1 St. George Greek Orthodox Church Volume 18, Issue 5 November/December 2018 The Bi-Monthly Newsletter of St. George Greek Orthodox Church A Message from our Proistamenos SANTA VS. JESUS +Father Andrew Eugenis By the time you read this article, we will have already begun the installation of phase I and part of phase II of our iconography project. As a church family we will be celebrating the liturgy in our cultural center beginning on November, 11 th during the installation of our iconography. Our plan is to have it completed by Christmas. What a great way to celebrate Christmas, with the new iconography in our church! The rest of phase II and phase III will occur in the fall of 2019 leading to the consecration of our church sometime in the fall of 2020! As we celebrate this Christmas, we must remember our church and what an important role it plays in our lives and that of our children. We are all so busy this time of year and with everything that is going on we tend to lose our focus on church and that this is Christ's birthday celebration. I would like to share a story with you that reminds me of how we should think about Christ as we celebrate His birth: SANTA CLAUS VS. JESUS CHRIST -Santa lives at the North Pole; Jesus is everywhere. -Santa rides in a sleigh; Jesus rides on the wind and walks on water. -Santa comes but once a year; Jesus is an ever-present help. -Santa fills your stockings with goodies; Jesus supplies all your needs. -Santa comes down your chimney uninvited; Jesus stands at your door and knocks and He enters your heart. -You have to wait in line to see Santa; Jesus is as close as the mention of His name. -Santa lets you sit on his lap; Jesus lets you rest in His Arms. -Santa doesn't know your name, all he can say is ah! Little boy, little girl, what's your name?; Jesus knew our name before we did. Not only does He know our name, He knows our history and future, He even knows our hearts, and how many hairs are on our heads. -Santa has a belly like a bowl full of jelly; Jesus has a heart full of love, grace, mercy and forgiveness. -All Santa can offer is HO! HO! HO! ; Jesus says cast your cares on me for I care for you. JERSEY SHORE GREEK FESTIVAL OUTREACH FUND Please note that the application to nominate a 501C3 can be found in the Beacon on page 13. 4 Page 4 THE BEACON Nov./Dec. 2018, Vol. 18/Issue 5 Message from our Parish Council President Dear Fellow Parishioners, While the Church s Ecclesiastical calendar began in September, we are approaching the end of the 2018 calendar year. These two calendars guide our spiritual and everyday lives, and we should strive to keep them aligned. This year has been a busy year for our Parish. After several delays, our Iconography project has finally begun. By the end of the year, many of the major components of the Church will be completed; the Pantokratera, Arch over the Solea, Pendentives and Chapel will be complete. The iconographers will then return to Greece to prepare the final artwork, including the Platytera, to be installed by the end of See the article on Iconography for a fuller description on the status of the project (IS THERE ONE?). This is a major step on the path to Consecration of our beloved St. George, a significant milestone in the life of any Church. Because of the size and importance of this project, we want and need all members of our community to be part of this all important project. There has also been a lot of work done to keep the complex in top condition. In addition to day to day maintenance, several compressors and boilers were replaced. Floor and roof repairs were done. Plans were finalized to fix the retention basin and erect a much needed storage building at the rear of our property. We also began planning repairs to the steps at the main entrance of the Church that are showing signs of wear. It takes a great deal of work to maintain the buildings and grounds in a complex that is so heavily used. With regard to Stewardship, we ve seen a slight increase in the number of Stewards and total Stewardship contributions. Father Andrew and the Parish Council believe there is potential to grow the number of Stewards. We all know people who are not active in the life of our Church. Let s all reach out to them to become part of St. George. Not only will St. George benefit, but they will be rewarded by being part of something larger, the life of our Church and the teachings of our Lord. And, since Stewardship is a critical source of operating funds, I ask you to fulfill your obligations for 2018, and to be as generous as you can in making your 2019 Stewardship commitment. We held our Fall Parish Assembly meeting I wish more parishioners attended. This is when Stewards have a chance to learn about everything going on in our community ecclesiastical events, finances and community programs. The 2019 operating budget was approved, with a slight operating deficit. However, this is a realistic estimate of the costs of running a Parish with more than 350 families and multiple religious, cultural and social programs. The Parish Council works hard to manage expenses and we feel those efforts, plus greater participation by our community, will keep any deficit to a minimum. Our Church and community are recognized as one of the leading parishes and complexes in the Metropolis. This is the result of the dedication and hard work from you, our parishioners, Father Andrew and your Parish Council. Together, we can make St. George even better. On behalf of our entire Parish Council, I wish you and your families a Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas and a very blessed New Year! Thank you, John Vrettos Message from Father Andrew continued from page 1 -Santa's little helpers make toys; Jesus makes a new life, mends wounded hearts, and repairs broken homes - Santa may make you chuckle, but Jesus gives you joy that is your strength. -While Santa puts gifts under your tree; Jesus became our gift and died on the tree for you and for me. It's obvious there is no comparison. We need to remember who Christmas is all about. We need to put Christ back in Christmas. Jesus is still the reason for the season. Yes, Jesus is better. He is even better than Santa Claus. With Jesus is in our hearts; all we have to do is open the door! We have to remind ourselves of this each and every day and all of the blessings He has given each and every one of us and our St. George community. With the holidays upon us, no matter who we are, we all tend to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the season and lose sight of the true meaning of Christmas. Let us first give thanks to Him for all of the blessings He has provided for us and being part of His Church of St. George. Let us come together as a united family under His roof to celebrate this great feast. This Christmas, take time to receive the Gift of Gifts, which Jesus offers to us, and attend the Divine Liturgy and receive His Precious Body, and Blood as we move back into our church and begin to enjoy the new iconography in our church and move to the consecration of our church home In this way you will be remembering Jesus on His birthday, December twenty-fifth, the day salvation was born for the entire human race! If we can remember Him on His birthday; think about how much easier it will be to remember Him as we continue to do our work at building up the ministries of our church home the other three hundred sixty four days of the year. May you all have a blessed Christmas!

5 Nov./Dec. 2018, Vol. 18/Issue 5 THE BEACON Page 5 SPIRIT OF STEWARDSHIP Be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share. 1 Tim 6:18 Everything we have is a gift from God. We take what God has given us and return it to Him as an act of our thanksgiving and praise. As Stewards of God s gifts, we return to Him a portion of our time, talents and treasures for Christ s work on earth through His Church. A parishioner/friend sent to me the following article that I would like to share with you: WHY GO TO CHURCH? A Church goer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday. He wrote: "I've gone for 30 years now, and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons, but for the life of me, I can't remember a single one of them. So, I think I'm wasting my time and the preachers and priests are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all." This started a real controversy in the "Letters to the Editor" column. Much to the delight of the editor, it went on for weeks until someone wrote this clincher: "I've been married for 30 years now. In that time my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals. But, for the life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those meals. But I do know this: They all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had not given me these meals, I would be physically dead today. Likewise, if I had not gone to church for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!" Faith sees the invisible, believes the incredible & receives the impossible! Thank God for our physical and our spiritual nourishment! B. I. B. L. E. simply means: Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth! In conclusion, by attending our St. George Church and becoming its Stewards we will be able to attain that so needed spiritual enrichment which will allow us to better face the daily routine and its problems with work, family issues, etc. We all need that spirituality regardless of how strong we feel we are and claim to be. Operation of our Church is a 24/7 year-round event with regular worship, social activities, caring for sick and homebound members, planning weddings, baptisms and funerals, ministering to the hungry and homeless in our community, providing advice and guidance when needed, supporting 37 Ministries, repairing and maintaining its facilities, just to name a few!. Upon reading this article, if you have not donated towards your 2018 Stewardship, please kindly do so. Our Stewardship Program is running below Budget and at a 35% deficit. I am sure that with your help and generosity we will be able to close that gap and meet our Budget before the end of the year! Like any household, God s Household in Ocean has expenses and needs your help. It is up to all of us, as a family in this house of the living God to do our individual best to support our St. George. Lastly, November is the time for giving Thanks to our Lord. As we welcome the Holiday season with the celebrations of Thanksgiving in November and Christmas in December, these are days that we reflect on the blessings our Lord has given to us and our loved ones. We at St. George are thankful for many things, but as a congregation, we are most grateful for our Church home in Ocean. We worked hard to build our new complex, and now we extend our thanks to our Lord as we enjoy the fruits of our labor. A heartfelt thank you to all our good Stewards of St. George and a warm welcome to all new Stewards. Per Fr. Andrew s words: What we are is our gift from God. What we do with that gift, is our gift to God. Please be generous to St. George by offering your Time, Talents & Treasures. God bless us all and keep us healthy. Have a Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas! 6 Page 6 THE BEACON Nov./Dec. 2018, Vol. 18/Issue 5 ICONOGRAPHY PROJECT Our St. George Iconography Committee is proud to announce that Mr. Giariskanis and his team of iconographers have begun the first phase of our Iconography Project. They are currently working on the Pantokratera (dome) in the St. Efstratios Chapel and in early November they ll move to the main Church to begin installation of the Pendentives, Arch over the Solea and the Pantokratera in the dome. Please keep in mind that during these months the church will be closed and Liturgy will be held in our Cultural Center. We are extremely hopeful however, that we will be able to celebrate Christmas in the Church Financially, we currently have pledge donations in the amount of $847,000 representing 64% of our total goal of $1.3 million. We thank everyone who has contributed to date and ask that each and every community steward donate to the project and be a part of Leaving our Mark for generations to come! No donation is too small and there are many ways to donate. Now is the time! Icons are still available for naming opportunities. Consider sharing an icon with family members or friends. (See next page for opportunity to be a part of St. Mary of Egypt icon). Additionally, a Gold Leaf program has been initiated where you can buy one or more sheets of gold leaf as a donation or to memorialize a loved one. There will be a community fundraising reception on November 17, 2018 in our Cultural Center. All the information for donating is outlined on the following pages. Iconography is a critical part of our religious heritage. In the coming weeks and months, Father Andrew will be discussing the importance of iconography to our religious heritage. On November 4 th, he will do a teaching liturgy where he ll explain different icons and their relevance to our Greek Orthodox faith and Church. This will be the last day that Liturgy will be held in the church until the first phase is complete. Iconography brings us one step closer to the Consecration of our St. George Orthodox Church. This project touches all that is holy in our Church, and all parishioners of St. George have the opportunity to be part of this effort. Every contribution will have a positive impact no contribution is too small and all contributions will be recognized at a later date. If you have questions about gifting, contributions, Gold Leaf or simply want more information on the project, please contact Father Andrew, frandrew@stgeorgeap.org, Anne Papageorge apapageorge@stgeorgeap.org or John Michals jmichals@desotc.com through the Church office Information is available on our website and pledges/donations can be made on-line at Listed on the following page are all of the icons and their value. George presented his preliminary work of the Pantokrator, an angel and the seal for the dome to the congregation. Welcome George!!! Our goal is to have Phase I completed by December 20 Why We Chose To Donate the Resurrection Icon "Resurrection is the basis of faith and hope. If Christ had not been raised from the dead, then our preaching is in vain, our faith also is in vain." (1 Corinthians 15:14 NASB) This is why we chose the Resurrection as our donation to the Iconography Project. That, and our belief that Iconography is the heart and soul of a church. Without Iconography a church is simply a structure, a shell. With Iconography that shell truly becomes a house of worship." - Jeff and Anne Michals

8 Page 8 THE BEACON Nov./Dec. 2018, Vol. 18/Issue 5 INTRODUCING OUR ST. GEORGE ICONOGRAPHY GOLD LEAF PROGRAM Icons, which have always been an integral part of the Greek Orthodox tradition, are painted biblical representations of events and/or saints of the faith. In the past, they were used as a way to spread Christ s love and message to those who were unable to read. Now icons keep our church saints and stories at the forefront of our mind, remembering them always in our liturgical services. Every Greek Orthodox Church must have icons adorning the walls of their interior in order to be fully consecrated. Our St. George Greek Orthodox Church has now embarked on our iconography project. A focal point of every Greek Orthodox Church is the icon of the Pantocrator on the dome of the church. As with all our icons, this icon of Jesus, surrounded by angels, is typically enhanced by genuine 24karat gold leaf. We have established the Gold Leaf Program to give everyone the opportunity to participate in our iconography project and be remembered for future generations. Please consider purchasing sheets of gold leaf to honor the memory of a departed loved one or simply to be a part of our iconography project. At the completion of the project, a special memorial service will be held in our church to honor your loved ones and every donation will be remembered at a later date. Please use the form below to make your donation. We thank you in advance for your gift. ST. Date CSV# Name on credit card Signature ST. MARY OF EGYPT On the Fifth Sunday of Lent the Orthodox Church commemorates our Righteous Mother Mary of Egypt. The feast day of Saint Mary of Egypt is April 1, however, she is also commemorated on this Sunday due to her recognition by the Church as a model of repentance. She began her life as a young woman who followed the passions of the body, running away from her parents at age twelve for Alexandria. There she lived as a harlot for seventeen years, refusing money from the men that she copulated with, instead living by begging and spinning flax One day, however, she met a group of young men heading toward the sea to sail to Jerusalem for the veneration of the Holy Cross. Mary went along for the ride, seducing the men as they traveled for the fun of it. But when the group reached Jerusalem and actually went towards the church, Mary was prohibited from entering by an unseen force. After three such attempts, she remained outside on the church patio, where she looked up and saw an icon of the Theotokos. She began to weep and prayed with all her might that the Theotokos might allow her to see the True Cross; afterwards, she promised, she would renounce her worldly desires and go wherever the Theotokos may lead her. After this heart-felt conversion at the doors of the church, she fled into the desert to live as an ascetic. She survived for years on only three loaves of bread and thereafter on scarce herbs of the land. For another seventeen years, Mary was tormented by "wild beasts mad desires and passions." After these years of temptation, however, she overcame the passions and was led by the Theotokos in all things. There is so much more to the story of Saint Mary of Egypt and we hope that you will take a moment to read her entire story at She is not only a model of repentance, but an example to all women who strive to live an Orthodox life and make a difference by their example. An icon of St. Mary of Egypt has been pledged to the iconography project and it will be standing behind the chanters chairs. She will serve as a beacon of faith and hope to all who have labored tirelessly for the love of our Lord and His Church. It is our hope that ALL the women who serve our St. George church donate to the fulfillment of this icon. Donate in memory of the women who have come before us those who continue the work today and all of our children who will follow our example! The cost of the icon is $12,500 and to date, we have a commitment from women and children for $5,000. Please share St. Mary of Egypt s story with your friends & children and donate what you can to keep her story alive for generations in our St. George Church. For info, please contact Theo or at theok@stgeorgeap.org. Thank you in advance for your consideration. God bless you all to continue fighting the good fight

Edison Chapter, Order of AHEPA ended the year in June with over 30 members attending a dinner meeting at Neapoli restaurant in Red Bank. In attendance was the Past Supreme President of AHEPA, brother Andrew Zachariades along with past NJ District Governors Savas Tsivikos and Steve Xanthacos. Over the summer, President Arthur Pappaylion, along with George Haralampoudis, and Savas Tsivikos, were delegates to the AHEPA National Convention held in Atlantic City, NJ. AHEPANS in attendance, were able to raise over $100,000 for the Greek Fire relief fund within two days. The delegates also elected George E Loucas as the new Supreme President of AHEPA. Our chapter is now working to raise over $500 for the Greek Fire relief fund with our members contributing as well. At our recent meeting on September 17, our brothers nominated George Perentesis as the AHEPAN of the Year. His work and dedication to the ideals of AHEPA along with the hours he contributes to this organization makes him worthy of such an honor. We are all very proud of him. George has also been elected by the NJ District Lodge, to serve as the advisor to the Sons of Pericles. A mission with our youth that he is looking forward in work with. Our chapter is presently working on fundraisers, such as hosting a Cigar Night in the spring and trying again to have a Golf Tournament either in the spring or the fall of An executive meeting is being held on September 27 to implement our AHEPA commitments and charities. It is interesting to note that the Order of AHEPA is the largest and oldest grassroots association of American citizens of Greek heritage and Philhellenes with more than 400 chapters across the United States, Canada and Europe. There Hellenic ideals are to promote education, philanthropy, civic responsibility and community service and volunteerism. Come, join us as a member of our local chapter, and help us grow.

18 Page 18 THE BEACON Nov./Dec. 2018, Vol. 18/Issue 5 * Class Time: Immediately following Holy Communion until 11:40am Once again we are off to a great start for the Sunday School Year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank not only Father Andrew and the dedicated teachers for sharing their love of the faith, but also to all the parents who are bringing their children every week to learn about the love and life of Christ. This year we had approximately 20 new students join our Sunday School family. We look forward to seeing each and every one of them throughout the year. If you have not yet registered and are new to the community, please see their teacher or Kristen for a form (or take one from the Sunday School Bulletin Board or the Sunday School website and return it to the main office). If you have not registered for the year but have students who are returning to Sunday School, please contact Kristen to ensure your information is up to date. We are also currently looking for a loving and dedicated volunteer to help out in our second grade Sunday School class and join our family. Lessons and resources are available, though creativity is encouraged! Please contact questions if you are interested in learning more. Upcoming dates to remember: November 4: Godparent Sunday and Teaching Liturgy. Please invite your child s Godparent to join us in the Sunday School classrooms. December 9: Practice in the Church for the Nativity Pageant during Sunday School December 23: Nativity Pageant in the Church Any questions, please contact Kristen Cline: kristen.et.cline@gmail.com and put SUNDAY SCHOOL in the subject line VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL This summer we tried a new format for Vacation Bible School. Instead of a week long program, we had three Sundays of fun and education in the Orthodox faith. Over the summer our small but mighty classes learned about St. Helen finding the Cross, the importance of prayer in our lives, and the life of the Theotokos through stories and crafts. We are looking forward to continuing next summer and invite everyone to join us! Students decorated pots and crosses and planted basil to remember St. Helen s discovery of the True Cross. They also decorated frames for their icons and electric candles as they learned that icons, candles, and incense are used to help us focus as we pray to God. Through storytelling and great detective work, students used icons to illustrate their own book about the life of the Theotokos.
