Which means that many of us will be traveling over some upcoming weekends. Which means it s time for the pastor to nag about remembering your offering, going to a church service even when you are out of town and staying in the habit of going to church when you are home. Which are all good suggestions, but not what this article will be about. Instead, I encourage you to take worship with you wherever you go this summer. Maybe you could hold your own mini-service on Sunday morning. If you have kids, ask them to help plan a short worship service for your family. What songs about God do they like to sing? What Bible stories do they love? Maybe one of them would be willing to take a crack at a sermon! Perhaps you could all just take a moment at the lake, the cabin, the campground, or the restaurant to name one thing you are thankful for. Or at night around a campfire each person could name what they liked best (or worst!) about God s creation that day. While you are on the road, can you take a moment for someone to read a short daily devotional out loud? (If you need a devotion book, feel free to grab an Upper Room booklet there are copies near each of the entrances at church.) And don t forget we get to be witnesses to Jesus all summer long. Clean up your part of the campground (and maybe pick up after someone else, too) as a reminder for everyone to care for God s good earth. Say hi to your neighbors and friends at parades and celebrations. Smile and be especially kind to harried and exhausted waiters, flight attendants and cashiers during the busy travel and tourist season. And for heaven s sake, if you go somewhere fun, don t forget to send your church family a postcard I hate to nag, but you know we love to hear from you! Your Sister, Pastor Christie

3 VOLUME 1, ISSUE 7 PAGE 3 U.M.W. Women s Guest Luncheon Thursday, July 12 The Geneseo UMW is hosting a guest day for women of the church and community on July 12. Also invited are United Methodist Women units from Dysart UMC, Mt.Auburn UMC, Traer UMC, and St. Paul UMC, La Porte City. Geneseo UMC women are encouraged to bring a neighbor and attend the 11:30 Salad Luncheon at the church. The guest speaker is Hannah Ackerman. Hannah is a high school student. She will present her History Day project which was selected to enter national competition. The title of the presentation is: Aleta Sullivan, Mother of the Sullivan Brothers. Please notify the church secretary at or gumc@fctc.coop to register reservations. If you are interested in helping serve for the Salvation Army the date for that is July 18th at 9:00 a.m. contact Delores Reints for details. PASTOR CHRISTIES S OFFICE HOURS Since I ve completed my ordination requirements, I m readjusting my office schedule. I will generally be in the office Monday through Saturday morning (unless I need to be at an appointment or meeting), Tuesday afternoons and Wednesday evenings. The best way to reach me is either through the church office or on my cell phone (319) I will be away from the office Saturday afternoons/evenings and Sunday afternoons/evenings except in pastoral emergencies or by previous appointment. My schedule continues to be a work in progress thank you for helping me find a faithful rhythm for ministry, family, home-keeping and self-care! THANK YOU How can I thank you enough for the lovely reception, the generous gifts and all of your cards, prayers and well-wishes for my ordination? 5 VOLUME 1, ISSUE 7 PAGE 5 NEWS FROM THE BOARDS Church Council Summary May 29, 2012 Pastor Christie and 9 members attended. Pastor Christie led the prayer of Invitation and Intercession. The Ministry of Leadership: Scripture Focus Acts 2:37-47 and Acts 6: 1-7. Research indicates that healthy churches don t insist on agreement from the start, they come to agreement through humility, listening and discernment. The research also reveals that Drivers of Laity Effectiveness demonstrate vital personal faith and rotation on committees and teams. The Ministry of Management: Marlys Mitchell presided. Pastor s Report: The Confirmation of the four Middle School students was a highlight. Geneseo UMC Fall programming will include Sunday School for that age group. Pastor Christie has updated the church Webpage. A daily scripture verse is posted on Facebook. Maggie and Katy John are now residing at the parsonage with Pastor Christie and Tony. Ministry Work Areas: Vacation Bible School is scheduled to occur July A community lunch and activity event will be held on Sunday, July 22. There is interest in a Back to School Garage Sale which could be held at the church to facilitate community families in acquiring clothing and school supplies economically. The Council voted to participate in the Dysart-Geneseo Ecumenical church worship on July 1 at the Dysart Park. There will be no worship service at Geneseo UMC on July 1. The Trustees have learned that the parsonage septic tank needs to be replaced and they are currently seeking and evaluating bids for this project. The Council voted to allow the Finance Committee to organize appropriate fundraising activity as needed for the parsonage septic work. The Finance Committee reported that there are funds currently in our Capital Projects account which may cover all or part of the costs for this project. Technology Video Upgrade Proposal: A written proposal with rationale was presented to purchase two high quality LED 70 TV sets to be installed in each corner of the south sanctuary wall. Estimated cost of the two sets with wiring and installation is $6900. In accordance with the Capital Projects guidelines, the Trustees had given approval for the Upgrade Proposal to be presented to the Church Council. The next step in the process would be for the Council to request the Finance Committee to establish an appropriate fundraising plan. A motion was made to the Church Council on behalf of the Trustees to approve sending the project on to the Finance Committee for fundraising. The Council tabled the action to be placed on the June 25 agenda. In additional discussion it was decided to request that the Trustees determine the feasibility of obtaining a 70 TV on a trial basis. 6 GENESEO VOICE PAGE 6 DID YOU KNOW? Geneseo has a policy for managing capital projects, which we define as any work project that requires an expenditure of $2500 or more. As Trustees become aware that a project will be in this category, they present it to the Church Council for fund raising approval. The Finance Committee then organizes appropriate fundraising activity for the project. Once the funds [for the project-delete this phrase] are raised and/or pledged, the Trustees then request approval from the Church Council for implementation. Excess funds received for a project go to the General (unspecified) Capital Projects fund for future allocation with the approval of the Church Council. Our Trustees are currently working on two capital projects. The first is the parsonage septic tank. It was discovered during recent repairs that the parsonage septic tank has a large crack and needs to be replaced. Because we are replacing the tank, a seepage bed must also be installed. There may be sufficient funds in our General Capital Projects fund to cover this repair we are currently awaiting bids. The second project is the potential installation of two television monitors in the front of the sanctuary so that images can be projected without having to lower the center screen and cover up the cross. The Church Council has asked the Trustees to do more work to ensure that the screens will be visible and aesthetically acceptable and to provide more information to the congregation before the project is brought to the Council for fundraising approval. America stands on two pillars faith and morality. Without these, our foundation crumbles. George Washington GARAGE SALE COMING IN AUGUST Geneseo will host a garage sale in early August to provide our neighbors with a thrifty back to school shopping opportunity and to be responsible stewards as we recycle those still-too-good-tothrow-away items. All items are welcome, but things we re especially hoping to collect include children s clothing and outerwear, new or gently used backpacks, 4 or 8 gigabyte flash drives and anything else we can think of that may come in handy for young, growing families. We will also try to collect items for door prizes, including coupons or gift certificates for haircuts, TI scientific calculators, shoes, restaurant meals, groceries, etc. Is there a business that you know of who might be willing to donate a free item or service or offer coupons? Feel free to ask or let us know so we can contact them. Items for the sale may be brought to the church basement, behind the curtain, near the piano. Or clearly mark the items garage sale and put on the mission table. Everything not sold will be taken to the Goodwill or Salvation Army.
