4 Jews To Know by Lee Jacobi The First Woman on the New York Stock Exchange Muriel Faye Mickie Siebert was born into a Jewish family in Cleveland, OH in She attended (Case) Western Reserve U. from 1949 to 1952, but left without graduating when her father fell ill. Siebert began her career in finance working at various brokerages. She claimed that she left each firm when she found she was paid less than men doing the same work. In 1967, she founded her own financial firm. That same year, she applied for a seat on the New York Stock Exchange. There had never been women seated on the NYSE. Of the first ten men she asked to sponsor her application, nine declined to do so. Siebert persevered, and was elected to membership on the NYSE in December In 1977, Siebert was named Superintendent of Banks for the State of New York, with oversight of all of the banks in the state. No banks failed during her 5-year tenure. Siebert stepped down to run for Senator; she lost in the Republican Party primary. Siebert returned to her firm, and became a soughtafter commentator on financial markets. Siebert was an outspoken advocate for women and minorities in business. She declared, "American.women executives can be a strong competitive weapon against Japan and Germany and other countries that still limit their executive talent pool to the male 50 percent of their population " and " men at the top of industry and government should be more willing to risk sharing leadership with women and minority members who are not merely clones of their white male buddies. In these fast-changing times we need the different viewpoints and experiences, we need the enlarged talent bank Siebert served as president of the New York Women's Agenda in During her term NYWA developed a program advocating "Financial Literacy for Women". She also sat on the boards of several other philanthropies. Siebert never married or had children. She died in 2013 at age 84. The NYSE named a room in the Exchange in her honor. If you would like to submit a recipe, please send it to Bernice Stein at jstein7901@aol.com Mediterranean Chick Pea Salad INGREDIENTS: For the Salad For the Lemon Parsley Vinaigrette 2 ( 15 oz) cans chickpeas, drained and rinsed 1 / 2 c. extra-virgin olive oil 1 medium cucumber, chopped 1 / 4 c. white wine vinegar 1 bell pepper, chopped 1 tbsp. lemon juice 1 / 2 onion, thinly sliced 1 tbsp. freshly chopped parsley 1 / 2 c. chopped kalamata olives 1 / 4 tsp. Red pepper flakes 1 / 2 c. crumbled feta salt, and freshly ground pepper Directions: 1. In a large bowl, toss together chickpeas, cucumber, bell pepper, red onion, olives, and feta. Season with salt and pepper. 2. In a jar fitted with a lid, combine olive oil, vinegar, lemon juice, parsley and red pepper flakes. Shake until emulsified, then season with salt and pepper. 3.
