4 Church Etiquette or Some Things You Should Know While in Church Fr. David Barr Fr. David Barr is priest at St. Elias Antiochian Orthodox Church in Austin, Texas. This article has been abbreviated from the one that first appeared in The Word, January 1997, pp In the Orthodox Church, there are a lot of customs and traditions that are important parts of our worship. Some are cultural; some are pious customs. Some are essential; some are not. From time-to-time, we need to address some of these various etiquette issues to inform our communities how we can best understand each other and work together to worship the all-holy Trinity. Entering the Church (Late) The time to arrive at church is before the service starts, but for some unknown reason, it has become the custom - or rather the bad habit - for some to come to church late. If you arrive after the Divine Liturgy begins, try to enter the church quietly - and observe what is happening. If the Epistle or Gospel is being read or the Little or Great Entrance is taking place, wait until it is finished to quickly find a seat. If Father is giving the sermon, stay in the back until he has concluded. Try not to interrupt the Liturgy with you entrance. By the way, the best way to avoid this problem is to arrive on time - then you don't have to wonder if it's okay to come in or not. Crossing those Legs? In some Orthodox cultures, crossing one's legs is taboo and considered to be very disrespectful. In our North American culture, while there are no real taboos concerning crossing one's legs, we tend to cross our legs to get comfortable while sitting. Should we cross our legs in church? No. Not because it is "wrong" to ever cross legs, but rather because it is too casual - and too relaxed - for being in church. Just think about it, when you get settled in your favorite chair at home, you lean back, cross your legs, and then your mind can wander anywhere it wants to. When sitting in church, keep those feet on the floor, ready to stand at attention (which is what "Let us attend" means). Cross yourself with your fingers and hand - but don't cross your legs! In and Out In and out? It's a hamburger place in LA, but shouldn't be the traffic pattern by the back door during services. On some Sundays, it almost seems like we have a revolving door in the back of the church - and it is used by both children and adults. Use the restroom before coming to church. You shouldn't need to get a drink of water during the service (especially if you are taking Communion!). Don't come to church to go to the fellowship hall - come to pray. Leaving Before Dismissal Leaving church before the Dismissal - besides being rude - deprives us of a blessing. Worship has a beginning and an end. To leave immediately after Communion is to treat church like a fast food restaurant where we come and go as we please. In God's presence, we need to make every attempt to fight the pressure to move on to the next thing on the day's agenda. Eat and run at McDonald's - but stay in church and thank God for his precious gifts. Blot that Lipstick! Have you ever looked at an icon in just the right light and seen the lip prints all over it? It's disgusting, isn't it? In fact, it's downright gross. Lipstick may look fine on lips, but it looks horrible on icons, crosses, the Communion spoon and the priest's or bishop's hand. If you wear lipstick to church, blot your lips well before venerating an icon, taking Communion, or kissing the cross or the priest's or bishop's hand. Even better, wait until after church to put it on. After all, God is not impressed with how attractive you look externally - your makeup or clothing - but how attractive you are internally, your adornment with good works and piety. Continue next page

5 To Cross or Not To Cross Anyone who has looked around on a Sunday morning will notice that different people cross themselves at different times (and sometimes in different ways). To a certain extent, when to cross oneself is according to personal piety and not an issue of dogma. But there are times when it is specifically proper to cross yourself, and times when you should not. Here is a brief list of when to cross and when not to cross: To Cross When you hear one of the variations of the phrase, "Father, Son, and Holy Spirit"; at the beginning and end of the liturgical service or your private prayers; entering or exiting the church, or when passing in front of the Holy Altar; before venerating in icon, the cross, or Gospel book. Not to Cross At the chalice before or after taking Communion (you might hit the chalice with your hand); when the priest or bishop blesses saying, "Peace be to all" - bow slightly and receive the blessing; when receiving a blessing from a bishop or a priest (kissing the right hand of the bishop or priest is appropriate, but not making the sign of the cross). Handling the Holy Bread After taking Holy Communion and at the end of the liturgy, it is traditional to eat a piece of holy bread or antidoron - the bread that was left over after Holy Communion was prepared. While antidoron is not Holy Communion, it is blessed bread and as such, should be eaten carefully so that crumbs don't fall all over the place. You should only take one, or at most, two pieces of antidoron at a time, and should eat it once you return to your pew. And monitor your children as they take the antidoron and teach them to eat it respectfully. A Final Thought North American society in the late 20th century is rather casual in its approach to life. Don't allow this prevailing attitude to enter into your Orthodox Christian piety. There are surely a lot of other areas that could be covered here. Much of church etiquette is based on common sense and showing respect for God and others. Always remember that you are in church to worship God, the Holy Trinity. The priest says, "With the fear of God and faith and love, draw near." Let this be the way you approach all of worship. If you do, you will probably have good church etiquette.

6 BITS AND PIECES On February 17, after Forgiveness Vespers, many parishioners went to Braums for ice cream. Congratulations to Kacy Minks on her February 17 engagement to Trevor Bolm. 10 PARISH COUNCIL From the Ministry Teams There are so many changes going on at St. Mary right now. It is so exciting to see the work being done on the east parking lot. A huge thank you goes out to Eric Namee, Joey Salome, Tony Jacobs, and Ted Farha of Farha Construction for all of their hard work on this project. You may notice some changes soon to the kitchen in work space, shelving, and lighting. The kitchen committee has been finding ways to make the kitchen more user-friendly. We are grateful to The Belles for their donation of 20 new 8 ft. tables, which replaced 60 year-old tables that had become hazardous to use. We have a Craftsman 24 snow-blower that has never been used. It is a model and would sell for $ new. Please see Helen Stitt if you are interested in purchasing it. TEEN SOYO The St. Mary Teen SOYO has been busy during the first quarter of We made plans to attend the Parish Life Conference in Santa Fe this summer and fundraisers for the trip have begun. The parish generously supported our bake sale, allowing us to net over $700. We are very grateful for the continued support of our parish family. Our Lenten project this year was preparing a meal and serving it to the men who come to Interfaith Inn seeking warmth, food, and fellowship. The teens made a meal of goulash, salad, bread, and dessert. Afterwards, we traveled together to Interfaith Inn to serve the meal. It was a wonderful time of fellowship as well as a great opportunity to serve those in need. The men who came to be served enjoyed the smiles and servant attitude of our teens. We used 10% of our profits from the bake sale for the groceries to make the meal. So, in a way, the entire parish participated in our efforts. We will be hosting an Ice Cream Social for the parish on June 3 rd. This will be our final fundraiser before we head to Santa Fe. In an effort to make it possible for all our teens to travel to the PLC, we try to keep the out of pocket costs to a minimum for the teens families. All of the teens offer thanks to everyone for your continual support and encouragement.

11 From the Ministry Teams THE BELLES The Belles provided gloves and goodies to Subdeacon Ken Dannenberg our honorary Belle who always just shows up at the sink and starts doing the dishwashing at the church events. Thank you! The Belles of St. Mary have been busy. Since our March meeting we made cookies for the Mediterranean Festival, and made Holy Bread to restock the freezer. The Belles are also pleased that we could purchase 20 new 8 ft. rectangular folding tables for the parish hall. We want to remind all the women of the parish you are more than welcome to join us for any of our meetings. The Belles will next meet on May 16th at 6pm location TBA so watch for our announcement.

12 Tell us about your patron saint and why/he/she is special to you? Rick Husselman: In seminary (Protestant) I became aware of St. John of Krohnstadt. I was attracted to his teaching as he was always concerned for those "far from the church" as much as the faithful. One story goes that he encountered a drunkard in the gutters in Russia and held his head and told him he was a child of God. As a pastor I always felt a call to those far from the church or struggling with faith. Bob Laham: My Patron Saint is Joseph the Betrothed, as I was Baptized with the name Yousef, my Arabic name. And I have tried to pattern my Life in His Way. He is very special to me and has been with me all my life, looking over me and helping me to make my decisions and I call on Him often to show me the way. However as with all Lebanese boys, my Protector Saint is St. George, "Mar Jiryes", who I call upon for protection from all harm and Evil. I have had many close calls in my life, especially in my youth, and they have both been with me, thank God, Nushkur Allah! I pray they will be with me forever, leading and protecting me. Cheryl Jantz: My patron saint is Ruth. I identify with her because I am a convert to Orthodoxy. Ruth left her people and embraced a new life. I embrace Orthodoxy and the dear people in my home church, St Mary. Kelly Hewitt: My patron Saint is St Anthony the Great and he is awesome because he really is trying to get people following God because of his total commitment towards becoming closer to God and battling Satan and minions, thus others were inspired to the same and follow his example. Dennis Fairbanks: My patron is St. Peter. I ve found his story, his relationship with Jesus, and possibly the rock upon which the church was built compelling. He was a simple, uneducated man; quick to temper, but able to be gentle (learned from Jesus). He loved the sea, wanting to live by the sea and make his living from the sea. I have always felt I share a bond of sorts with people who stay connected to nature. I also believe he was the first to call Jesus the Savior, the Son of God. His boldness seemed to appeal to Jesus who often mentioned him first among his apostles / followers. I believe Peter was simple, yet when examined, quite complex. Deacon James Kallail: St James is known as the brother of the Lord because of his family relationship to Jesus as a son of St Joseph. He was with Jesus throughout His ministry with the Twelve and other disciples. In the icon of St Joseph leading the Holy Family to Egypt to escape Herod, St James is seen leading the donkey carrying Mary and the Christ child. Jesus appeared to St James after the resurrection. As the first Bishop of Jerusalem, St James was the leader of the emerging church. He was known as "Just" and "Righteous". For these and other reasons, St James is special to me, because of the example he provided to follow our Christ. Debbie Nassif: St. Mary. She is the Mother of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

16 The Birth of The Belles of St. Mary By Anita Stevens (Memory Eternal) In the very early 60 s, St. Mary was growing in age and numbers. The Ladies Club was active in dinners and helping with fund-raising activities. They were assisted by young women of the church who did not belong to the club. The thought came to Anita Stevens that is would be a good idea to have a young women's club for our church. So she approached her sister-in-law Lois Stevens and other young ladies about the idea and they heartily approved. Anita Stevens, Lois Stevens, and Sis Lamone sent out invitations to all future members to attend a Valentine Tea at the home of Anita Stevens on February 27, The turn-out was very encouraging and action was taken immediately. Now they needed a name for the new club. Mary Lambros, wife of Fr. George Lambros suggested the name The Belles of St. Mary and it was approved overwhelmingly. The first officers were Lois Stevens, President; Julia Yanney; Vice-President, Amelia Shaheen, Treasurer; Lydia Nassif, Secretary; Sis Lamone, Advisor. The Belles were very active putting on plays, box suppers and parish dinners, dances, ice cream socials, bake sales, Christmas parties, raffles, Thanksgiving dinners, and also assisting with the big public dinners of the church. The Belles visited the county hospital and gave birthday parties for the patients. They provided baskets of food at Thanksgiving and Christmas for poor families, among other charitable activities. They adopted a boy from Palestine, helping to support and take care of him. There are no written records of the early years so I am working from memory, stated Anita. She remembers fondly, It was always so much fun to get together. We really enjoyed each other. Anita feels The Belles have been and will continue to be a blessing to St. Mary. (Many thanks to Michelle Shaheen and Randa Stevens (Memory Eternal) who contributed to this article.)
