5 29th Sunday of Ordinary Time When Jesus said, repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God, he was not telling us that we should be dividing up our lives. These words of Jesus do not solve the problem of Church and state. They don t create an artiicial separation in our livesone part of us obeying the government and another part obeying God. When Jesus asks for a coin, he also asks, Whose head is this, and whose title? The coin, of course, bears Caesar s head, and belongs to Caesar. Humans, on the other hand bear the image of God. They belong to God. Humans bear God s image, and wherever they live and operatewhether in the social, economic, political, or religious realmthey belong to God. Their primary loyalties are always to God. We don t change our deepest convictions when we leave the church building and enter city hall. In those situations in which governments start acting as if they were God, we owe no obedience or loyalty to them. Just exactly when that happens is not always clear, but in some situations it is very clear. Whenever governments act as if they, and not God, have authority over life and death, then the government is clearly wrong. When the ruling powers say that it is right to kill the unborn, take the lives of the elderly, put prisoners to death, then we no longer owe allegiance to such government in those matters. Whenever people are not treated with the dignity, which they possess as children of God, we need to be a voice crying for justice. This is so because in all of these cases the ruling powers are denying that each human person is created in the image and likeness of God. Peace PAPER DRIVE St. Mary s Parish will no longer have a Paper Drive in the Fall and Spring. Brian from Southwest Auto Iron & Metal in Lomira, located on the corner of Water and Main Streets, will set up an account for St. Mary s. You can take your papers to his recycling business and he will give the credit to St. Mary s. PERPETUAL CARE FUND St. Mary s Cemetery needs your help! The only money we receive right now is from the sale of lots. Over the years that balance has accumulated to a savings of approximately $30,000. With these funds, we have to maintain upkeep of the grounds, lawn mowing, snow removal and tree removal. We split the mowing and snow removal with the St. Mary s Parish 60/40. But with costs going up over our budget the last few years, that money is going out much faster than it is coming in. So the Cemetery committee would like to build up a Perpetual Care Fund. If we could get enough money in it, it would be able to sustain the upkeep of the grounds on interest alone, therefore insuring our grandparents, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters and children s plots. But we need your help to have this taken care of for years to come. Please help us get this started and consider a substantial donation to get us at a sustainable amount for the care of our families deceased members who are gone but count on us to look after their plots. Please give a serious consideration to a gift towards our Perpetual Care Fund. Thank you and God Bless, St. Mary s Cemetery Committee
