1 St. George Greek Orthodox Church Volume 17, Issue 4 November/December 2017 The Bi-Monthly Newsletter of St. George Greek Orthodox Church A Message from our Proistamenos CHRISTMAS, CHRIST S DAY! +Father Andrew Eugenis As the years pass by, I find it harder and harder to keep Christ in Christmas. Once Thanksgiving ends we will soon begin to see beautiful lights, candles, snowflakes that decorate our malls and city streets. People will adorn their homes with the colors of red and green, put wreaths and candles and dazzling lights in their windows. These decorations even appear in our schools and businesses. It s the Christmas season! As my children were growing up, I saw and read the stories and colorings they would bring home from school each year. However, throughout the years I never saw any mention whatsoever about Jesus or His Birth in all of their works. It saddens me that today when you ask youngsters what Christmas is about, you would be amazed at their response! Most children think Christmas is more about presents than about Christ. And why shouldn t they? There is no mention of Christ in the schools or malls anymore. Most townships stopped putting up manger scenes as not to offend anyone. What about when you go shopping: what happened to Merry Christmas, that s right, I forgot it s Happy Holiday now. As I think about it more and more, I too began to realize that Christmas really is only about presents. So, if Christmas is only about presents, then what kind of presents are we talking about? I would like to share a few stories about Christmas and presents with you to better understand my point of view: It s about presents. Christmas truly really is about presents It s about a father who scolded his three-year-old daughter for wasting a full roll of gold wrapping paper. Since money was tight, he became furious when his little daughter tried to decorate a box with the wrapping paper and put it under the Christmas tree. Yet, on Christmas day, the little girl brought the gift wrapped in gold paper to her father and said, "This is for you, Daddy." When he saw the gift, he was embarrassed by his earlier reaction, but his anger flared up again as he unwrapped the gift, opened the box, and found it empty. "Don t you know when you give someone a present, there s supposed to be something inside of it?" he shouted. With tears in her eyes, the little girl looked up at him and said, "Daddy, it s not empty. I blew kisses into the box and put them in there for you." Her father then smiled, put his arms around his little girl, and begged her forgiveness and kept that gold box by his bed for years so that whenever he was discouraged he would take out a kiss and remember the love of his little daughter who put it there. The gift of love! 3 November/December 2017, Vol. 17/Issue 5 THE BEACON Page 3 A Message from our Parish Council President \ We just celebrated the start of a new ecclesiastical year schools have reopened and the business of life and the Church comes out of vacation mode. We at St. George have a very busy period coming up. Our Greek School and Sunday Schools programs have resumed. With regard to Greek School, while we have a slight drop off in Greek School enrollments, this year will be a time to strengthen the fundamentals of the program to create a stronger, more vibrant educational and cultural experience for our youth. The same can be said for our Sunday School, where we hope to deliver a rich religious experience for the children of our community. The Parish Council has been hard at work to make sure our complex stays in good shape and remains a facility we can continue to be very proud of. We work to maintain our property - repairs have been made to the grounds and plans are in development to fix the retention basin and erect a proper storage building. On October 15 th we had our Fall Parish Assembly meeting where we reviewed all the current and future projects of our parish life. Thank you to all our ministry leaders for their contributions to our meeting and our parish life. Thank you also to all those who attended the Assembly and took an active part in the decision making of our parish. In addition to reviewing our Stewardship and Treasurers Reports, we also reviewed our 2018 budget see pages 14 & 15. This coming month, on Sunday, November 19, we will have our annual Stewardship Sunday. We ask our community to make their financial pledge for 2018 by filling out the Stewardship Commitment form and placing in the second tray that Sunday in church. There s no need for payment on that day, just a commitment. We also ask that everyone complete their 2017 Stewardship commitment if they haven t already before the end of the year. The Church office can provide you with information about your pledge and payment status. It takes all of us together as one St. George family, to build and grow our parish. Finally, I want to continue to remind everyone of our upcoming Iconography Project and ask that you please make every effort to financially support the project. Consider sponsoring an icon either alone, or with family and friends - in memory a loved one. If you cannot donate an individual icon, w please consider making a donation to our Community Icon the 12 Prophets. Thank you all for your support of St. George. We could not continue to thrive and grow if not for the contributions of each and every one of our stewards. 16 Page 16 THE BEACON November/December 2017, Vol. 17/Issue 5 * Class Time: Immediately following Holy Communion until 11:40am Welcome to the Sunday School year! As you can see from the picture we are off to a great start! I would like to take this opportunity to thank not only Father Andrew and the dedicated teachers for sharing their love of the faith, but also to all the parents who are bringing their children every week to learn about the love and life of Christ. We have approximately 80 students registered and look forward to many more joining us throughout the course of the year. If you still have not officially registered your child, please see their teacher or Kristen for a form (or take one from the Sunday School Bulletin Board) and return it to the main office. We are also always looking for Sunday School volunteers, both as occasional aides and substitutes. Please contact Kristen if you are interested. Upcoming dates to remember: November 12: Godparent Sunday and Teaching Liturgy. Please invite your child s Godparent to join us in the Sunday School classrooms. December 23 (Saturday, 10AM): Practice in the Church for the Nativity Pageant December 24: Nativity Pageant in the Church Any questions, please contact Kristen Cline: kristen.et.cline@gmail.com and put SUNDAY SCHOOL in the subject (Continued from page 1) It s about presents. Christmas truly really is about presents It s about a contest held to find the most caring child. The winner was a four-year-old boy whose next-door neighbor was an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife. Upon seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the gentleman s yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there. When his mother asked the little boy what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy said, "Nothing I just helped him cry." The gift of consolation! It s about presents. Christmas truly really is about presents It s about a four-year-old who went to the pediatrician for a checkup. As the doctor looked down her ears with an otoscope, he asked, "Do you think I ll find Big Bird in here?" The little girl stayed silent. Next, the doctor took a tongue depressor and looked down her throat. He asked, "Do you think I ll find the Cookie Monster down there?" Again, the little girl was silent. Then the doctor put a stethoscope to her chest. As he listened to her heartbeat, he asked, "Do you think I ll hear Barney in here?" Oh no! the little girl replied. "Jesus is in my heart." The gift of faith. It s about presents. Christmas truly really is about presents It s about God, who loved each one of us so much that he gave us his only begotten Son, Jesus Christ so that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. The ultimate gift! It s all about presents. Christmas really is about presents But it s not about the presents we give that we bought at the local Toys R Us, or the local department store. It s not about the giving of money; Christmas is not about a holiday season. Rather, Christmas is about the gift of giving of ourselves, giving of our time and talents so that we might touch the life of another. The reason why we give of ourselves is because we commemorate the gift God gave us His only Son! So what type of gift will you give this Christmas? Will it be the gift of love by telling family and friends how special they are to you; the gift of consolation, remembering those who have no one else to remember them, or visiting those who have no one to visit them; bringing the gift of laughter to those who are in sorrow, or imparting the gift of faith, by keeping Jesus Christ in Christmas. Let us always remember that Christmas is when we celebrate the day salvation was born to all of humanity! God Bless you and Merry Christmas

17 November/December 2017, Vol. 17/Issue 5 THE BEACON Page 17 We would like welcome everyone, new and old, to the GOYA year. Not too long ago, we were entering GOYA for the first time, and now we are seniors in our last year participating in this program. GOYA has helped us create friendships that never would have happened had we not been involved. Our aim for this year is to integrate new and returning members and make memories with our GOYA family one last time. To start off, the annual kickoff party was held at the Scheidt house. Here, we had a small meeting, met new faces, talked with old friends, and of course, kicked off the GOYA season! Not long after that, Anne Papageorge, Costas Demetriades, Joan Scheidt (who retrieved the cross for the Senior Girls), and John Paragioudakis dove for the cross during the annual Blessing of the Waters on the Asbury Park boardwalk. Shortly after, basketball, volleyball, and Greek dance practices started. The purpose of these activities is to give GOYA members bonding time, while doing something that they enjoy. Mr. and Miss GOYA was also a major event in the first month of GOYA, where Aleka Damiano (came in 1 st runner up) and Antonis Krousos represented our church. Looking into the future, our GOYA has a lot in store. As usual, we will be doing our Christmas morning gift delivery in partnership to The Giving Tree. We will also be making sandwiches for the homeless in Newark, which will be an eye opening event. A big part of GOYA is giving back, so that is what we strive for. Though GOYA is a lot of service, we also try to have fun. Dances happen almost every month and they are great for meeting GOYANs from other churches. We also have two lock-ins during the year, as well as the annual ski trip to Woodloch Pines, Pennsylvania. With all of this in mind, we look forward to having a fun, safe, and memorable GOYA year. None of this could be possible without our advisors, families, and the 74 members of the St. George GOYA. With Love, Top: GOYA members at Kick-Off Party. Edison Chapter, 287 Ocean, NJ By: Arthur Pappaylion, Chapter President During this summer our AHEPA chapter officers were busy organizing events for the New Year which - started in September. On August 19, through the efforts and supervision of Brother James Petrantis, our chapter enjoyed a Day at the Races at Monmouth Park in Oceanport (photos below). We had 50 members of our community participate in this activity and a fun time was had by all. Our chapter sponsored a race and offered the winning jockey a trophy in the winner s circle. This event was so well received by everyone that we are planning to have another Day at the Races sometime next spring. On October 9 th, at 7:30PM our chapter initiated 10 new members into the Order of AHEPA. The District Officers of New Jersey will be in attendance. Presiding over the initiation will be the new District Governor Zenon Christodoulou. Pictured left: Candidates initiated into AHEPA on October 9th by the District Lodge.
