Congratulations to Ava Mitchell who was baptized at Geneseo on Sunday, September 11. Congratulations also to her parents Judd Mitchell and Nicole Bateman. Geneseo United Methodist Church th Street Buckingham, IA RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED A COUNTRY CHURCH When I first arrived at Geneseo UMC in July 2010, I was delighted to tell my colleagues that I was heading to a growing, vital, country church. As I ve admitted before, it was as much a boast as a statement of fact. (Although I m happy to report that my boasting in you has some pretty good precedent see 2 Thessalonians 1:4.) I think that there are some negative stereotypes about country churches that they are small, unwelcoming, closed to new people and new ways of doing things. Some folks seem to assume that a country church is a dying church. As Tony and I have settled in, it has been my joy to learn about the history of this place and to see you in action. You have a rich heritage, filled with faithful people who have loved and served the Lord. For over 140 years, you have embraced your role as community leaders, participating in civic clubs and organizations and serving on countless school, county and township boards and agencies. You have shared God s love with neighbors and friends through words and actions and lots and lots of great food! Prayers and praises have flown heavenward from the top of this hill, songs sung a capella or accompanied by piano, organ, guitar, bells, trumpet, saxophone and probably more. You have worked to spread the good news around the world through mission projects, trips and generous gifts. Can you imagine the countless Sunday School classes, Circles and Bible studies that have met here and the number of people who have grown in their faith through your Christian education programs? And I am still delighted to tell my colleagues that Geneseo UMC is a growing, vital, country church!! As we gather together in the coming days for our Celebration of Ministry and Charge Conference, I am excited to reflect with you about what God is up to NOW through your ministries! How have you seen God at work here in the past year? What work does God long to do in us and through us? How is God calling us to grow as a people of faith? What community needs and challenges is God calling us to address? And how might God be encouraging you to grow deeper in faith and in service to others? May we continue to rejoice in God s faithfulness to our country church and may we continue to press ahead toward all that God has in store for this vibrant community of faith! We ll rejoice in ministry highlights since our last charge conference (November 2010) and give thanks. We will also take some time to review and discuss reports that will be presented for adoption at the October 4 th Charge Conference and look forward to the coming year s ministry goals and proposed budget. It promises to be a day in which we will remember and delight, look ahead and dream, and praise God who works in and through us for the sake of the world! 3 September 26 Administrative Council Summary Pastor Christie and four members were present. Duane Christian presided. Prayer/Scripture Pastor Christie opened the meeting with prayer. Scripture, Matthew 6: was shared. Committee Reports/Council Action Ministry Celebration Sunday, October 2: Form A, Form B, 2012 Leadership Roster and 2012 Preliminary Budget Plans will be presented to Geneseo UMC members. Board of Trustees: The church parsonage was scraped and painted by GUMC members on Sept. 24. Adjustments to the sound/audio system are anticipated. A professional evaluation of the system will be planned. Pastor s Report: Pastor Christie will focus on Leadership Development and Spiritual Formation in guiding mission and ministry programming. The September 11 Community Service of Remembrance in Dysart was well attended. The Ice Cream Social will yield about $2500 to be donated to the Benton Tama Disaster Fund. Six youth have committed to participating in the Confirmation Class. Pastor appreciated the Birthday Surprise in her honor on September 17. COMMUNITY DAYS Community Days is an event sponsored by Younkers. Located on the Pastoral Ministry table are booklets for discounts during the Community Days event November 11 and 12. The booklets cost $5.00 and with that you get a coupon for $10.00 off a purchase of $10.00 or more. Geneseo keeps 100% of booklet sales. Since 1999, Community Days has helped more than 15,000 nonprofit and school Meeting U.M.W. October 19 October Salvation Army, 9:00 a.m. Mission Education Event, Marshalltown Iowa Valley Conference Center Studies same as the July School of Christian Mission PASTORAL MINISTRY TABLE The Pastoral Ministry table continues this month in the fellowship hall. The following women are asked to furnish items such as craft items, baked goods, canned goods along with the garden produce each Sunday of the month. The women for October are: Deb Weber, Lora Olson, Pat Peckham, Kalyn Putz, Delores Reints, Jana Ryan and Diana Sash. You do not necessarily need to be on this month s committee to provide for the table. Any and all items are welcome. The freewill offering will go to a cause designated by the Outreach & Witness Committee. COMPASSION COFFEE HOUSE We would like to continue the Compassion Coffee House on Sunday mornings. But in order to do this we need people who are willing to serve. If you would like to be a part of this wonderful ministry, please speak with Pastor Christie.

4 WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY This Sunday, October 2, we will celebrate the Lord s Supper with Christians throughout the world on World Communion Sunday. We will also join United Methodist congregations throughout the nation in a special offering for scholarships, loans and training for ethnic minority students in the United States and international students. This program seeks to support students whose study focus will relate directly to mission and to the elimination of poverty, expansion of global health, leadership development or congregational development. Let us give generously in the name of the Lord of all nations, ages and races! CHARGE CONFERENCE Geneseo s Charge Conference will take place on Tuesday, October 4, at 6:30 p.m. This year it will be held at St. Paul UMC in La Porte City. It will again be a joint conference with the Dysart, La Porte City and Traer UMC s. All members are invited and encouraged to attend. TRUNK OR TREAT All children are invited to bring their costumes to church on Sunday, October 30 to celebrate Halloween and all adults are invited to bring treats to share. After Sunday School, children will get dressed up in their costumes and go trick or treating in our parking lot from car trunk to car trunk. Let s enjoy the fun of this day with our children! Kids feel free to bring your friends! ICE CREAM SOCIAL THANK YOU! Last month s Ice Cream Social was a wonderfully attended event! We had a large crowd. To date, we have raised $3, All the proceeds will go to disaster relief in Benton and Tama Counties. A big thank you to everyone who helps in any way to make the Ice Cream Social a success year after year. Also, thank you to Duane & Dixie Christian for all their hours in coordinating this event. THANK YOU A big thanks to everyone who remembered my birthday with kind words, cards, gifts and a YUMMY cake! It is a joy and privilege to serve with you may you all be blessed as you have blessed Tony and me with your encouragement and kindness! Pastor Christie THANK YOU! It was truly a comfort knowing so many people cared and were praying for us during this difficult time. Thank you again for being such a wonderful church family to us. 5 LAITY SUMMIT Changing the World Together Saturday, October 15 This year s laity summit will build on the work of Rev. Mike Slaughter, who gave the laity address at this year s Annual Conference. Participants will be inspired, challenged and gain practical ideas for ministry in their community and beyond. Any interested laity including Certified Lay Speakers, School for Lay Ministry graduates, certified and local church lay speakers, lay leaders and church council chairpersons are invited. The day runs from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and lunch will be provided for a freewill offering. Please RSVP by Friday, October 7 to if you plan to attend. CHRISTIAN EDUCATION SUNDAY OFFERING We will be taking a special offering for Christian Education on Sunday, October 16. This offering, designated by the Annual Conference, is used to celebrate and promote Christian education and spiritual formation in Iowa. Please give generously.
