The article below by Giacomo Sanfilippo appeared on the website Orthodoxy in Dialogue. It provides a good summation of the passage of Scripture we read from St Paul s Epistle to the Ephesians at each wedding service in the Orthodox Church. It has been slightly edited by Fr Aaron. Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives, be subject to your husbands, as to the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the Church. Children, obey your parents in the Lord. Slaves, be obedient to your earthly masters as to Christ. Masters, do the same to [your slaves]. (Eph 5:21-6:9) Thus the Holy Apostle Paul lays out a blueprint for harmonious relations in the 1st-century Christian household. What immediately becomes clear is that he exhorts each family member either to behave like Christ or to treat the others as if they themselves were Christ. Each member approaches the others in a self-sacrificial mode of relationship characterized by reciprocal servanthood. When considered carefully, spiritually, prayerfully, this passage part of which is read during the Orthodox rite of marriage allows no selfaggrandizement of the husband, no infantilization of the wife. This becomes clearer if we retain the structure of the original Greek in the opening verse: being subject to one another out of reverence for Christ; wives, to your husbands, as to the Lord. Paul addresses the exhortation to be subject, or to submit, to the husband and the wife equally, even as he articulates a vision for how this might work in actual practice to reflect and reveal the mutual love of Christ the Bridegroom and His Bride the Church. The nature of the mutual submission of husband and wife becomes clearer still when we consider the Greek ὑποτάσσω (hypotasso). This verb has the literal meaning of to place oneself under or to arrange oneself under another. This implies a freewill act of the one who submits, not a coercive act of the one to whom submission is rendered. This reciprocal movement of love no more infantilizes the wife than the husband; it coerces the wife no more than the husband. If we trust Paul when he asserts that the profound mystery of marriage reflects the nuptial union of Christ and the Church, we do well to recall that the incarnation of God and the deification of man exalts the Church to a place of equality with Christ, seated with Him and in Him at the right hand of the Father. Everything that pertains to the God-man by nature now pertains to us by grace. Significantly, we find a different verb altogether when we move to the obedience of the children and the slaves: ὑπακούω (hypakouo), cognate with to listen and used in the sense of obeying commands. The Gospels employ this word when sea, winds, and spirits obey Christ. In summary, the language of the passage cited at the beginning of this article envisions the wife on the level of her husband, not that of their children and slaves. I conclude with a passage from a previous work of mine: The good wine of grace upon grace transfigures all of human life even marriage into the radiant image and likeness of divine life. Divine grace collaborates with diligent human effort to transform the old wine of natural marriage into the new wine of marriage worthy of the Kingdom of God, a new marital paradigm in which the Christian husband assumes the role of Him who came not to be served, but to serve; and the Christian wife offers her submission not under compulsion, but as a free-will act of love because she sees her husband dying every day for her and her children on the cross of his crucified ego. Divine grace does not emasculate men; quite the contrary, it redeems and transfigures their fallen, sinful, belligerent masculinity according to the likeness of the deified masculinity of the incarnate Son of God.

Churching of James and Julia Lessman on July 22. Parents are Alex and Jessica Lessman. Congratulations and Many Years! On July 29, Nathan and Maren Kingery were married at St. Mary. Parents are Ken and Claire Dannenberg. Congratulations and Many Years!

Project Mexico group from St. Mary were Mike and Leah Zarich and Joey and Sophia Salome. Way to Go! Fr. Aaron with his new blue robes donated by Shirley Ellis in memory of her daughter, Diana. May Her Memory Be Eternal! Removal of wedding crowns, Nathan and Maren Kingery. Congrats and Many Years!

The Antiochian Women collected $116, for their project this year. Thanks you for your support! Zared Salome went into CrossRoad with the expectation that they would just be reading bible verses and studying the Bible strictly but he was very wrong. They did learn about the Bible but it wasn t just about the Bible. In theology clas they learned about the lineage of Jesus focusing mainly on Abraham, Moses, David then Jesus. In scripture class, they learned about what the professor called the divine swerve. He explained it as we humans see things in linear patterns because we are creature bound by time but God is not bound by time; He is outside of time. And so what we think are unconnected events actually are connected in Gods eyes. The staff members also gave talks on vocations and God, sorrow, and many other topics. Zared also participated in a lot of fun activities from a boat tour around downtown Chicago to having breakfast with some of the homeless on the Magnificent Mile. He highly recommends anyone who is interested in learning about our faith in going to CrossRoad. Julia Judy Pauline Lockwood passed to eternal life on Tuesday, July 31 in Kansas City, KS, after a long struggle with breast cancer. She was a member of the Wolf Family long time members of St. Mary parish until she moved to Kansas City and married Dr. Gary Lockwood. She is the sister of Mary Ann Khoury, Jad Wolf, Joseph Wolf, and Kouri Wolf. May Her Memory Be Eternal!

From the Ministry Teams THE SCROLL Next Issue Will Cover ~ September/October Deadline to Submit News ~ October 13 On Website ~ October 26 Available in Foyer ~ October 28 Send news to: rokallail@att.net PARISH COUNCIL You don t want to blink around St. Mary these days, or you will miss all kinds of things happening to the property. The parking lots are now available for full use, although there are a few more things that need to be done for full completion. You might notice some extra cars in the southeast corner of the parking lot behind the church. The West Wichita Optometrists staff was in need of places to park other than in their small lot, so we have entered into an agreement with them to allow them to park in our lot during work hours. The dome was moved to make roof repairs and to seal around the dome to prevent leakage. Plans are being made for some new flooring, and improvements are continuing to be made to the kitchen. Thank you to all of the ministry teams and parishioners who are working so hard on these projects. We are aware that there have been issues with the phone system, so we are looking into replacing the system. A safety response team is being formed to assist parishioners if the need arises. Team members will be trained so that they will be prepared to facilitate a safe and effective response to any emergency. We are looking forward to BISHOP Basil s annual visit during our feast weekend on September 9th. We are also gearing up for our annual meeting in November. We hope you will join us for both of these special events. MEAL TRAIN The St Mary Meal Train ministry was formed in 2016 to serve the families in our parish immediately following the birth of a child. After the birth of a child, what to eat for dinner is not usually at the forefront of new parents' minds. Instead, new parents are focused on the new life they have created and finding their new normal between dirty diapers, seemingly near-constant cries and many feedings. Our goal is to provide the evening meal every day for a week. The meals have been a mixture of home cooked, frozen, and store-bought meals as well as restaurant gift cards. We also provide a supply of paper products such as plates, napkins, cutlery, and cups to help reduce the work load of the family. Being part of this ministry does not mean that you have to be involved every time a request is sent out. Each of us has our own commitments and are sometimes unable to help. Any help at all is much appreciated by the families we are serving. If you would like to be part of this ministry, please contact Mary Shippy at murrybeth@hotmail.com to get on the mailing list. The Lord's Diner exists to combat hunger in the community. The Diner's singular mission is to serve a nutritious meal with dignity and respect to anyone who is hungry. The Lord s Diner serves an evening meal 365 days a year. The Lord s Diner serves an average of 2,500 meals nightly at two dining facilities (one in downtown Wichita, and one in south Wichita) and two food trucks (one in northwest Wichita, and one in southeast Wichita), to any guest who needs a nutritious meal, 60 percent of which are families. St. Mary volunteers serve at The Lord s Diner the 3rd Tuesday of each month. We gather at the downtown location, Central and Broadway, at 5:15. We are usually finished by 8:00. If you decide to be a regular volunteer, a Food Handler s Card is required. The City of Wichita offers classes on the 1st and 3rd Mondays and Saturdays of each month. Online classes are also available for a small fee. Call or go to Wichita.gov for more information and registration. Please note, you are allowed to serve a few times before the food handler s card is required. If you have not volunteered before, come join us. All volunteer sign up is now taking place on SIGN UP GENIUS. For more information contact Vicki Jones at or vawj55@gmail.com.

TEEN SOYO From the Ministry Teams The St. Mary Teen SOYO has had a busy few months. We started the summer with a swim party at the home of Tracy and Eric Namee. Later that same week, we traveled to Santa Fe, NM for the Parish Life Conference. Nine teens from St. Mary attended the PLC, which tied St. George Wichita for the most teens in attendance from a parish. Our parish can be proud of our teens, who represented St. Mary Wichita so well. They attended morning Matins and evening Vespers each day. They participated in the Teen Meeting. the Bible Bowl, and three of our teens won 1 st place in the Creative Arts Festival. They enjoyed all of the Teen functions and topped it all off by winning Most Improved Teen SOYO on the final night. It was a really wonderful and blessed time together. On August 4 th, we had our last gathering together before our 3 high school graduates head off on their next adventures, be it college or jobs. Teens gathered for Vespers and then headed to the Hinkle Law firm for a movie night. Fun and fellowship was enjoyed by all, though we were all sad to know it was our last time together before our graduates go on to other things. The Teens have several things coming up in the Fall. There will be a retreat in September, the annual DOWAMA SOYO Basketball Tournament in Oklahoma City in October, as well as other activities that the teens are planning. We would like to thank the Belles of St. Mary and the Parish Council for their financial support. The Belles provided the funds for us to have a wonderful meal together in Santa Fe. The Parish Council continues to help us by providing funding for our DOWAMA dues, as well as other activities that we enjoy together. A special thanks to our entire parish family for always supporting our fundraisers and for your continued love and prayers. Teens at Parish Life Conference Teens at Movie Night

From the Ministry Teams THE BELLES The Belles are preparing for our Annual Bazaar on September 22 nd from 9am to 3pm. If you would like to help, please see any of the Belles for questions. We will need help on Friday September 21 as well as day of the Bazaar. Please remember that the money we raise goes back to the church and those in need. Our next meeting will be Monday September 10, 6:30 pm at the Church. All women of the parish are welcome to join us. SUNDAY SCHOOL Sunday School will begin on our feast day September 9 at 9:00 a.m. We are looking forward to a wonderful new year. This years classes will serve ages 3 through 12th grade. If you have any questions, please ask Justine Nightingale, the director of Sunday School. ST. MARY Summer was busy with people traveling and not much was planned. We did plan lunch at The Stearman Bar and Grill in Benton after Divine Liturgy on Sunday, July 8. We had a good number of reservations until that weekend. Several people had to cancel for various reasons but all expressed their interest in doing this at a later date. There was also some interest in taking the Stearman Flight Tour. Those who were at church on Sunday decided to go ahead and go out for lunch with a few people who were going to the Marriott for the Sunday Brunch. It was a very good group and all enjoyed being together. The Stearman event will be rescheduled for October. This month s event is YAH Bingo at St. George. Always popular with our fellowship, this will be on Tuesday, August 21 at 11:30 1:00. The lunch will be catered by Ilham Saad and there is no charge for the event. Anyone who is interested in learning more about St. Mary on the Go Fellowship or joining us for activities, please contact Mary Ann Khoury at or maktoob@cox.net. THE HUMANITARIAN TEAM Helen Stitt worked the Filling the Gap location in the Oaklawn Elementary District. This experience makes a person understand the magnitude of child hunger in our country. Thank you to everyone who helped support the collection the Humanitarian Ministry Team had for this very important program. Our next big project will be the Christmas collection. We are looking for new projects through FOCUS North America, the Fellowship of Orthodox Christians United to Serve, which helps the poor and suffering in North America. One of the major national programs of FOCUS is the Christmas Program, which provides for those in need in a local community. Please watch the bulletin for updates on this project.

There is a wealth of brochure literature in St. Mary foyer for you to take and read. We are always in need of divine drink. Without this supply of Life from the divine Source, we go thirsty.

What spiritual practices have you found that help draw you closer to God? Kelly Hewitt: Personally, I find doing evening and morning prayers keep me feeling God s presence but reading the scripture especially the psalms gives me a better awareness and understanding of how my relationship with God should be and my shortcomings in that direction. Amy Minks: Lighting a prayer candle before going into church and kneeling during the service to pray. Debbie Nassif: Talking to Him several times a day. I am not kidding. I do this daily. Deacon James Kallail: An active life of worship that includes Great Vespers, Matins, and Divine Liturgy. Helen Stitt: I go into my office first thing after waking up and pray. Then read a daily passage from Reflections with Morning Coffee by Sister Vassa Larin. Christopher Wells: Reading the writings of the Fathers. Mike Zarich: Without a doubt becoming a chanter has been the best spiritual practice for me. It has helped me learn and understand (better) the many services the church offers us. Participating in the service makes me feel closer to God, because I am (usually) more focused on the service itself when I am chanting. Chanting is very spiritually fulfilling. More people should try it. Dennis Fairbanks: I have learned to focus on and repeat the Jesus Prayer or a Bible verse during times of anger or stress. My mom would make me count to 10. God asks for more. He wants me to keep reciting his words or instructions until the need has passed. Marie Patterson: When I drive by myself, I talk out loud to God. Speaking aloud helps me keep my thoughts focused and I find I am more honest in my prayers. Dottie Voth: First thing in the morning saying prayers and thankful that God has answered them. By attending church and participating in liturgy and especially receiving Holy Communion. Tana Salome: The spiritual practices that help to draw me closer to God as well as stay focused is to incorporate listening to a couple of pod casts daily. The path to listen to the daily Bible readings and commentary; Saint of the day; and one of my favorites The Morning Offering with Abbot Tryphon. Abbot Tryphon provides commentary on Orthodox Living who brings wisdom to many current cultural and social issues from the Orthodox view. Danny Namee: The Jesus Prayer. Robbie Namee: Just saying my prayers daily. Steven Shippy: Praying before meals has been a simple but important way for me to draw near to God throughout my day. Life can get so busy, and in the rush of morning I often forget my morning prayers and in the tiredness of evening I often forget my evening prayers. I even wear my prayer rope every day and I still forget. When there s food in front of me I rarely forget to pray. Even if I forget my other prayers I still have at least three opportunities each day to give thanks, pray for my family and friends, remember the poor, and focus on God instead of myself.

Tailgating Recipes After spending years in Nebraska, I came to realize there were actually five seasons: Winter; Spring; Summer; Fall; and Football! With Football Season upon us, many people will be gathering for tailgating and watch parties. Whether you watch the game in person or at home surrounded by friends and family, here are some recipes to enjoy! --- Megan Patterson Ground Beef Taco Dip 1 lb. lean ground beef (90% or higher) 2 c. shredded iceberg lettuce ¾ c. water 1 c. shredded cheddar cheese 2 envelopes taco seasoning, divided 2 medium tomatoes, finely chopped (16 oz) fat-free sour cream 1 medium green pepper, finely chopped 1 (8 oz) cream cheese, softened 1 (2-1/4 oz) sliced black olives, drained In a large skillet, cook and crumble beef over medium heat until no longer pink, 4-6 minutes; drain well. Add water and one envelope of taco seasoning; cook until thickened. Cool slightly. Beat sour cream, cream cheese, and remaining taco seasoning until blended. Spread in 3-quart dish; add ground beef. Top with lettuce, cheddar, tomatoes, green pepper, and olives. Barbeque Party Chicken 2 garlic cloves, minced 1Tbs. prepared mustard 2 tsp. butter 1 Tbs. celery seed 1 c. ketchup ½ tsp. salt ¼ c. chili sauce 2 dashes hot pepper sauce 2 Tbs. Worcestershire sauce 2 (4lb) broiler chicken, cut up In a large saucepan, saute garlic in butter until tender. Add all other ingredients except chicken. Bring boil, stirring constantly. Remove from the heat; set aside. On a lightly greased grill rack, grill chicken, covered, over medium heat for 30 minutes, turning occasionally. Baste with sauce. Grill 15 minutes longer, or until a thermometer reaches 170 degrees, basting and turning several times. Recipe Tips: This sauce is best when made a day or two in advance, giving the flavors time to come together. If you don t have chili sauce on hand, you can use ¼ cup extra ketchup or ¼ c. cocktail sauce. If you don t have a basting brush, tie a few sprigs of rosemary or another hearty herb together with twine, then baste with it.
