Young People Today: Understanding Youth Culture by Fr. Mark Leondis Submitted by Fr. Aaron Youth living in today s American culture are like no other young people in history. While we were all once their age, we never experienced the kinds of difficulties and pressures that they experience in contemporary society. To name a few of these difficulties, our young people face violence and shootings in schools, easy access to narcotics, and graphic sexual images on billboards, magazine covers, and internet sites. This is truly a complicated and challenging time for young people to develop and grow into healthy Christians. To gain a better understanding of how our youth are being raised, we must examine the societal realities that affect them. More than ever before, there is tremendous pressure placed on our children. Many of our children grow up in single parent homes; many begin working when they reach their teen years. They must make difficult moral choices and experience more societal pressures than we ever imagined. Looking at the larger picture, we see that our children are in a position to choose from many varying ideologies and subcultures. In some cases, they seem to be creating their own sub-cultures, seeking to break away and destroy the dominant mainstream culture. When looking into and trying to understand the various cultures of youth, we must look at the youth themselves: their talk, their dress, their magazines, their music, and their actions. Youth culture is a living phenomenon that is constantly changing. At a time in their lives when young people need stability, continuity, and structure, youth culture rarely remains consistent. The sad reality is that much of today s youth culture is not designed by young people themselves, but by marketing professionals looking to create a new trend, fashion, or fad for the sake of profit. They perceive our children as customers, not as a people. Our youth today are the most targeted group of teens and young adults in the history of commerce. However, these young people are not aware that they are the target of Madison Avenue s best marketing efforts. In a day and age when young people are experiencing overwhelming feelings of loneliness and are searching for acceptance, the Orthodox Church must become a major force in their lives. The Church must offer today s young people a better way, a change from the norm. The Church must offer today s young people a better choice, Jesus Christ. Today, a young boy would go so far as to make a kill for acceptance into a gang; the Church can offer acceptance in the person of Jesus Christ who went to the Cross and endured pain and humiliation for our salvation. In a suburban high school, boys etched marks in their belt tallying points for how many times they had sexual contact with a girl; the Church can offer dignity and self-respect in purity. A young girl contemplates suicide because she is not pleased with her physical appearance; the Church can offer her the beauty and sanctity of human life through the knowledge of being created in God s image and likeness. Young people are being challenged in their everyday lives by the media, peers, and school. They are challenged to go beyond their own personal and familial boundaries. They need to be grounded and committed to their faith in order to be better equipped to respond to difficult decisions. Modern technology and advancement have given us invaluable tools for communication: cell phones, pagers, computers, e- mail, instant messaging, and text messaging, all for the purpose of improving our communication. Often, parents are quick to supply their children with these communication tools of our modern age, but in reality, the average parent spends less than fifteen minutes a day speaking one-on-one with his or her child.

continued While our young people are constantly challenged in their everyday lives, how often do we as Orthodox leaders challenge them in their faith? How often do we charge them to be defenders of the Faith? How much do we expect from the young people of our parishes? Our Lord chooses each of us to do His will; to follow the way, the truth and the life ; to go and bear fruit. Yes, even teenagers! God does not hesitate to challenge all people to live a life in Him. We read in the Gospel of Luke the story of the Annunciation (Luke 1:26 38). Our Lord sent the Archangel Gabriel to invite and challenge Mary to become the God-bearer, the Theotokos. The most profound request in human history was made of a teenager, to bring salvation to the world. She was chosen by God, and she accepted his invitation. It is clear that young people are capable of tremendous accomplishments, if given the opportunity. Too often we relegate young people to the partial participation of parish life and do not allow them to fully develop to their potential in the faith. Too often we think the role a young person plays in the life of the parish is secondary. While as a Church we consider them full members of the body of Christ by virtue of their baptism and chrismation, we often times do not treat them as such. We need to stop asking our young people what we can do for them and begin asking and inviting them to offer their God-given talents and gifts for the glory of God. Rather than just talking about the issues they are facing daily sexual purity, substance abuse, violence and the pressures of their culture allow them to experience their faith and thus find their answers within the context of the faith community, the body of Christ. Challenge them to make the Orthodox faith primary in their lives; it is easy to be a Christian on Sunday morning, but what about the rest of the week? Encourage them to fully participate in the sacramental life of the Church. Invite them to chant in the choir for the divine services; not just to be passive bystanders. Support them to become active members and leaders. Because today s young people are dealing with the stress, pressures, and realities that no other generation has had to address, their faith must become a living reality in their lives. They will rise to the occasion; they will acknowledge our Lord s invitation; they will accept His challenge and become more successful than imaginable. Remember, young people are capable of tremendous feats, if given the opportunity. Every human being, young and old, is called by our Lord to accept His challenge. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide in my name, he may give it to you. From this website:

Q u e s t i o n o f t h e M o n t h Summer has arrived! The days are longer, warmer (or just plain hot), lawn mowers can be heard throughout the neighborhood! I asked several parishioners during a recent coffee hour What do you like most about summer? Shirley Zarich: Warm weather and my grandchildren home more often. Marie Patterson: Fresh fruits and vegetables. Opportunity to see family. I was raised in the Black Hills in South Dakota and most of our relatives lived in eastern South Dakota. We were every relatives favorite vacation destination so we got to spend time with all of our aunts, uncles, and cousins. I learned recently that many of my cousins didn't know each other, but they all knew my sisters and me. Joan Aboud: The heat it's easier to get around and it's green outside. Judith Shippy: The heat! Paula Zarich: I get to see my girls more. Laura Oller: Lack of a school schedule. Freedom to sleep in and go and do things. Emma Pike: Swimming. We went to the pool in our neighborhood yesterday. Lillie Nightengale: More time to do crafting. Kirby Jantz: The heat as long as it doesn't get too hot. I like the long day light hours. Ruth Wallace: Air conditioning. I don't like the heat. Helen Stitt: Being able to go out on our pontoon and spending more time with our children and grandchildren. Ellie Jacobs: Warm weather. Emmelia Warwick: No school. More time to swim and hang out with friends.

From the Ministry Teams THE SCROLL Next Issue Will Cover ~ July/August Deadline to Submit News ~ August 13 On Website ~ August 25 Available in Foyer ~ August 27 Send news to: thescrollnews@yahoo.com or rokallail@att.net ST. MARY ON THE GO Our group enjoyed BINGO and lunch with St. George YAH on April 25. Several attended and won prizes from their BINGO cards. We plan to attend this whenever it is scheduled during the year. We attended the Lunch and Lecture series at Botanica on June 14 and had a planning meeting in the atrium that day. This was an opportunity for those who attended to spend some time in the gardens as well as casually discuss any upcoming activities that we may want to schedule throughout the rest of the year. The lunch was catered that day by Sweet Basil and the lecture was on fruit trees for your garden. We always look forward to increasing our participants and hope more will join us at their leisure in the months ahead. We will be planning some very interesting activities. For more information on this ministry team or for recommended activities, please contact Mary Ann Khoury at or maktoob@cox.net THE BELLES The Belles met in May for our annual dinner at Mediterranean Grill we had about 20 in attendance and enjoyed great fellowship. We are now preparing for our annual Bazaar Saturday October 14, from 9am to 3pm. If you are interested in helping that day please see any Belle. If anyone would like to be on the Belles list please notify Robbie Namee at rnamee@cox.net. THE HUMANITARIAN TEAM The Humanitarian Ministry Team will be sponsoring its annual collection drive for Franklin Elementary. Please watch the bulletin for details.

From the Ministry Teams The Lord's Diner exists to combat hunger in the community. The Diner's singular mission is to serve a nutritious meal with dignity and respect to anyone who is hungry. The Lord s Diner serves an evening meal 365 days a year. The Lord s Diner is currently serving an average of 2,500 meals nightly at two dining facilities (one in downtown Wichita, and one in south Wichita) and two food trucks (one in northwest Wichita, and one in southeast Wichita), to any guest who needs a nutritious meal - 60 percent of which are families. St. Mary volunteers serve at The Lord s Diner the 3 rd Tuesday of each month. We gather at the downtown location, Central and Broadway, at 5:15. We are usually finished by 8:00. If you decide to be a regular volunteer, a Food Handler s Card is required. The City of Wichita offers classes on the 1 st and 3rd Mondays and Saturdays of each month. Online classes are also available for a small fee. Call or go to Wichita.gov for more information and registration. Please note, you are allowed to serve a few times before the food handler s card is required. If you haven t volunteered before, come join us. For more information contact Vicki Jones at or vawj55@gmail.com. Thanks to our volunteers Ken Dannenberg, Karen Diltz, Cathy and Dennis Fairbanks, Deanna Ferris, Connie Hansen, Rick Husselman, Mark and Vicki Jones, Joey, Tana, Sophia, and Zared Salome, Jocelyne Van Meter, Christopher Wells, Mike Zarich, and Rachel Zarich. ST. MARY TEENS The St. Mary Teens have been very active over the past few months. Several fundraisers were held to help the teens raise money to travel to the Parish Life Conference in Houston. We are so grateful to everyone who supported us and made it possible for us to take a group to Houston. Four teens and our advisor were able to fly to Houston and attend the PLC, thanks to the support of our parish. We have also helped with child care during the Strategic Planning Roll Out Event and worked throughout the day at our Mediterranean Festival. It hasn t all been work for us. We had an end of the school year swim party at the Namee s house. We finished off the evening by having a mock Bible Bowl to help our team prepare for the PLC. We were excited to send the first Bible Bowl team in five years from St. Mary to the PLC. Zared Salome, Owen Walters, Sophie Jacobs and Sophia Salome represented us very well and, while we didn t bring home the trophy, our teens did an incredible job, taking 5 th place overall. Rachel Zarich traveled with and supervised our teens. We were missing some who could not go to Houston due to summer school and work obligations, but that didn t stop those who couldn t attend from helping raise funds for those who could. We are super proud of our teens!

In the Project poster, the lights of the cities and towns across North America represent the thousands of faithful men, women, and youth of our Archdiocese showing forth the Light of Christ through their selfless ministries within the Church and to the world around us. The funds we raise this year will go to strengthen the following ministries in our Archdiocese: planning senior housing projects; founding missions; supporting seminarians; encouraging youth ministries; protecting the unborn; teaching the Faith; caring for the elderly and those in prisons, nursing homes and hospitals; helping to feed, house, and clothe the poor; and inspiring monastic vocations. As the quote from Isaiah assures us, it is God s strength which will enable us to make firm the foundation of His Church (Eph 2:19-20). His Eminence has given us perhaps the most far-reaching and wide-ranging challenge of any Project to date. It is a tremendous challenge. God has inspired Sayidna JOSEPH with this vision; God will strengthen us to do our part. Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory forever!
