1 St. George Greek Orthodox Church 1033 West Park Avenue, Ocean, NJ Beacon of Orthodoxy & Hellenism At the New Jersey Shore Volume 13, Issue 6 From our Priest, Father Andrew July & August 2013 Praying for our departed loved ones! For many of us who are cradle orthodox, praying for our departed loved ones is normal and has always been in our faith. Yet, often as a priest, nonorthodox ask me, why we need to pray for the deceased? The practice of praying for those who have taken their repose in the Lord is an ancient one. From the time of the Israelites onto the Apostles, the early Christians have always believed that those who have fallen asleep are not dead but still alive in Christ Jesus! The origins of a memorial are found in Scripture, both in the Old and New Testaments. The Israelites prayed to God to forgive the sins of their fathers who had died (Neh. 9:2). When on the garments of the dead solders they found pagan amulets, considered a great sin for an Israelite, the people prayed to God for their souls that He may forgive them (II Macc. 12:40-42). St. Paul prayed for the departed Onesiphoros that the Lord grant mercy to him (II Tim. 1:18). Also whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord s (Rom. 14:8) When a person dies, the body is returned to the earth from which it was formed. However, the soul, which God gives the body at conception, lives on for all of eternity. Therefore, in its very essence, prayer for the dead is a proclamation of Christ and what he has offered to us all, life eternal! This is the major reoccurring theme for the Saturday of the Souls that is celebrated four times a year; three at the beginning of Lent, one on the Saturday before Lent begins and then the following two Saturdays of Lent. The forth is celebrated on the Saturday before Pentecost. The Church has specifically prescribed these Saturdays for us, the living, to remember our loved ones who have passed on and to pray that the Lord accept them into His heavenly kingdom emphasizing the death and resurrection of our Lord. The death of a loved one brings separation, which is sorrowful and tragic. Unfortunately, this is a reality of the fallen world in which we live and no one can escape this occurrence. When death happens, the bereaved focus their energy and thoughts on the deceased in order to maintain some type of connection. For weeks, months and even years the bereaved will think of and remember their beloved and how the were involved in their life. The Church understands that there exists a need for us to have a continued connection with a departed loved one. Hence, we remember them in all facets of our life, including prayer. Our prayers for the dead do not merely maintain a link for use but are also a means of intercession. While the prayers of the Church help to comfort us in our moment of loss and frailty they also become a powerful tool of intercession for the departed. Simply stated, the prayers heard during the Saturday of the Souls are for both the living and the dead. One can understand this by reading the account of the rich man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31). For all those who have left this phase of life and have entered into the eternal phase of life; May their memories be eternal! +Fr. 3 Volume 13 Issue 7 3 A Message from our Parish Council President Spiro P. Pappas: All I can say is.opa BRAVO and What a great community we have at St. George!!! We all worked together over the many, many hours it took to organize and execute our very successful Jersey Shore Greek Festival. Never underestimate the power of a family of Christ-centered volunteers working together for the love of St. George! God was certainly smiling on us. He gave us a perfect day on Saturday and the sporadic rains on Friday and Sunday just gave us a welcomed break!!! So much gratitude goes to Father Andrew for his steady leadership and to our Chairman George Moutis for his skill, knowledge, persistence and above all faith that we could do this in such a short time and do it so beautifully. My heartfelt thanks to our innumerable committee chairs and volunteers who worked tirelessly for weeks. I was told by many attendees how impressed they were by the caliber of our Festival. I am proud of my St. George family. All the committee heads went above and beyond in organizing, recruiting, worrying and working to bring out the many AMAZING volunteers to actually get the job done. Wherever you looked you saw a sea of blue shirts! Many of our guests said that everyone was so helpful and kind. That s what a Christian community is!!!. Now that we cleaned the site and enjoyed a well-deserved party let s not forget that St. George needs every single one of us to share their Time Talent and Treasure to accomplish great things. But above all share your love and devotion to Christ with each other and. ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE!!!!! ENJOY YOUR SUMMER.See you every Sunday!!!

4 4 Volume 13 Issue 7 St. George Church ~ Spirit of Stewardship Chosen and Appointed by God to Go and Bear Fruit Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. (John 15:2) The Stewardship Committee is often asked about the how to of Stewardship. A common question is, How do I pay my stewardship commitment after I have submitted my commitment form? There are a number ways: 1) mail your weekly, monthly, quarterly or annual check to the Church; 2) pick up a Stewardship envelope in the Narthex, insert your commitment (be sure to include your name and Stewardship in the memo of your check) and leave the envelope at the Pangari or drop it into the tray that is passed during Divine Liturgy; or 3) arrange to have the Church charge your credit card weekly, monthly, quarterly or annually. Our parish would like everyone to become a Steward in Good Standing and participate in the life of the church. There are many ways in our very active community. And we re coming up with even more each day. What can you bring to the table? How can you become a part of our St. George family? Our first festival in our new complex saw many people who had not participated in the past. Yet they came to help and contribute to its success, and in doing so, they made friends and became a part of our St. George family. Time + Talent + Treasure = Stewardship Be a good Steward. We are grateful to all the Stewards of St. George. 8 8 Volume 13 Issue 7 GOYA News Another year has ended for our goyans and some will be moving on to college while others to careers. We want to wish our graduating seniors great success in all of their future endeavors and may God be with them always -Nicole Alicakos, Kassiani Chrysanthopoulos, Matthew Chrystal (Joe Flacco), Kristina Disakias, Jordan Eugenis, James Floros, Ariana Giannopoulos, Angela Kapsaskis, Magdalini Kostidakis, Hope Lopresti, and Alexandra Thomas. You will always be in our hearts and will be welcomed back anytime. The goyans enjoyed a great year starting with the Kick-off party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Giannopoulos and our first ever Kick-off Dance that we hosted for over 400 goyans of the Metropolis. We also enjoyed attending different dances that the other communities hosted. We held different fund raisers from car washes, souvlaki and candy sales to child care services. We participated in basketball and volleyball games, Mr. and Miss GOYA pageant, Folk Dance Festival, Sights and Sounds, Soccer Olympics, Indoor Olympics, and Outdoor Olympics. We helped our community by cleaning the St. George Cemetery in the fall and spring and bringing Christmas cheer by caroling to our parishioners. We helped other communities by making and delivering sandwiches for the Bridges Program, collecting and distributing Christmas gifts to the needy and raising money and awareness for the Hungary in the 30 hour Famine. We also held lock-ins to bring spirituality and fellowship to the goyans and a two day winter retreat at Woodlock in Pennsylvania. After reading about the exciting year that we just had, I hope that those who are reading this article and have children starting 7 th grade in the fall (through 12 th grade) will have their children join Goya. It is never too late to join. Please visit the St. George website and find GOYA under the ministries for application, information and upcoming events. With the guidance of our spiritual Father Andrew and the advisers George Moutis, George Costidis and Maria Conery, we welcome you to join in this exciting ministry for our youth.
