1 The Link March 1, 2018 ALTAVISTA PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Broad Street P O Box 126 Altavista, Virginia , office , fax office@altapres.org Rev. Eduardo Soto, Jr , office , mobile AltaPres.org Facebook In This Issue Pastor s Page..1 Scriptures/Sermons.2 Session Minutes..3 Margaret s Article..4 Birthdays..4 From our Pastor This month we have a very unusual and unique event. A dear friend of mine from seminary, Mr. Mortiz Emmelmann, is a doctoral student at the University of Göttingen, located in central Germany (about two and a half hours northwest of Frankfurt). His research is what brought him to Princeton Seminary back in While there he studied a local Quaker School and continued his research into American Practical Theology. Most all of us know that America and Europe do religion and Christianity very differently. What may come as a surprise is that Germany, once the center of the Holy Roman Empire and the birthplace of the Reformation, is largely an agnostic state. While many are still baptized into a Christian church, few attend worship, and even fewer still are involved in the regular life of the church. This is not so in the States. Therefore, my friend will bring eleven of his students to the United States to experience first-hand the American expression of faith. They will interact with many great Christians and hear many powerful stories of life and faith from Boston to Atlanta. And we will have the unique opportunity to be part of that conversation. On Saturday, March 17, I will join these German students in Farmville, where we will tour the Robert Russa Moton Museum. For those who don t know, the Moton Museum is the former Black High School of Prince Edward County. Prince Edward County entered the annals of history when, in 1959, the School Board voted to close the public schools rather than integrate them. They remained closed for five years, only when the Supreme Court outlawed Virginia s private school tuition grants in One of the many individuals who were locked out from public education was Mr. Bob Hammond. Mr. Hammond would eventually become the president of the Moton Museum and, through the Hampden-Sydney Religion department, I was able to arrange his giving us a tour of the Museum. This should prove to be an eye-opening experience for these students. After our time in Farmville and on our way to Lynchburg, we plan to stop by the Appomattox Surrender Grounds. On Sunday, March 18, the twelve guests will join us for worship. I would like to encourage all of our members to interact with our guests, for they are here to experience faithful and active Christians. So don t be afraid to let the love of Christ shine through you. Sunday evening, we will have a Koinonia dinner in their honor and for their benefit. This will be a perfect opportunity to share in wonderful table conversation. After dinner, I have asked our own Ron Coleman
2 Monthly Calendar..5 Linda s Chili recipe..6 Monthly Happenings 6 Daily Scriptures..7 and Chip Roark, and pastor Brett Witcher of Lane Memorial, to be participants in a panel discussion about the American Religious Experience. There will be time after the presentations for questions from the audience, but I will give preference to the German students. I hope you will be able to join us Sunday both in worship and in fellowship. I also want to thank our panelist for their willingness to discuss their faith. And I especially would like to thank the hosts who have agreed to open their houses to our guests. 4 SAYINGS My grandfather had an apology he d use when mentioning an achievement of his. He d say He that blowth not his own horn the same shall not be blown. I had always thought it was a quote from the Bible, but other than the briefest reference to blowing your own trumpet in Proverbs 27, it is not. Granddaddy s twist on blowing one s own horn is used today, but not as an apology. Instead, it is the driving force behind the internet ads and TV commercials in our competitive business world. We have a number of common sayings that have entered our language directly from the Bible. For example, in Matthew 5: 15-16, we are told not to hide one s light under a bushel, meaning not to be unduly modest. We like that saying, and use our talents and abilities to bring recognition to ourselves, but we neglect the follow-up using them to bring glory to God. Another saying we re familiar with comes from Galatians 6:7, You reap what you sew. It means that actions have consequences, and is a handy quote for harassed law enforcement officials, climate-control observers, and parents of teenagers. The phrase handwriting on the wall comes from the 5 th chapter of Daniel. In the story, Belshzzar, the king of Babylonia commits a sacrilege against the Jews, and as a result a hand appears to write a warning of misfortune. Today, the saying can apply to messages on social media. Instead of words of warning on a wall, we see tweets from the White House, which prove, I suppose, that someone is tapping away.. A saying that can have repercussions comes from Matthew 7:6, in which we re told not to cast our pearls before swine. It means don t waste good things on people who will not appreciate them. It s an apt saying for today, but you ll want to use caution. If you tweet on Twitter who s swine and who isn t, you ll reap what you sew and see handwriting on the wall. M. Liebchen
