5 Three Minute Liturgical Catechesis Arcle 20 If there is any prayer that could be called the model Chrisan prayer, it would surely be the Our Father. We call it the Lord's Prayer, because it was given by Jesus to the disciples when they asked him to teach them how to pray. This is a prayer that has been used by Chrisans ever since, oen several mes a day. Early Chrisan writers speak of praying the Lord's Prayer every morning, at midday and every night. It has been the constant companion of Chrisans for two thousand years. Since the early centuries of the Church's history, this prayer has also been used as part of our immediate preparaon for receiving Communion. There are several aspects of the prayer that make it parcularly appropriate for this part of the Mass. First, of course, is the fact that this prayer prays for our daily bread. While this means more than just the Eucharist, it naturally calls to mind the Lord's gi of his body and blood as our food and drink. Second, it speaks of the forgiveness that enables the community to be reconciled with one another just as we are reconciled with God. Third, this prayer is addressed to Our Father, reminding us that we are one family in Christ as we come to share at the table of the Lord. When this prayer first became part of the Mass, it was commonly said aer the breaking of the bread. Near the beginning of the seventh century, Pope St. Gregory the Great moved it to its current posion because he saw it as closely linked to the Eucharisc Prayer. It echoes the concerns of the Eucharisc Prayer that God be praised, that God's kingdom might come, and that God's will be done on earth as in heaven. Making this prayer our own can be a way of expressing some of the implicaons of our Amen to the Eucharisc Prayer. Some people have become accustomed to holding hands during this prayer to express our unity. Others have learned to raise their hands in prayer. Neither gesture is prescribed in the official books, nor is either forbidden. Perhaps one of these locally developing trends will lead someday to a formal rubric in the liturgy. The final peon of the prayer has long been expanded to ask for peace. This expansion, called the embolism, is followed by the acclamaon For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours The Byzanne Rite, one of the Eastern rites of the Church, normally concludes the Lord's Prayer with this acclamaon, as do many of our brothers and sisters in other Chrisan churches. It seems to have been added to the prayer originally so that it would end on a more posive note than deliver us from evil. We say this prayer so oen that it is good for us now and then to make a conscious effort to think about what we are saying. It is a prayer that challenges us to work for the things we pray forto remember that we are one family, to make God's name holy, to work for the kingdom, to do God's will, to share our daily bread, to forgive as we are forgiven and to struggle against evil. It is a good prayer to pray several mes a day. A GREAT FALL EVENT MAACWMilwaukee Area Christian Women will be having a day of prayer, worship and fellowship on Thursday, September 21 at St. John ssons of Zebedee in Byron from 9:00 a.m. To 2:30 p.m. Mass is also included. Everyone is more than welcome to join us. Please call Barb to register, , or register Thursday morning, between 8:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. Hope to see you there.

6 20 th Sunday of Ordinary Time One of our modern aflictions which is a hazard not only to our mental and physical health, but especially to our spiritual health, is the constant and perpetual activity that seems to ill so many of our lives. There never seems to be a lack of things to do. Busyness has become the mark of life in our time. And while we do not want to become is lazy and nonproductive, there is a danger in not being able to stop and relect on our lives. At times we move through life in such a distracted way that we do not even take the time and rest to wonder if any of the things we thing, say, or do are worth thinking, saying, doing. We simply go along with the many musts and ought s that have been handed to us. The danger is immense. It is the danger of losing ourselves, of becoming straw and shallow people, concerned only with outward appearances, with owning things, with being well thought of. Elijah searches for God in a strong wind, in the earthquake and in the ire, and still does not ind God. It is only when a gentle breeze passes by that Elijah steps to the entrance of the cave and inds God in the sound of sheer silence. Each of us must be convinced of the need to step out of the fast lowing river of our life, and sit quietly on the bank, watching the river go by, and wondering what it is all about. We need to look at ourselves, our wives and husbands, our children and friends, through eyes that are not distracted by the compulsive activity that seems to take so much of our energy. Once we have convinced ourselves of the need to hear the sound of sheer silence, then we will ind a way to solitude and prayer. PeaceFr. Michael There have been many times that I have been asked as a priest, What should I do to develop a relationship with the Lord? My question in return is, Tell me what you re doing now. Well, I go to Church sometimes, they respond, and I pray when I can. Well, it is simple. First, go to Church everysunday. It s a priority; no ifs, ands, or buts. You must go to Church everysundaywithout fail. When you are insundaymass, don t pray for yourself; pray for the needs of others. If they are married, I tell them to pray for their spouse, their children, coworkers and friends. Second, go to confession. Don t try to go go! Do it. Make a good examination of conscience. Any priest worthy of his priesthood would be glad to assist. If not, it tells you something about the priest; he will not be your spiritual guide. Then, continue to make confession a regularlyscheduled occurrence. I would suggest every other month to start. You will ind the more you receive the grace of reconciliation, the greater your awareness of the need in your life for healing. Sin is a lot more prevalent than we care to imagine. If you think, I don t have that many sins, think about the fact that St. (Mother) Teresa of Calcutta went to confession every week. How many of us would claim that we are in less need of confession than Mother Teresa? Third, pray ive minutes every day at a set time in the morning and evening. Take last Sunday s Gospel or thecoming Sunday sgospel, select a few themes and meditate on them. (If you want something helpful and enjoyable, listen totwo Guys and a Gospel.) If you are more adventurous, try saying the rosary, or at least a decade of the rosary, every day. When I offer people these suggestions, I am often surprised that people will respond. It sounds too simple; maybe I should go to an ashram, a sweat lodge or a mountain hermitage. Of course, my response is simply that maybe you should try living your faith and practicing the basics. We all love the exotic. Like Naaman, we want the spectacular, or are told that we must experience the extraordinary. But God places at our disposal the simple elements for our spiritual life. Are you serious about healing? Are you serious about developing a relationship with God? He s waiting for you to take your faith seriously. Remember, God is not in the earthquake, the wind or the ire, but instead, in the gentle whisper that directs us to LOVE ONE ANOTHER. We Are One, Most Reverend Jerome E. Listecki
