum tomato, seeded and chopped 1 jalapeno pepper (finely chopped) 3 T. minced fresh cilantro Tortilla chips In a large bowl, combine the first nine ingredients. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour until chilled. Serve with tortilla chips. Yield: 2-2/3 c. This salsa can also be served with grilled chicken or fish. Cooking Tip: Wear disposable gloves when cutting hot peppers; the oil can burn skin. Avoid touching your face, and especially your eyes.

9 THE BELLES From the Ministry Teams The Belles of St. Mary have donated funds for part of the parish landscaping project on the south side of our property. We also donated funds for a challenge from the Humanitarian Ministry Team toward the purchase of motorcycles for Orthodox priests in Africa who will use them to reach mission sites. These donations are possible because the Belles of St. Mary Bizarre each fall. We hope you will remember these contributions and attend and support the Bizarre on October 15, At the beginning of each of the monthly Belles' meetings, we have been learning about women saints in the Orthodox faith. We have learned about most of the patron saints for our members and will continue to learn about more recent women saints in our faith. On May 23, all women in the parish were invited to attend Ladies' Night Out at Jimmy's Diner West at 21 st Street North and Tyler Road. The Lord's Diner exists to combat hunger in the community. The Diner's singular mission is to serve a nutritious meal with dignity and respect to anyone who is hungry. The Lord s Diner serves an evening meal 365 days a year. The Lord s Diner serves an average of 2,500 meals nightly at two dining facilities (one in downtown Wichita, and one in south Wichita) and two food trucks (one in northwest Wichita, and one in southeast Wichita), to any guest who needs a nutritious meal, 60 percent of which are families. St. Mary volunteers serve at The Lord s Diner the 3 rd Tuesday of each month. We gather at the downtown location, Central and Broadway, at 5:15 pm. We are usually finished by 8:00. A food handler s card is required. Food handler classes will be held Saturday, September 10, at Church of the Resurrection and Saturday, November 12, at Riverwalk Church of Christ. 12 What is your most memorable summertime experience? Marie Patterson: My most memorable summertime experience is traveling with my children. We were lucky that we had six weeks off each summer and could travel - to see grandparents, as well as take trips to the Southwest, and the Summer of Dinosaurs when we visited museums in Nebraska, Colorado, and South Dakota to learn about dinosaurs. The girls especially enjoyed the Mammoth Site in Hot Springs, South Dakota where they could sit with archeologists and watch them work. Nick Steinbrink: Growing up, one of the things my dad and I really bonded over was baseball. In the summer of 1999, when I was 12 years old, my dad and I took a road trip to Cooperstown, New York for the MLB Hall of Fame induction ceremonies. Between Omaha, Nebraska and Cooperstown, New York (about a 1,250 mile trip one-way), we made a couple stops along the way to catch some MLB games, including a visit to Jacobs Field (now Progressive Field) in Cleveland, as well as Old Yankee Stadium in NYC. However, the highlight of the trip was seeing George Brett and Nolan Ryan, two of my all-time favorite players, inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame. While in Cooperstown, I also had the opportunity to meet a lot of baseball's Hall of Famers like Whitey Ford, Yogi Berra, Lou Brock, Rollie Fingers, and Bob Gibson, just to name a few! Getting the opportunity to experience it all with my dad, who was the one who taught me to love the game, was just incredible. I'll never forget that trip, and maybe someday (God-willing), I'll be able to provide my own son with an experience like it. Rachel Zarich: My most memorable and best summer experience would probably have to be having the opportunity to be a counselor and ropes course facilitator at the Antiochian Village in the summer of 2011! I grew spiritually, learned a lot about myself and developed long lasting friendships. A really close second would definitely be going to project Mexico in 2012! Robbie Namee: Growing up, we always took a vacation, traveling by car or airplane. Those trips created wonderful memories. A couple that stand out: a trip to Branson, Missouri, with my cousins; a family reunion trip to Washington, D.C., and seeing all the sights. Anytime we are together, it is good! Steven Shippy: My most memorable summertime experience was a Project Mexico trip in I had just graduated high school and it was my first time being outside of the U.S. and my first time seeing extreme poverty. I got to go on the trip with my sister Melissa and some of my best friends, and I even celebrated my 19th birthday at the orphanage. The kids smashed my face in a cake! That trip inspired several other mission trips around the globe and the eventual development of Leadership Academy at St. Mary. I even got to go back with my parents several years later, which was really special. Sometimes I can't believe I actually helped build a house for a family. As far as I know it's still standing! Bill Almy: About 20 years ago, one of the most memorable experiences of my life came my way during the summer (I think!). While visiting friends in California, the Orthodox faith was put right in front of me! Within 30 minutes of arriving at their home, I was hearing Great Vespers for the first time. Our discussion afterwards, at their home, was lively, to say the least, and even though virtually every question I raised in protest was answered and then some, I couldn't be deterred from attending Liturgy the next morning. My friends found me a cheap copy of the music from the Liturgy on a cassette tape and I went on my way, rejoicing, but overwhelmed. THAT was a summer memory to put at the top of my list! Deanna Ferris: Lots of great summer memories, from Girl Scout camp, to playing softball, to Twin Rivers swimming all day. I especially loved our family vacations to Colorado, the beautiful mountains and crisp cool air. Mom would always make us a lunch to have a picnic by a stream and go creeking with us. Driving through the mountains was always an adventure with dad at the wheel. As a car load of kids and mom would ooh and awee as we looked around at the scenery, pointing left and right, high up on the ridge, where we could go over the edge at any time, dad would turn to look at what we were seeing and many screams would follow as the car swerved and he scared us half to death!

14 ANTIOCHIAN WOMEN PROJECT : HUNGRY CHILDREN AT HOME AND ABROAD This year, the Antiochian Women are tasked with raising money to feed hungry children in our country and elsewhere in the world. At the 52 nd Archdiocesan Convention in Boston, His Eminence Metropolitan Joseph announced the Antiochian Women s Project for this year: HUNGRY CHILDREN at Home & Abroad. This project will leverage the hard work and determination of our Antiochian Women to address one of the most pressing global tragedies, one which is exacerbated by war and poverty, and which is felt most acutely by children. His Eminence recognizes the fact that millions of children go hungry each day as a result of poverty, war, and displacement. The future stability of societies is directly affected when the growth of bodies and minds of children are stunted and weakened by malnutrition. In 2013, in America alone, 1.58 million children lived in food-insecure households (FeedAmerica.org); and globally 66 million primary school children attend classes hungry (worldhunger.org).
