Matthew 14:22-33 Aug. 26 Keep Calm and Carry On Acts 27: How A Garden Grows Last year was my first try at vegetable gardening in many years. Between my decidedly rusty gardening skills and the lack of time to properly attend to outdoor chores, last year s garden wasn t exactly anything to write home about. But I limped along and harvested some veggies and herbs. I m happy to report that this year s garden is getting along much better - my schedule now allows me time to go out in the morning to weed, water and fertilize. So I could, I suppose, take some credit for growing a much better-looking vegetable patch. But the truth is that this garden has been very much a community effort. A friend of our congregation gave me an incredible ordination gift and prepared the bed, digging up tons of quack grass and other weeds, giving me some tile to protect the tender young pepper and tomato plants (some of which came from her.) Several people gave me lovely bedding plants and I used bean seeds shared with me by a parishioner. And maybe most special of all, my mother, daughter and granddaughter were all on hand to plant the bed. My sister also gave me a wonderful ordination gift a metal plaque engraved with a little poem that was in my grandmother s perennial bed for as long as I can remember. What a joy to place this memory in the corner among the herbs! I call this my Five Generation garden, blessed by the hands and hearts of my grandmother, mother, daughter and granddaughter. Sometimes as I work in my office, I think about the generations that have faithfully helped to grow this congregation of faith. We continue to do the hard work of tending to this place, each generation bringing unique gifts wisdom and enthusiasm, strength and perseverance, encouragement and imagination. We are blessed by the hands and hearts of all those who have faithfully and lovingly served here in the past. And, of course, we are guided and sustained by the God who mysteriously and graciously makes all good things grow. Your Sister In the Garden, Pastor Christie

3 VOLUME 1, ISSUE 8 PAGE 3 UNITED METHODIST WOMEN On Thursday, July 12th the Geneseo UMW hosted over 50 people from area churches and the community to a salad luncheon. We were inspired by our speaker Hannah Ackerman a 17 yr. old from Cedar Falls, who gave a touching presentation through the eyes of Mrs. Alleta Sullivan (mother of the Five Sullivan Brothers) about their lives and events leading up to their tragic loss in WWII. We thank all those who helped to make this Guest Day a success and enjoyable event at our church. PASTOR CHRISTIES S OFFICE HOURS Since I ve completed my ordination requirements, I m readjusting my office schedule. I will generally be in the office Monday through Saturday morning (unless I need to be at an appointment or meeting), Tuesday afternoons and Wednesday evenings. The best way to reach me is either through the church office or on my cell phone (319) I will be away from the office Saturday afternoons/ evenings and Sunday afternoons/evenings except in pastoral emergencies or by previous appointment. My schedule continues to be a work in progress thank you for helping me find a faithful rhythm for ministry, family, homekeeping and self-care! Blessed indeed is the man who hears many gentle voices call him father! Lydia M. Child SCHOOL INGATHERING KITS This is the best time of year to purchase supplies for School Ingathering kits with all the "Back to School" sales. The UM church sends these school kits to children all over the world. You can purchase all the items for a kit or buy a bunch of one or two items. School supplies for kits may be placed on the mission table in the fellowship area. Thanks for helping to educate God s children everywhere! 5 VOLUME 1, ISSUE 8 PAGE 5 NEWS FROM THE BOARDS Church Council Summary June 25 Pastor Christie and seven members were present. The Ministry of Leadership: Scripture Focus, Acts 6:8-15, 7:54-8:4. Connection Church Driver of Vitality: Small Groups and Programs. Church small groups include prayer, study, fellowship, and service. Regardless of church size, vital churches have more programs for children and youth. Small groups and programs offer places for growth in faith and provide opportunities for new people to encounter Jesus. The Ministry of Management: Stewardship: A scholarship application to the Endowment Committee was received from Becca Jaquith who graduated recently from Union High School. Becca has been granted a $500 scholarship which will be paid from the Endowment Fund proceeds. Board of Trustees: Bids are being received for the parsonage septic tank/seepage bed project. United Methodist Men: Bible Study is held at the church each Saturday at 8:30 a.m. United Methodist Women: Guest Day will be hosted on July 12. Technology Committee: The Video/LED TV update remains open for study and discussion. SAVE THE DATE After worship on Sunday, November 4 th we will celebrate God s faithfulness to Geneseo UMC in the past year. We will also review and discuss reports to present for adoption at our annual all-church meeting (called a Charge Conference ) which will be held in Dysart on Tuesday, November 6 th. Please note these two dates on your calendar and watch for more details to come Courage does not always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, I will try again tomorrow. Mary Ann Radmacher WHAT A VBS!! We were blessed with an amazing Vacation Bible School July and VBS Celebration and Community Picnic on Sunday, July 22! Forty-four children and youth assistants plus a big bunch of adult volunteers went overboard for Jesus! We created crafts, did cool experiments, sang great songs, played awesome games, enjoyed terrific meals, heard amazing Bible stories and learned to dive deep in our faith with our Dive Captain and Ocho the Octopus! In addition, we collected over 50 packages of socks and underwear for the Salvation Army and more than $300 in noisy coin offerings for Camp Courageous!! AND we enjoyed a great picnic meal and got to dunk Pastor Christie and good sports Heather Chingren and Trent Ryan in the dunk tank at our Community Picnic! Beginning the first Sunday in August, Welcome Aboard will explore some of the surprising themes these stories have in common and give practical pointers for setting out on our own life adventures. Also for EVERYONE that helped with planning and helping with the Community Day Picnic all who brought salads and bars, set up and cleaned up, Deb Mumm and Lora Olson for coordinating, Donna and Paul Lindeman for cooking the brats and hot dogs, Trent Ryan for picking up the dunk tank, and volunteers who got in the dunk tank.
