1 St. George Greek Orthodox Church Volume 14, Issue 6 November/December 2014 The Bi-Monthly Newsletter of St. George Greek Orthodox Church A Message from our Proistamenos GIVING THANKS Father Andrew Eugenis In the United States, the month of November is dedicated to giving thanks. As Orthodox Christians, each and every day we should be offering thanks to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for the blessing He has bestowed upon us. As a parish, I truly believe we have been blessed over the years. We can look back at the eighty-five years of ministry and see the fruits of all who have labored coming to fruition. Part of the mission of an Orthodox Church is to reach out beyond its own community to help others in need and to grow the faith. This can only be done through the many ministries of the church with EVERY MEMBER participating in the life of the church. As stewards (members) we are all individual lamps which make up the beacon of our Orthodox Church. During the Byzantine Empire, it was individual members in ministry who worked in and established hospitals, cared for the elderly and homeless as well as widows and orphans. Collectively, they became a beacon for the church by meeting the needs of people through their ministry. Our own beacon of Orthodoxy has been lit and people from all denominations and walks of life are seeking the Orthodoxy Church and visiting us. We ALL must be active participants in the ministries we enjoy serving as stewards of Christ s Church. The more we become involved, the better we feel about ourselves and the brighter our own personal beacons become. As we grow as individuals, so too our church grows. In November, Philoptochos emphasizes one of its many missions, of outreach. November is Family Outreach Month. Our entire St. George Parish along with our Philoptochos ladies has chosen Sun., November 23to be Family Outreach Sunday. 3 November/December, 2014/ Volume 14, Issue 6 THE BEACON Page 3 A Message from our Parish Council President I hope this letter finds you and yours doing well. In today s trying times with so many challenges facing us, we need the strength our families, friends and Jesus Christ to overcome the daily trials of life. As we enter the final two months of 2014 and I reflect back on the year, I believe it has truly been a good year for St. George. We saw the addition of several new ministries to help our community Our festival was not only a financial success, but an amazing beacon of outreach to our community We welcomed new members to the parish We have expanded the use of our facilities And yet, we still have more work to do in these final months of the year. On November 2, at our Parish General Assembly meeting, Father Andrew, the Ministry leaders and the Parish Council will share with you the spiritual, community and organizational developments we experienced in In addition, we ll be sharing with you our plans and our proposed budget for As always, this is an opportunity for you -- a steward of our community -- to participate in shaping the future direction of St. George. I pray you will attend and bring other stewards with you. Only through the broad participation of all our members can St. George succeed in its mission to enhance the spiritual and social lives of our parishioners and our greater Ocean Township community. On November 23 rd, we will be having our first Stewardship Sunday for Some of you may ask why we hold Stewardship Sunday for next year, before the current year has ended. We, like many other churches in our Metropolis, choose an early date in an effort to begin the process of gathering the commitments of all our parishioners. Your stewardship commitments will enables us to plan ahead to insure that the needs of our St. George parish are fulfilled in the New Year. You may also ask, is this strictly about the Church getting a financial commitment from me? While it is true, that the financial aspects of Stewardship Sunday can t be denied, Stewardship Sunday is about more than money! It is about enlisting the time, talents and experience of the many, many individuals who belong to our community. It is about getting a commitment -- from each and every one of you to using your God given talents for the continued growth of St. George. We are all very proud of our new St. George complex and the recognition we receive for supporting the communityat-large. However, IT TAKES OUR ENTIRE ST. GEORGE COMMUNITY to continue to maintain, grow and strengthen St. George both physically and spiritually! We have been blessed with many dedicated individuals who commit their personal time to our parish. Yet we need more people to share their ideas and suggestions, to help organize and run events, RECENT SACRAMENTS BAPTISMS Maya McKenna Barrett, Cameron Michael Van Norde Kirtley Rachelle Watts George Christopher Sariotis II Maria Christiana Maltabes CHRISMATION Nikole Sariotis WEDDINGS Christopher Sariotis & Brittany Vogel Christopher Saffos & Alison Kreger Alfred Angello & Yvonne Spiropoulos David Mountzouris & Malinda Manieri Christopher Cremer & Anastasia Konn Antonios Topakas & Elli Dimitroulakos FUNERALS Evangelia Vitoroulis, Evangelia Kapsaskis Joanna Pimenidis August 9 th August 16 th August 16 th August 23 rd September 6 th August 16 th August 16 th August 23 rd September 6 th September 7 th September 27 th September 28 th August 18 th September 13 th September 15 th To schedule a Sunday Memorial (Mnimosino) or 40 day Baby Blessing, please contact the Church office no later than Wednesday of that week. Everyone has something to offer an idea, a thought, a skill, a talent, time and your Church needs you. Please be an active part of St. George! On December 31 st, we will be having our New Year s Eve dinner dance in our Cultural Center (see the flyer on page 11 of this Beacon issue). It will be a wonderful opportunity to say goodbye to the old year and bring in 2015 with family and friends. Because of the great success of the New Year s Eve dinner dance in prior years, many of our parishioners asked that we do it again this year. I hope that you will all consider joining us for this event. Space is limited and reservations will be accepted on a first come, first served basis, so please make your reservations soon. In recent meetings, the Parish Council has continued to address the daily needs of St. George. The maintenance needs of our complex have continued to grow, as increased use puts additional wear and tear on the facilities. The Council members and many volunteers have been diligent in staying on top of the condition of the buildings inside and outside - making sure all our facilities are in their best operating condition and appearance. 6 Page 6 THE BEACON November/December, 2014/ Volume 14, Issue 6 ST. GEORGE GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH Ladies Philoptochos Society Backpacks for a Brighter Future With the combined efforts of the Soup Kitchen ministry and the generosity of the St. George Community, we were able to provide 36 children with backpacks filled with school supplies and toiletries. The backpacks were distributed ON Monday, August 25, 2014 to 18 girls and 18 boys whose school grade ranged from Pre-K to 9 th. The smiles on the children s faces were pure joy. They were excited to receive the backpacks and surprised with the school supplies and toiletries that filled the backpacks. One of the Pre-K boys was so excited, he insisted on wearing his backpack like his older sister. The backpack was almost his size and weighed more than he did, but he put it on, teetering at times, but he wore it home with pride. We were able to speak with most of the children and their parents. The children were excited to begin the new school year. High Fives and hugs were abundant, as were a few tears. Thank you to the parishioners of St. George for your personal contributions. Your generosity enabled us to provide backpacks, school supplies, and toiletries to these beautiful children in need. Thank You to Soula Tsettos for organizing the sign-up sheet each week to ensure that all the children were helped. Thank you to Rula Casey and all the volunteers from the Soup Kitchen for assisting with the distribution. Thank you to my family my mom, Angie; my sister Elaine; cousins, Patti Bolton, Joanne Kusulas, Mina Pappetas, and Tatiana Cruz. They helped shop, organize, stuff the backpacks and distribute to the children. A special Thank You Father Andrew and to each member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society your support and faith is inspirational. Thinking back, we didn t have any idea what this would entail we knew there was a need and we learned a lot from our first time. We are still collecting monetary donations to assist with offsetting of some expenses. Contributions should be made payable to and mailed to the Ladies Philoptochos, Attn: Backpack Outreach, In January, we will be starting the Backpack Program for Our first goal is Corporate Sponsorship. We plan on contacting many of the national and local businesses seeking their support. We are in need of help, from drafting correspondence, to phone calls, and shopping, just to name a few areas. If you would like to be a part of this outreach, please contact Patty Vlahos ( or patula65@aol.com). 10 Page 10 THE BEACON November/December, 2014/ Volume 14, Issue 6 St. George Cemetery Report On September 14, the Cemetery Association meeting was held to discuss two major topics introduced by President Stephen G. Pappayliou: a. The clearing of brush, trees and bushes which have grown so thick - on the left side section (near the condos) of the cemetery that eight graves are now covered. In addition to clearing this area, the driveway between sections A, B, C needs a protective coating or sealer due to the many cracks in the pavement. Separate bids were obtained for each project, including some just to do the clearing on the left side for between $13,000 - $14,000. There was a recommendation to accept the bid received from Ray Greaco s of $14,500 to do both projects, the clearing and the resealing of the driveway pavements. b. The second topic discussed was the need to increase the prices of graves and burials. For years we have maintained the same prices as follows: St. George stewards $750 per plot Non-members $900 per plot Grave-openings $800 each Research done on surrounding cemeteries showed their prices range from $1200- $2300 per grave plots and $1,000-$1800 per grave openings. After a lengthy discussion, the Association members unanimously approved the following increases in grave purchases and grave openings effective JANUARY 1, 2015: St. George stewards $ 950 per plot Non-members $1,200 per plot Grave-openings $1,000 each Fr. Andrews Message (Continued from Page 1) Each and every one of you in your own small way can participate in Family Outreach Sunday. Simply call or invite someone who you know who does not attend Liturgy regularly to come that Sunday. Speak to them about the ministries we have to offer and the facilities we have. You, as a member and steward of Christ s Church, are a disciple and beacon for Him. We ALL must participate in bringing the un-churched and non-regular members back into the fold. You have the power, as did the Disciples, to do something very simple that can have long term effects on our community; invite those who you know back to church and be a proud witness to your faith. Reach out, and be a part of the ministries of our church and give thanks for all of the Lords blessings he has bestowed upon you and our community. I have deep faith in our community and know through your continued participation in the ministries we will continually grow Christ s Church. President s Message (Continued from Page 3) The Asbury Park facility remains rented to the same church community. Our goal continues to be to sell the property for a fair price. The group currently renting the facility is interested in the purchase the building and but arranging financing has been a challenge for them. We will continue to market the property and hope we will be able to complete a sale in We are entering a strong season for gym rentals, as many leagues are starting back up after a summer break. Rest assured that our gym rental program does not in any way interfere with gym use by any of our St. George organizations or ministries. We reserve specific evenings for our St. George community groups to use the facility. Additionally, a new agreement with Buona Sera has been negotiated. In addition to an increase in rent they will contribute more to the cost of utilities. In closing, I want to say that I am proud of all we ve accomplished as a community. However, there is still much more to do. With your help and support, we will continue to make St. George a beacon of orthodoxy for our community and our Ocean Township community-at-large. Enjoy the upcoming holiday season with your family and friends. Keep the spirit of Christ in Christmas and rejoice in His birth. In His Service and with agape, Spiro Pappas

We also have once-a-year programs where we would be grateful to have assistance: Picture Day, Godparent Sunday, Nativity Pageant, Oratorical, Saturday of Lazarus Palm Making, Holy Friday Retreat and Graduation. 16 Page 16 THE BEACON November/December, 2014/ Volume 14, Issue 6 This year our St. George Church honored Mr. Gregory Sariotis as Father of The Year. Mr. Sariotis for many years has served as a GOYA Advisor, Coach and a 2 nd father to many of us. He always has smile on his face, has encouraged us to try our best and always made sure that we had fun. This made GOYA years some of the best memories in our lifetime. Mr. Sariotis, 87 years young was born in Asbury Park to George and Katherine Sariotis. He was educated in the Asbury Park School System until he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard. He proudly served in the North Atlantic until his discharge. He returned to High School to complete his education and coached the Freshman Football Team of He went on to the University of Miami and with other young Greek Veterans was honored to host Archbishop Athenagoras and receive his blessing. One of the first things he did on his return was to join the A.H.E.P.A. (Thomas Edison Chapter) and form a basketball team of young 20-year-olds to compete locally and with other churches until they qualified to represent the A.H.E.P.A. in the National Tournament in Chicago. They traveled to Chicago on three occasions and finally brought home the trophy. Gregory married Thalia Heleotis in 1951 and together they had three children; George, married to Cindie, Ellynn and Jamie married to Denny. He also has eight grandchildren; Gregory, Christopher, Ryan, Shannon, Wesley, Taylor, Kaylie and Ryleigh. On April 22 nd of this year, Gregory and his wife Nikole blessed him with a greatgrandson, George Christopher II. Mr. Sariotis has many accomplishments in his life--- As a teen, he twice swam for the cross. And then was in charge of the swimmers on Holy Cross day. In1964 he bought Oakhurst Country Day Camp and was the Owner/Director for 40 years. He was a member of our St. George Parish Council for over 24 years and was honored for his service in May 2009 by his Eminence, Metropolitan Evangelos. He was the first Recreation Director of Ocean Township and established the Township first Day Camp. Greg served on the Township of Ocean Sewerage Authority for 26 years. The Mayor and Council honored him in 2000 with the Lifetime Achievement Award. He was appointed Senatorial Aide to Senator Joseph Palaia and was his liaison between the Greek Community and local and state campaigns. Above all Mr. Sariotis has always made the time to attend all of his grandchildren s football, basketball, baseball and soccer games. Mr. Sariotis has served his family, his church, his community and his state but maintains that his greatest achievement in life is his family. It is a source of great pride to Mr. Sariotis that our St. George Church went from its humble beginning in a converted 6 th Avenue hotel to magnificent church we worship in now. He and his family have been a big part of our St. George parish from the beginning and he credits his dedication to his own father and in-laws who were active past Presidents of St. George Parish Council, A.H.E.P.A. and Philoptochos.

24 BEACON OF ORTHODOXY St. George Greek Orthodox Church 1033 West Park Avenue Ocean, NJ Non-Profit Org. U.S. POSTAGE PAID Red Bank, NJ Permit No. 393 CHRIST IS BORN! He was born in an obscure village, the child of a peasant woman. He grew up in still another village, where He worked in a carpenter shop until He was 30. Then for three years He was an itinerant preacher. He never wrote a book. He never held an office. He never had a family or owned a house. He didn't go to college. He never traveled more than 200 miles from the place He was born. He did none of the things one usually associates with greatness. He had no credentials but Himself. He was only 33 when public opinion turned against Him. His friends deserted Him. He was turned over to His enemies and went through the mockery of a trial. He was nailed to a cross between two thieves. When He was dying, His executioners gambled for His clothing, the only property He had... on earth. When He was dead, He was laid in a borrowed grave through the pity of a friend. Nineteen centuries have come and gone, and today He is the central figure of the human race, the leader of mankind's progress. All the armies that ever marched, all the navies that ever sailed, all the parliaments that ever sat, all the kings that ever reigned, put together, have not affected the life of man on earth as much as that One Solitary Life
