1 St. George Greek Orthodox Church Volume 17, Issue 4 August/September/October 2017 The Bi-Monthly Newsletter of St. George Greek Orthodox Church A Message from our Proistamenos HAPPY NEW YEAR! +Father Andrew Eugenis September first is beginning of the New Ecclesiastical Year. Most of you will have already taken some vacation time by now. Are you rested and relaxed, or are do you feel the same as before you went on vacation? Some people are more exhausted after vacation and can t understand why! Some even take drugs to sleep, and then more drugs to stay awake during the day. As Christians, we should follow Gods plan, to rest one day out of seven. God loves us and knows us, He is our creator, and is the physician of our souls and bodies. We must follow Gods plan and allow our bodies, minds and souls time to rest and recharge. Relaxation has to do with the body and entertainment with the mind. We all must take time to physically refresh the body and entertain the mind. Most of us do this in one way or another. However, how often do we allow our souls time to rest and recharge? As Saint Augustine says, "My heart is not at rest until it rests in You." One way is to bring your soul and heart to church, to be recharged with spiritual energy. Your heart is like a battery, which fuels your soul, if left uncharged, it will run out of energy and fail. Please take a moment and evaluate your lives, have you spent enough time to rest, and recharge your physical batteries. But more importantly, check your spiritual battery, is it near empty after a long summer? The Church gives us many ways to recharge or spiritual battery; Holy Scripture, writings of the Fathers, Vespers and other prayer services, the Sacraments and much more. Truly, the one super charger we can all plug into is the Divine Liturgy to receive the body and blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It is through praying the liturgy that we come closer to Christ, then, and only then, do we experience Him first hand as we receive Him. It is imperative to be at the Liturgy from beginning to end, the entire service, to fully receive Christ. If we give praise to Christ fully, then we fully receive back from Him that which He has to offer. If we come late to services we do not fully receive of Him. How then can we expect to deal with the problems of this world if we deprive ourselves of that which Christ has to offer us, the spiritual nourishment for our souls! For us to overcome the pressures of this world we must fully give to God and then we will fully receive from him. I pray you will all have a blessed and fruitful new ecclesiastical year, but must importantly, be responsible for continually charging your spiritual battery! 3 Aug. /Sept. /Oct. 2017, Vol. 17/Issue 4 THE BEACON Page 3 A Message from our Parish Council President \ I hope this letter finds you well and enjoying the summer with families and friends. It s important to step back from the everyday tasks and appreciate the beauty life has to offer. Our iconography project is well underway (see page 5 for update and photos). The iconographer George Giariskanis is hard at work on the first phase of this three phase project. We expect the icons in this initial phase (including the Pantokratora (Dome) and areas in the center of the church) to be installed in the fall of this year. With the help of all of your donations, we expect the entire project to be completed in early The iconography will beautify the inside of the Church with icons in the Byzantine tradition. If you would like to participate in the iconography project, please contact Father Andrew. Please remember that no donation is too small. We just wrapped up our fifth Jersey Shore Greek Festival, which was a tremendous cultural, social and financial success. More than 6,000 people came to our facility to enjoy our Greek heritage, food, and music, and left knowing our Greek kefi and philotimo! On behalf of the entire Parish Council I want to express our sincere appreciation to the hundreds of parishioners who gave of their time, talent and treasures to make this festival a tremendous success. Without your commitment and dedication to St. George, we wouldn t realize the financial and social benefits the festival provides. As in past years, we will take a portion of the Festival proceeds and donate back into our community as an expression of gratitude and outreach. If you are a steward in good standing of St. George, please fill out the form in this issue and nominate a Monmouth County 501(C)3 charity that has meaning in your life. Although the Festival to provides us with financial benefits, Stewardship remains the basis for the Church s day to day operating expenses. We need a strong and growing stewardship to offer social, cultural and spiritual support to our community. So far, our Stewardship program is a little behind last year, both in the number of stewards and in actual contributions. Please remember St. George by becoming and fulfilling your Stewardship pledge. St. George needs you to be an active participant in the life of the Church. Not only will St. George benefit, but you will be rewarded by being part of something larger, the life of our Church and the teachings of our Lord. Also keep in mind that Stewardship means giving of your time and talent, as well as your treasures. There are many things that you can do to serve St. George. Please call the church office and sign up for one of our many ministries and organizations. A special thank you to Kristen Cline who has graciously agreed to become the new director of our Sunday School program. I would also like to welcome our new Greek School Director, Vasiliki Nikolettos. We look forward to this year of learning and growth for our Greek School program. 4 Page 4 THE BEACON Aug. /Sept. /Oct. 2017, Vol. 17/Issue 4 SPIRIT OF STEWARDSHIP Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. (John 15:2) The Stewardship Committee is often asked about the how to of Stewardship. A common question is, How do I pay my stewardship commitment after I have submitted my commitment form? There are a number ways: 1) mail your weekly, monthly, quarterly or semi-annual check to the Church; 2) pick up a Stewardship envelope in the Narthex, insert your commitment (be sure to include your name and Stewardship in the memo of your check) and leave the envelope at the Pangari or drop it into the tray that is passed during Divine Liturgy; 3) arrange to have the Church charge your credit card weekly, monthly, quarterly or semi-annually: or sign up online through Vanco and select the payment options. Our parish wants every family to be Stewards in Good Standing and participate in the life of the church. There are many ways in our very active community. And we re coming up with even more each day. What can you bring to the table? How can you become a part of our St. George family? Our recent festival saw many people who had not participated in the recent past. Yet they came to help to contribute to its success, and in doing so, they made many new friends and became a part of our St. George family. Need to learn more? Speak to a Parish Council member during Coffee Hour following Sunday Divine Liturgy! Participate! You ll be glad you did!!! Time + Talent + Treasure = STEWARDSHIP We welcome and are grateful to all our good Stewards of St. George Barbara Kissas Terlecsky, Stewardship Chairman, bterlecsky@aol.com Join our St. George Church group Facebook page. 6 Page 6 THE BEACON Aug. /Sept. /Oct. 2017, Vol. 17/Issue 4 Ladies Philoptochos Society Every September, the Philoptochos Board of Directors welcomes back the general membership.this year I am pleased to welcome 4 new members to the Board of Directors and 2 returning Board members to Philoptochos. Welcome Kasandra Moutis, Angie Gregos-Swaroop, Errie Teevan, Marissa Costidis, and returning Board Members Elayna Pappas and Athena Loesch. While many of you are vacationing in Greece or enjoying time off with family, Philoptochos is always working towards our Mission of helping those less fortunate and in need. Baking of our delicious traditional pastries takes place in July and early August for our August Bake Sale for Tis Panagias. During those hazy, lazy days of summer our dedicated women are working hard in the kitchen beginning early in the morning, making dough, rolling out koulourakia, layering filo for baklava, baking and boxing in preparation for the August Bake Sale. So much goes into a bake sale and this process is repeated several times during the year for our Fall Luncheon in October and then again for the Palm Sunday Bake Sale. We hope you visited and enjoyed the diverse selection of pastries at the Pastry Booth at our Annual Saint George Greek Festival. Philoptochos traditionally sponsors the Pastry Booth. Bakers and packers during our baking marathons are always welcome. You do not need to be experienced bakers we are willing to teach you. For the last three years on the last Monday in August, before Labor Day, Philoptochos joins with the Soup Kitchen & the new owners of our St. George in Asbury Park to sponsor the Backpack Initiative. This program supplies backpacks for children in grades kindergarten through eighth grade going back to school. A list of names, ages and grade are gathered by Soula Tsettos (Soup Kitchen). Parents & children come on the designated morning to pick up their backpack. It is a beautiful event to see the smiles and appreciation on the faces of the children and parents when they receive their backpack. We welcome monetary donations as well as donations of items. This past year we prepared 65 backpacks. Every year in the fall, Philoptochos prepares Thinking of You packages to send to our college bound GOYAN students as a reminder that they are always in our thoughts and prayers and wished well as they embark on their new adventure. SAVE THE DATE: The Annual Fall Luncheon this year will be held on October 14 th, 2017 at Eagle Oaks Golf Club in Farmingdale, NJ. This is our biggest fundraiser and the one we depend on to support our budget for the year. The profits from our luncheon allow for our continued ability to aid the sick, poor, and elderly as well as to promote the charitable, benevolent, and philanthropic purposes of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, through instructional programs, presentations, lectures, seminars, and other educational resources. This year under the auspices of His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios, Geron of America and the blessing of our beloved Metropolis Evangelos of New Jersey, the Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society of the Metropolis of New Jersey is honored to host the Sixteenth National Philoptochos Children s Medical Fund Luncheon on Saturday, November 11, 2017 at The Venetian, in Garfield, NJ. The Luncheon is returning to the Metropolis of New Jersey for the first time since The monies collected from this luncheon will provide substantial grant awards to hospitals and special children s medical programs throughout our Metropolis. Established in 1989 by the National Philoptochos, the Children s Medical Fund has made a significant and positive impact on the lives of children in the United States and in other parts of the world. Through generous support, proceeds of the Luncheon have allowed the Society to donate over $3 million to children dealing with life-threatening illness, including cancer, juvenile diabetes, kidney and liver ailments, heart disease, etc. as well as innovative research programs and facilities that offer care, treatment and cures. Our Saint George Philoptochos Chapter 1021 has made a $5,000 Sponsorship Donation.

Epiphany House provides transitional housing and a continuum of health care and social services. At Christmas time, Philoptochos donates Christmas gifts to the woman and children to help make their Christmas a little brighter. This past Christmas the woman received robes and socks and the children received warm winter jackets, pajamas and a toy. This year, after a few years off, Philoptochos will bring back the Wreath and Grave Blanket Community Service Project. We hope to have the support of our GOYANS and their advisors to assist in placing the grave blankets at our Cemetery for those parishioners who are unable to do so. Watch for the flier, orders will be taken October 26 th through November 17 th. Order pick up will be on Sunday, November 26 th following Divine Liturgy. Philoptochos sponsors a Vasilopita Reception for the Saint George Community to welcome in the New Year. This is always a beautiful event following Liturgy when the community comes together to share in the Birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. Philoptochos sponsors the Alice Nicas and Mary Papageorge Scholarship in the amount of $2,000 to a Saint George college student in need. This scholarship was named in memory of these two lifelong members of St. George Philoptochos and their extensive service and dedication to our Mission. Please RSVP: Teri Lalli LalliPTDS@comcast.net This classic of world spiritual literature is the firsthand account of a pilgrim's journey as he endeavors to live out Saint Paul's instruction to "pray without ceasing." The narrator, an unnamed nineteenthcentury peasant, sets out on his pilgrimage with nothing but a Bible, a rosary, and some dried bread. As he walks, he recites the Jesus prayer ("Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me") a prayer that is said to quiet anxiety and fill the heart with love for all creation. With this prayer constantly on his lips, the pilgrim undergoes a profound spiritual education. Both The Way of a Pilgrim and The Pilgrim Continues His Way remind us that we are all pilgrims on a journey to God. - Father Thomas Hopko

13 Aug. /Sept. /Oct. 2017, Vol. 17/Issue 4 THE BEACON Page 13 A MESSAGE FROM OUR GREEK SCHOOL DIRECTOR Dear Parents/Guardians, My name is Mrs.Vasiliki Nikolettos and I am proud to announce that I will be the new Greek School Principal this year. I would like to send my humble greetings and salutations to all the very special families I will have the privilege to meet and work with throughout the school year. I am truly looking forward to an exciting year with your children. It is my wish to provide all students with an educationally challenging, yet fun, experience. Furthermore, I am fluent in both English and Greek, as I was born and raised in NJ. My parents are both Greek and raised me with all the Greek morals/beliefs and traditions. After graduating High school, I moved to Greece with my family, where I continued my studies in Athens, Greece and started my teaching career. I have been teaching for the past 23 years and I feel truly blessed to continue teaching in the States. I am happily married and have a 10 year old son, which also speaks Greek fluently and is in Greek School. My husband was a nurse and teacher in Greece and we worked side by side teaching at our own family owned private school. While in Greece, I taught English and Greek as a second language for 21 yrs. to students of all ages (4-18 yrs. old) and adult/corporate classes. Due to the experience in which I have acquired throughout my Principal/Teaching career, I am certain we will have a successful school year with lots of hard work and loads of fun. Teaching the Hellenic/Greek language, along with incorporating in our lessons, the teachings of religion, history and of the rich customs and traditions of Hellas/Greece are also some important characteristics that will be present in all our classes. We must keep the Greek heritage alive and pass down these gifts of knowledge down to our children. I have extremely high expectations for all my students and will work very hard with them in order to achieve our goals for this year s Greek School curriculum. Finally, I would like to inform everyone that one of my most important goals this year is to keep the lines of communication open with parents at all times in order to answer all your questions and give you the proper support and aid necessary to create and maintain a perfect, fun learning environment and positive experience for our precious children. Our children are our gems and mean the world to us. This is why it is important for us all to work together hand in hand as a team to supply them with the correct learning tools and continuous guidance from both the parents and educators. I wish you all a happy and safe SUMMER! I look forward to starting our Greek School year and meeting all the parents and students. God Bless and be well. For those parents who wish to contact me, please me at vickykn76@gmail.com. Kind regards, Mrs. Vasiliki Nikolettos

18 Page 18 THE BEACON Aug. /Sept. /Oct. 2017, Vol. 17/Issue 4 FATHER OF THE YEAR Nick Kosmas This year our St. George Church is proud to honor as Father of the Year a man that has devoted his entire life to our St. George community and as we are preparing for our festival this man exemplifies the devoted servant to our St. George Church with his hard work and dedication on making our Festival the special event that it is. Often you will see our Father Year and his wife dedicating long hours during the week setting up for various events including Church dances, our Feast days and our festival just to name a few.this year we are proud to honor Nick Kosmas as Father of The Year, Nick both talks the talk and walks the walk. He is a devoted Steward endlessly offering his Time, Talents & Treasures. Nick was born on May 17 in Detroit, Michigan to Vickie (Apostolou) and Paul Kosmas (both now with the Lord). His brother Terry was born 6 years later. Nick graduated from HS in 1966 and went on to Ferris State College in Big Rapids, Michigan. Nick was drafted into the military while in college and was deployed for about a year to the Vietnam War. While in Viet Nam, his fellow soldiers called him the King of the Greek Cheese because his father and his uncle would send him care packages that included Greek Cheese. While growing up Nick attended Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in East Detroit where he was tonsured as an acolyte by the late His Eminence Archbishop Iakovos. He also served as a Sunday School teacher while still in high school. In High School, he participated in the marching band as the Drum Major, and then he used to change under the bleachers during games to become a Cheerleader. Talk about multi-talented!!! He was the life of the party! After Vietnam, he returned to Detroit and then moved to NJ (because his parents had since moved here). Nick worked for his Aunt Sophie Batsis in her restaurant in Red Bank. He later worked in a variety of restaurants including the Cypress Inn in Wanamassa. One night while at a bar he saw this Blond Bomb Shell and he said to himself I am going to marry her and he married Deidra in June, They raised two sons, Jason (married to Carolyn) and Christopher (married to Jenn). Jason and Carolyn live in Austin, TX, and have three daughters, Lola, Ruby and Ivy. Chris and Jenn live in Middletown, NJ, and have a son Nico. Nick and Deirdre really enjoy spending time with their grandchildren. Nick was part owner with his family of the Howard Johnson s Restaurant in Spring Lake and later Perkins Family Restaurant in Middletown. He later worked at various places including, The Wiz in Brick, and he is currently employed by Warshauer Electric in Tinton Falls. Nick has truly been an asset to our St. George Church. He offered his time as a Sunday School teacher as well as a GOYA Advisor and Coach. He has served as a Parish Council member for many years, and works alongside his wife Deirdre decorating the sanctuary for our many feast days. Their kouvouklion for our annual Epitaphios Thrinos service always brings a sense of awe to our parishioners. Thank you Nick for your many years of service. Many more!!!

19 Aug. /Sept. /Oct. 2017, Vol. 17/Issue 4 THE BEACON Page 19 MOTHER OF THE YEAR - Gayle Pappaylion Billows The Philoptochos Society is proud to honor Gayle Billows as our Mother of the Year for She is truly the type of woman that exemplifies Philoptochos: caring, intelligent, and service-oriented for all people. Gayle and her husband, Nick, reside in Wayside, NJ. They raised three boys, Gregory, John and Peter, who are married and have children. Gregory and his wife, Lori, live in Oakhurst and have two children, Adrienne and Nicholas; John and his wife, Laurie, reside in Pennsylvania and have three children, Olivia, Evelyn, and Henry; and Peter and his wife, Keri, reside in Cranford, NJ and have three girls, Victoria, Kate and Ellie. Gayle is the daughter of the late Anthony and Evelyn Pappaylion. She has one brother, Arthur and sister-in-law Tasi of Wayside, NJ, two nieces, Sophia and Elayna, and three great nieces, Nicole, Corinne and Cassandra. Gayle has been a dedicated, tireless worker for Philoptochos overseeing all committees. She served as President from Gayle has worked in various capacities on the Executive Board for over 30 years. In addition to working full time in real estate since 1987, she has worked for every organization in our community: GOYA, Choir, P.T.O., Sunday school and the Altar Boys Guild. One of her accomplishments was the pastry chairperson for our St. George Festival before we moved to Ocean Township. Gayle faithfully serves on the committee for Social Services for Philoptochos, which is the Heart of our Association. She has chaired our Fall Luncheon, bake sales, and most recently, alongside her husband, Nick and son Gregory, at YiaYia s Cuzina at our Jersey Shore Greek Festival. Every Holy Thursday, Gayle can be found in the kitchen dyeing the red eggs that the community receives. Her love and respect for people is what drives her personality, life and her desire to help those less fortunate. Gayle met her husband Nick in the summer of When Nick asked her to marry him, she was uncertain. She thought about it for a few minutes then said, Well, I guess so. Almost 47 years, 3 sons, 3 beautiful daughters-in-law, and 8 grandchildren later, she seems to have guessed right! Gayle has a favorite tradition where she makes gingerbread houses from scratch each year and decorates them with her grandchildren and grandnieces every Christmas. I am also told that she has a sweet tooth and can frequently be found visiting the Caramel Shop.

21 Aug. /Sept. /Oct. 2017, Vol. 17/Issue 4 THE BEACON Page 21 REMEMBERING STEPHEN G. PAPPAYLIOU April 13, February 13, 2017 By Athena Loesch Stephen G. Pappayliou was a lifelong and devoted Parishioner of our St. George Church. In fact, his father, George Pappayliou, was the Godfather of our beloved church and his love of Orthodoxy was passed down to his son Stephen. Stephen or as most of us knew him as Steve, was born in Asbury Park, grew up in Allenhurst and attended the Asbury Park public schools. He was an athlete and was captain of the Asbury Park Blue Bishop Football Team graduating from Asbury Park High School early in 1943 to join the United States Navy where he proudly served for the duration of the Second World War. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1949 with a bachelor s degree in Business. After graduation, he worked in the family business, the Goodie Tea Shoppe, on the boardwalk in Asbury Park, before marrying his beloved wife, Despina, in They had a beautiful life together for 52 years before her passing and; together they raised three children, George, Ted and Connie. Steve also had the good fortune of having six beautiful grandchildren. Steve was a very ambitious husband and father working for almost 50 years as a car salesman for Park Chevrolet and for over 30 years he owned and operated the Sampler Inn in Ocean Grove together with his brother-in-law, Bill Apostolos. After his retirement, he served as a councilman in his hometown of Interlaken. In addition to his professional career, he was also a Free and Accepted Mason and a member of the Order of AHEPA. He was an avid golfer and fisherman and he especially loved attending and cheering for his Grandchildren at their many athletic events. He was always an active member of our St. George and he served on our Parish Council. Steve however, is most notably remembered in the St. George community for the 40 years he served as President of our St. George Cemetery Association on West Bangs Avenue in Neptune, NJ. This is one of only three Greek Orthodox cemeteries that exist on the East Coast. He worked diligently to ensure that our departed loved ones were in a peaceful and beautiful final resting place. He was a hard working individual and frequently could be found at the Cemetery checking to see what needed to be done in the way of landscaping, clearing of brush, planting of trees and shrubs, pruning and even the power washing of stained monuments. He ensured our Cemetery was a beautiful place to come and pray for our deceased family members and friends. He was the man responsible for having the water turned on and off in the spring and fall, for the water line maintenance, for dumpster pick-ups, and for the lawn and grounds maintenance. For our annual Memorial Day services, he contacted the Bradley Beach American Legion for their annual placement of American flags at the gravesites of our Community s veterans. He also contacted the Neptune High School to provide an Honor Guard and a bugler to play Taps during these services. He coordinated with the GOYA to have a Cemetery clean-up day removing flowers, wreaths and debris from the gravesites prior to Christmas and Pascha.Steve initiated many projects to maintain, beautify and expand our Cemetery. He instituted the removal of brush, trees and bushes and initiated the resealing/paving of the circular driveway. Steve had a tremendous passion for our Cemetery. He sold the cemetery plots, knew each and every available gravesite and coordinated with the funeral homes. Although he spent many winters in Florida, while there, he worked remotely coordinating any funeral requirements needed. His devotion and untiring efforts lessened the burden for us during the loss of our loved ones. He displayed a kindness and respect for our departed loved ones as if they were his own family. Steve now rests in the place he loved and nurtured for so many years. If you visit our Cemetery, take a moment to stop by Steve s gravesite and say a small prayer for him. Steve was a very special man and he will always be remembered with our love and admiration. St. George Community extends its heartfelt sympathy to the family of Stephen G. Pappayliou. May he rest in peace, may his memory be eternal. Eonia tou e mnimi.
