1 St. George Greek Orthodox Church Volume 15, Issue 4 August/September/October 2015 The Bi-Monthly Newsletter of St. George Greek Orthodox Church A Message from our Proistamenos TIMELINESS IS NEXT TO GODLINESS +Father Andrew Eugenis As Orthodox we seem to continually need to be reminded of our punctuality and timeliness in attending the divine services. EVERY Sunday, and I do mean EVERY Sunday; at the beginning of The Divine Liturgy there are only twenty to thirty people in church. However, at the call to communion with the fear of God and faith and love draw near" the church is overflowing. Why is this? Have we been trained from our formative years to do this? Or is it because we are Orthodox and hold the true faith and need not be on time? As we enjoy the last month of our summer vacation and begin the new school and Ecclesiastical New Year, I would like to share portions of an article with you that were passed on to me. The article describes some of us Orthodox and why we come to church late. I share it with you out of love and for your selfexamination. According to this article, latecomers to the Divine Liturgy and church services primarily fall into on of three classes. We are not speaking of those who come late once in a while, because there can be a thousand and one justifiable reason for an occasional lapse. But those who almost always come in well after the priest has begun the Divine Liturgy, fall into one of these classes: 1) The unpunctual in everything. Some people are incorrigible putterers. They have never learned to organize their time so that they can do the right things at the right time. They come late to social events, to business engagements, to meetings with friends, and inevitability, come to church late. Only a pretty thorough self-going-over will change this slovenly habit that has been acquired. 2) The unpunctual because of indifference to the Divine Liturgy and the church services. These differ sharply from the first class because generally the only events they come to are church events. They get into the habit of coming late because of a half-conscious boredom they experience in church by not participating in the Liturgy. If they ever really analyzed it, they would here themselves saying: Liturgy and church services are tedious and long." Usually such late-comers are among those who dash out of church before services are over only to find themselves standing around, doing nothing once they have made their escape. 3) The unpunctual for publicity reasons. To this class belong the fewest in number, but their motives make them worthy of special note. They come late on principle, because it gives them a chance to display themselves before others by walking down the aisle of a church already full. 3 August-October 2015, Volume 15/Issue 4 THE BEACON Page 3 A Message from our Parish Council President I hope this letter finds you and your family in good health and enjoying the blessings of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. The first half of 2015 has been very kind to our St. George community. Late in June, we held our annual festival our major fundraising event of the year. Many of our parishioners worked long and hard hours to make the festival a success. While the weather didn t cooperate with us for Saturday, the turnout was strong on Friday and Sunday, with many more people from the greater Ocean Township area visiting our facility, taking in our Greek culture by enjoying the food, pastries and our GOYA dancers. While we may not have realized our financial goals, we did strengthen the spirit of community within St. George and our neighbors in Ocean Township. Also, at the end of June, we completed the sale of our former home in Asbury Park. The group that purchased the facility will continue to operate it as a church, and will be establishing a pre-school. In addition, the buyers will allow us to continue to operate the Soup Kitchen, serving local residents that are in need. The Parish Council is pleased with the sale it allows us to focus all our attention on our facility in Ocean. In addition, we recently hired a new business administrator for St. George, Michelle Michals, one of our parishioners. Michelle has a strong business and finance background, and will manage our growing facility. Michele Pfeiffer, who has been a part-time assistant in the office, will work with Michelle Michals in serving the needs of our parishioners. On behalf of Father Andrew, the Parish Council and the entire St. George community, I d like to express our thanks and appreciation to Kathryn Vellios, who left to pursue a challenging position in higher education. Kathryn was instrumental in establishing the church operations when we moved into our facility three years ago. We wish Kathryn well in her new position. As we enter the summer months, our children are off from school, Sunday School has ended and the beach beckons. But spiritual needs never take a vacation we always need the light of the Lord to guide us. Your church is here for you year round. In His Service, Spiro Pappas Continued from page 1/Father Andrew Eugenis What category do you fall into? Perhaps there are others that can be added to the list? Examine yourselves and allow us to begin to eradicate this illness that prevails throughout the Orthodox Church. Is it illness or apathy? We as Orthodox claim to hold the true faith! Then when the second coming occurs, will we be true to our habits and be the latecomers when the Kingdom door is closed to us for all of eternity? 4 Page 4 THE BEACON August - October 2015, Volume 15/Issue 4 SPIRIT OF STEWARDSHIP Chosen and Appointed by God to Go and Bear Fruit Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found faithful. (I Corinthians 4:2) Summertime is difficult for St. George because so many parishioners take a break from Divine Liturgy on Sundays to enjoy the warm weather, go on vacation and spend time with family and friends. Our Lord, however, is always with us. The electric, water and phone bills are also. Please don t forget our Church during this time of year while you re enjoying the glorious season. Our Lord Jesus Christ has blessed us with this beautiful complex, but it s up to us to maintain and keep it open and flourishing. Ministry leaders met in June to set the schedule for the new ecclesiastical year in September. We re very excited by the many new activities planned by our ministries for you and your family. All that s missing is you get involved and offer your time and talents to benefit St. George and, in turn, reap the rewards. Consider perhaps teaching a Sunday School class or adding your beautiful voice to the choir. Our AGAPE Ministry has a special spot for you in one of many mini-ministries. Philoptochos gives you the opportunity to offer philanthropy to the needy. Our JOY, HOPE and GOYA youth ministries are thriving and welcome new young people. Ask any of our Parish Council members in the Narthex on Sunday about our ministries; speak with one of the greeters or with any of us during coffee hour; take a peek at the ministry announcements in the weekly Sunday Bulletin. We welcome you to join us in doing Our Lord s work. There s a place for everyone at St. George, and you re invited to join our growing parish family. The doors of our Church of St. George are open and waiting for you every Sunday during the summer months, whether it s rainy or a hot and sunny beach day. Come on in, light a candle, venerate the icons, sit in a pew, listen to the Epistle and Gospel readings, allow the Byzantine chant to soak into your being, listen to an inspiring sermon, receive the precious gift of Our Lord s Body and Blood and mingle with our Orthodox community during coffee hour fellowship before hitting the sand and waters of the Atlantic. You ll be glad you did. Give the Gift of Stewardship, and Reap its Rewards. Witness the Spirit of Stewardship in our beloved St. George Church. Become a part of our growing and vibrant community. Time + Talent + Treasure = Stewardship Be a good steward. We are grateful to all the Stewards of St. George. Barbara Kissas Terlecsky Stewardship Chairman bterlecsky@aol.com Stewardship Tip: Envelopes marked Stewardship are available in the Narthex. Put your weekly commitment in one of those envelopes along with your name, and we will credit your contribution to your Stewardship commitment. Deposit the envelope in the offering tray. It s an easy way to fulfill your commitment. Stewardship packets are also in the Pangari. Become a Steward today!
5 August-October 2015, Volume 15/Issue 4 THE BEACON Page 5 August 2015 Dear Members and Friends: Saint George Greek Orthodox Church Philoptochos In keeping with our charitable and philanthropic mission, Saint George Philoptochos will hold the Annual August Bake Sale on Sunday, August 9 and Saturday, August 15, 2015, to raise funds for this purpose. We will begin the sale immediately after Church services. Your favorite pastries or your generous donations will be greatly appreciated, as they are needed to continue to serve the philanthropic works of the Philoptochos Mission. Please contact us through the Parish Office to make arrangements or mail your donation to the Church, earmarked Philoptochos. As you know, Philoptochos, the charitable arm of the Church, looks to you, the dedicated parishioners of St. George, to reach out and embrace our mission, which is to be a friend to the poor and a caretaker of those in need. Now more than ever the mission of Philoptochos is especially important because of these extremely difficult economic times. As all sectors of our society are affected, we know everyone is more mindful of how we spend our money. However, the Ladies of Philoptochos must continue to be sensitive to those we serve, as there are many whose very existence is threatened and many whose next meal may not be provided. The result of your caring, empathetic gesture is simply your way of helping those less fortunate, the basic foundation of Christ s loving teachings. God bless you for your generous ways and keep you in the light of his love. In The Service of Christ, Reverend Father Andrew Eugenis Proistamenos Elise Rogers Philoptochos President

13 August-October 2015, Volume 15/Issue 4 THE BEACON Page 13 GOYA, Greek Orthodox Youth of America, is the official youth group of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. All young people from 7 th to 12 th grade are invited to participate. The goal of our St. George GOYA is to involve our youth in events where they can learn about their heritage, culture and religion in a fun atmosphere. We have a very successful parish youth program with over 70 members. We encourage their involvement in our State Youth Programs which helps them to meet other Greek young adults. We have lockins with different topics presented from faith to current events. We serve the community by cleaning the cemetery twice a year and visiting parishioners homes to Christmas carol. We also offer many activities including retreats, boys basketball, girls volleyball, bowling tournament, dances, Sights and Sounds and Olympics. There is definitely an activity that each and every young person will enjoy and excel at. In September, GOYA will have a Kick-Off party at the home of the Scheidt family. Also in September at our Holy Cross celebration in Asbury Park, four of our GOYAns will dive to retrieve the cross. They are Nick Lovoulos, Sophia Mazzini, George Paragioudakis and Maria Natsis. In October the district youth will meet for their first dance of the year. This is the chance for all the young people of the different churches to come together as one family. Also in October, George Costidis and Sophia Mazzini will represent St. George in the Mr. and Miss GOYA Pageant. If you have a child entering the 7 th grade this fall, please go to our church website at then go to the ministries section, find Goya in the drop down section and fill out the registration form. You can also contact the church office for more information. There is no better place for our young people than being a part of our community. 14 March/April Page , Volume 15/Issue 2 THE BEACON August March/April - October 2015, Volume 15/Issue Page Topic: Malala Yousafzai is an inspirational example of fighting fearlessly for a noble cause in spite of threats against her life. Discuss a young saint or person from the Bible who illustrates such courage. Have you ever been put in a situation where your faith was doubted? Have you ever been forced to do or say something you didn t believe was right? Has your faith ever been tested to the point where your very life was at risk? If you have never been in a situation like this consider yourself lucky. Most people give in to peer-pressure, and become too scared to say what they truly believe. But those few people that are not afraid can be inspirational to those of us who are afraid. Malala Yousafzai is an inspirational teenager who was not too scared to listen to her heart. Malala was born and raised in Pakistan. Women in Pakistan are expected to stay at home and live a non-educated life where they are forbidden to go to school. However, Malala wanted woman to have the same education rights as men. So, when Malala was 14 years old she decided she would board a school bus just like the other teenage boys in her hometown. However, when she was on the bus, a Pakistanian SWAT member noticed Malala and shot her three times in the head. It was a miracle that she survived. Malala knew going onto the bus, she was putting her life at risk but that didn't stop her. Malala s efforts to become educated inspired many other young men and woman. In fact, in December 2014 at the age of 17, Malala became the youngest person to ever win a Nobel Peace prize. Just like Malala there are many saints and biblical figures that inspire us to have courage. One example from the bible where people had enough courage to defend their faith was the story of The Fiery Furnace in Daniel chapters 1 through 3 of the Old Testament. This is a story about 3 young men whose faith was put to the test. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were asked to bow down to a statue of the King Nebuchadnezzar. When the 3 boys refused to worship someone other than God, the king was insulted and sentenced all 3 boys to be burned in a fiery furnace. When in the fire the king noticed not only 3 figures but 4. Many people believe that the 4 th figure in the fire was Christ while others believe it was Archangel Michael. When the king saw more than 3 people in the fire he made them come out of the fire immediately. When the 3 boys came out of the flames unharmed the king acknowledged the power of God. Because of this miracle not only did the king let the boys go, he too started to worship and glorify God. These boys had enough courage to defend their faith and they were rewarded in the end. In our everyday life we are exposed to situations where our faith is doubted whether we realize it or not. Our situation may not be as serious and as life-threatening as Malala or the 3 boys from the fiery furnace, but if you listen to what your heart is telling you God will give you the courage to do what s right. Next time when your friends start to curse, your fellow employees start to gossip about the new boss, or when others want you to do something you know is wrong, stop and ask God for the courage to do what s right. 15 August-October 2015, Volume 15/Issue 4 THE BEACON Page 15 Topic: The St. Nicholas Church at Ground Zero, which was destroyed on September 11, 2001, is soon to be rebuilt. Discuss the ways in which this tiny church building will now become a symbol of the universal themes of victory over evil; healing and hope; and being a beacon of Orthodox Christianity. The site will command a panoramic view of the National September 11 Memorial." This "Liberty Park" will create " a landscape for the new St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church; to provide a gathering space to allow visitors to contemplate the whole memorial in a single sweeping glance from treetop level." David Dunlap, New York Times, September This new St. Nicholas Church and National Shrine that Mr. Dunlap writes about will belong to all of us as Greek Orthodox Christians and is our opportunity to claim our spot in the American religious family to reach out to others by showing that terror and death do not destroy us, but give us the chance to become greater. The original, tiny, St. Nicholas, established in 1916, was located in the shadow of the South Tower and was crushed when that tower crumbled. St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church was the only house of worship destroyed on the day that our nation will never forget, September 11, For many Greeks immigrants, St. Nicholas would have been a first stop after seeing the Statue of Liberty and coming from Ellis Island. The church was a spiritual center, open to all: Greek Orthodox Christians and people of all faiths would stop by to light a candle or say a prayer. I was three years old on the very sad day, so I don t remember the feeling of horror and devastation. However, as the years go by I have learned from school, my parents and watching television programs that relive the horror. It was a day where our country was attacked on our soil, and where thousands died just because they went to work. I see my parents choke up and tears up when they speak about a cousin, John, who was in the building, and whose body was never found. But just because I don t remember that day, it doesn t mean that I can t understand what our rebuilt St. Nicholas Church will mean for our Greek Orthodox community. About a year and a half ago I had the honor to go, with my GOYA, to the World Trade Center site. A parishioner, and former head of the Port Authority, took us to the top of the new Freedom Tower. From way up I was able to see the raised platform where our new church will stand. Like the Parthenon in Greece, built on the Acropolis our Church will be a spotlight for our faith. It should not difficult for anyone to see that Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church at the World Trade Center, a National Shrine of our Archdiocese, will truly be, as the Lord preached in the Sermon on the Mount, and as is written in Matthew, Chapter 5, verse 14. "The city set on a hill that cannot be hidden". It will be the only religious recognition on the 16 acre site where the Memorial and Museum stand. Our faith, small in numbers, but large in devotion and commitment, will be at the center of one of the most visited places in the world. Archbishop Demetrios of America states that the building of the St. Nicholas church is a matter of spiritual destiny, so that the millions of people who will visit the historic site of the World Trade Center may find the marking place of a national tragedy, a sanctuary of solace and prayer, a concrete and visible testimony of renewed faith and hope. Its doors will reopen again, as they were in 1916, for all to light a candle, say a prayer, or just sit quietly. It will shine as a spiritual beacon of hope and rebirth to cherish the memory of those who were lost that day, and to build a better future for generations to come. In closing, well-known Greek American author, Nicholas Gage, in his article St. Nicholas Ground Zero: Out of the Ashes, A New Symbol of Faith, writes A terrible tragedy has brought us the opportunity to leave our mark on our new-found land and to do it in a way that is worthy of our faith, fitting to the memory of all those who perished on 9/11, and mindful of the promise of Jesus when he said, "My house shall be called a house of prayer for all people." 20 Page 20 THE BEACON August - October 2015, Volume 15/Issue 4 MOTHER OF THE YEAR Soula Tsettos Soula Tsettos was born and raised in Athens, Greece. She excelled in school, studied ballet, the arts, and politics. Long before moving to the states, Soula worked as an interior decorator and later opened an advertising agency in Athens. She made many friends from the artistic world such as directors, producers, and actors, as well as the political world and the royal family. Her ability to connect with various groups was evident and came naturally to her. Later in Soula s life, she met Yanni Tsettos. After some time, the two began their relationship and eventually married on February 7th, On that day, she not only became a wife, but took on the role of a mother to her step son, Sotiris. Her love and respect for Sotiris helped form a special bond between the two of them. A year and a half later, Soula gave birth to her first child, a son named Denny. This was truly a defining moment in her life. After a few years, the idea of bigger opportunities came forth for Soula and the family. So, in 1974, after long consideration, the family moved to the United States. The move landed them in New Jersey. After moving a few times within the state, they found themselves settled in Ocean Township, where they still live today. One year later, Soula and the family welcomed another child, this time a girl, named Nadia. Throughout her kid s school years, Soula, was heavily involved in all their activities. She was on the PTA and assisting at recess. She was a soccer mom, dance mom, softball mom and a cheer mom. When her kids were in elementary school, she was always the parent that handled all their school events, big or small. When it came to underfunded activities, like her daughter s twirling squad, Soula designed and sewed every single uniform that was needed for their first parade. When her kids had a class party or a play, it was Soula that made hundreds of handmade decorations, costumes and usually provided most of the food. Her support and dedication to her kids, school and community was not just something she did, but more so, who she is. Soula s commitment to her family, friends and church is limitless. That s why, it was no surprise to anyone that 18 years ago she put her dedication towards helping even more of the community when she started volunteering at St. George s Soup Kitchen. After working in the kitchen for a little while, Soula witnessed the tremendous need for this service in her community and made it a priority to improve it. She spoke with some of her contacts about her Monday mornings and through those conversations began to find donors to accumulate more food for the kitchen. These donations were not dropped off at the church, but consisted of daily pickups at all times of the day or night by Soula. After collecting the food, she would head to the church to fill the freezers or start preparing it for Monday. She established even more relationships with other sources for donations and has made St. George s Soup Kitchen what it is today. To say that Soula is dedicated, is an understatement. Throughout all her volunteering and commitments, Soula s family is always her number one priority. She will always be the go to person for her three children and now her six grandchildren. When her 11 year old grandson, Dillon, was asked to describe his Yia Yia, he used words like; Smart, selfless, funny, caring and of course, awesome. When asked how his Yia Yia makes him feel, he had just one word. Loved. One of the most powerful words that can be used and one of the most fitting.

22 Page 22 THE BEACON August - October 2015, Volume 15/Issue Metropolis of New Jersey Philoptochos Honoree of Chapter 1021 Stella Gealoris Chosen unanimously by the Board of Directors of Philoptochos Chapter 1021 as the 2015 Metropolis of New Jersey Philoptochos Honoree from Saint George Greek Orthodox Church, Ocean, New Jersey, Stella Koutros Gealoris, has led a remarkable life that exemplifies the power of positive thinking. As Orthodox Christians, we call it faith ; faith in knowing that our lives are in the hands of God. In this we trust. Stella was born on the island of Mytilene, Greece, in 1929, to Vasili and Harriette Koutros. She was only two (2) years old when her mother tragically died during childbirth. Her father, Basil, died the following year, leaving the three years old Stella orphaned. She was raised by her loving grandparents, owners of a dairy farm, in Greece. In 1950, Nick Gealoris, who was originally from Mytilene, returned to Greece from the United States to find a bride. A meeting of the couple was arranged by their families, and as was the custom of the day, Stella and Nick were married. The couple honeymooned in Paris, then migrated directly to the United States on May 6, 1950 and immediately settled in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Very soon after that, Stella became involved with the Saint George Church community and Philoptochos. Stella made many lifelong friends in those early years. Philoptochos became her family, as she had no relatives in the United States. In 1952, her first child, Angie, was born, followed up by a son, James, in As her children were growing up, Stella s life was centered around the Church. She kept her children involved with Saint George through Greek School, Sunday School, GOYA and the Maids of Athena. The Philoptochos Society kept her busy while she raised her family in a faithful and Christ centered way. In 1974, Stella s daughter Angie married John Vrettos of Trenton, New Jersey. Committed members of Saint George Church, they are active in the community and reside in Interlaken, New Jersey. Stella s son James, who married in 1986, and his wife Lissa Smuda of Locust, New Jersey, reside in Wayside. Nick and Stella moved from Asbury Park to Interlaken in Unexpectedly, Nick died in 1991, leaving Stella a widow at a relatively young age. Once again, Stella found her solace and strength in her Church. Through the years, she stayed very active in Philoptochos and along with her complete devotion to her children, grandchildren and now great-grandchildren, Philoptochos has been a large part of her life. Stella Gealoris leaves her mark on every bake sale or major Philoptochos event, as her baking skills are well known and trusted within the community. Along with this, Stella has worked hard as a volunteer in the Saint George soup kitchen every week since the life of the program. But, perhaps the most significant honor Stella received over the years was the Philoptochos Mother of the Year Award in 2005; an honor she still holds very dear. Stella has five (5) grandchildren; Stephanie, Alexandra and John (Vrettos) and Samantha and Nick (Gealoris). She also has three great grandchildren; Matthew, Nicole and Stella. A fourth great grandchild is due in September. Stella s priority in life has always been her family and her Church. A supportive woman filled with positive energy and forward thinking, Stella is a miracle of nature and a woman of remarkable inner strength, faith and love.
