1 THE IMMANUEL INFORMER MISSION STATEMENT Building Strong Relationships in Christ, And Making Him Known to All. July 2014 Immanuel Lutheran Church 604 Lafayette Avenue Story City, Iowa address - immanuel@iowatelecom.net Website - A member of Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ. Friday 8:30 A.M noon Sunday Morning Schedule 9:00 A.M. Coffee Fellowship (Narthex) 9:30 A.M. Worship Service 10:30 A.M. Coffee Fellowship (Social Hall) Recently, a nasty flu virus made its way through our entire family. In the space of one week (while my parents were visiting from Tennessee), each one of us came down with it. Thankfully, the virus was shortlived; we all recovered within a day or two. Viruses are contagious; they spread rapidly from person to person. They infect and affect the entire person. Jesus says, The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that you may have life, and have it to the full (John 10:10). Jesus wants to give us abundant, contagious life! How contagious is your faith in Christ? When the early Christians were scattered by persecution, they took the infectious good news about Jesus everywhere they went. When the risen Jesus confronted him, Saul (later known as Paul) went from persecuting the church to spreading it all over the Mediterranean. He was always talking and writing about Jesus (and getting in trouble for it). This month we ll be doing a sermon series on part of Paul s letter to the Romans (see inside for details). In that letter, Paul asserts that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God (Romans 8:21). Through Christ, God is infecting all of creation with freedom and new life! How might God use you today to bring healing and hope to someone? See you in church and around town! Pastor Kurt

3 Romans 8 Mini-Series: The Heart of the Gospel Paul's letter to the Romans is written like a symphony, with many different themes weaving together. In chapter 8, several of these themes come to a crescendo as Paul writes about the heart of the gospel: new life in Christ. How do we live out our identity as God's children in our broken, hurting world? Where do we find hope in the midst of suffering? What is God doing to set things right? Join us as we explore questions like these in our July sermon series on Romans 8: Date Text Theme July 6 Romans 8:1-11 Free at Last! July 13 Romans 8:12-17 Privileges of Being a Child of God July 20 Romans 8:18-27 The Renewal of All Creation July 27 Romans 8:28-39 What Shall We Say? 2014 Mission Trip During the week of July 6-12, eight youth and two adults from Immanuel will be traveling to Martin, South Dakota to be the hands and feet of Jesus in the community through Service Projects (Paint houses, minor home repairs, clean up community facilities and many other service oriented activities) and Kids Club (a VBS type program for community children 5-10 years old). Your prayers for them during this time are encouraged and appreciated! They are excited to share their life-changing experience with you when they return. Please feel free to ask any of the ten participants questions about their trip. You are also invited to attend the Special Mission Trip Recap Night which is scheduled for Wednesday, July 16 at 7:00 PM. During this time together you will hear from the participants of this summer's trip. They will share stories, pictures, music from the trip and laughter! There will be a time for ice cream and coffee afterwards! Thank you note received Dear Members of Immanuel, We want to thank you for your concerns and prayers during our recent health problems. And to those that brought food, that was certainly appreciated. Our thanks also to Pastors Stephen and Kurt for visits and prayers. We are truly blessed. Vi & Pete Twedt Congregational Picnic On Sunday, July 13 everyone is invited to our congregational picnic at Riverside Bible Camp at 11:30 A.M. After worship, why not go home, change clothes, bring a side dish and head out to camp. The church will supply the meat and the deacons will grill it. Several Riverside staff people will lead us in some songs. If it is raining we will meet in Mortvedt Hall, which is the building next to the swimming pool. Hope everyone can be a part of this gathering! Reminder As you travel this summer, please be sure to drop off or mail in your weekly offering before you leave. Your church needs your faithful financial support especially in the summer. Also, as you attend other churches on your vacations, please bring back the bulletins. We enjoy looking through them.

4 Giving at Immanuel We believe that God blesses us so we can be a blessing to the world. We invite people to share their time, talents and financial resources to advance Christ's work through our congregation. Paul says in 2 Corinthians 9:6-7: Remember this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. New Online Giving Option: Clover Donations We now have a new online option to donate to Immanuel! You can make secure one-time or recurring donations from your bank account through a link on our webpage. Just click on the Give to Immanuel link at the bottom of the page to set up an account. We do not yet have the capability of accepting credit or debit cards; please let us know if you are interested in this possible future option. Our website provides a list of funds you can designate your offerings toward if you choose. See Offering Envelopes Immanuel provides offering envelopes for those who wish to give an offering each week in worship. The envelopes are mailed directly to your home each quarter. Contact the church office if you would like to receive them. Direct Deposit Immanuel also can process your contributions through direct deposit. You have the option to contribute monthly or weekly in any amount you choose. You can designate part or all of your contribution into any of our church funds. If you would like to set up a direct deposit from your checking or savings account, please stop in the church office to complete an authorization form. Thrivent Choice Members of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans can designate their Choice Dollars toward Immanuel's ministry. See our website to find out how: Thank you for your faithful response to God s generosity! Sunday School News We hope you are having a great summer! The Sunday School board has been working on the curriculum for next year and we are very excited to have everyone back in September. On September 7th come join us for Rally Sunday! The 2nd graders will receive their Bibles that day during our 9:30 worship service. We will have the parents come forward with their children during this time. On September 21st during the 9:30 worship service the 3 year old class and parents will be called forward to receive a gift from the congregation. Nursery Remodel Planning Having an inviting nursery space is vital for young families to feel welcome and at home in our congregation. Our dated nursery needs a larger space, new furnishings and toys to accommodate our growing number of kids. Ideally, it would provide a place where parents could take busy youngsters during adult education and worship so they could more fully participate themselves. We also have ideas about how the space could be used for fellowship and community outreach. Please be on the lookout for more information in the coming weeks on how you can help with the renovation.

If you would be willing to serve as coordinator for scheduling volunteers please contact the church office at or Information about signing up to deliver the meals will be included in the August newsletter. Riverside Bible Camp Every youth from Immanuel who attends a week of summer Bible Camp receives a $100 scholarship from the congregation. Any youth attending Alpha Camp receives a $50 scholarship. Gifts can be given throughout the year to our Camp Scholarship Fund. Please make the check out to Immanuel, but mark it for the fund. A week of camp now costs over $400. Please be in prayer for all the campers, counselors, and other full-time staff that will be at Riverside Bible Camp this summer. Note: Anyone wanting to attend camp, but in need of further financial help in order to attend, should let either of the pastors or Zachary know. We want to give everyone an opportunity to go to camp! Registration forms for camp are available online at or you may pick one up from the shelf in the narthex. Hospitalizations If you or a family member are admitted to Mary Greeley Hospital please ask that your name be put on the Pastor s list so that we might call on you. You can also call the church office or one of the pastors directly. The pastors always appreciate the opportunity to visit those hospitalized who have connections to Immanuel. Back to School Supply Drive The Angel Gift program is once again sponsoring a school supply drive for Roland-Story students in need of these things. Supplies will be collected during July to be given to families at school registration in August. A board is in our narthex containing slips of paper listing needed school supplies. Members are encouraged to take a slip of your choice and purchase the indicated supplies. The supplies need to be returned to the church by Tuesday, July 29, so they can be handed out at school registration. Kitchen notes One or more volunteers are needed to serve as kitchen coordinator(s) to go through the kitchen each month, checking on supplies, cleaning out the refrigerator and cooler, etc. A number of towels and utensils from the church kitchen have disappeared. Is it possible you have taken some items home to wash and forgot to bring them back? Please check to see if you have any church items in your kitchen that you have taken home by mistake. We also have a large collection of cake pans that have been left at the church. Please check the shelves in the far northeast corner of the kitchen for your pans. Thanks! Thank you received To the Immanuel Congregation: Thank you for the flowers in memory of Mel Sucher. The family appreciates your thoughtfulness! The family of Melvin Sucher Note: Pastor Sucher was ordained at Immanuel and he and his wife were members here for many years. He passed away on Sunday, June 8, in Minnesota.

8 If you could use a get away from it all vacation but can t seem to get away at all, stop in at the church library and check out one of these great reads for a quick and easy escape. The Inn at Shining Waters trilogy by Melody Carlson will take you to the beautiful banks of the Suislaw River in Oregon. The series - River s Song, River s Call, and River s End - is the saga of three generations of women coming to terms with their Native American heritage in the midst of whatever else life in the mid-20th century can throw their way. Anna returns home after 20 years of turning her back on the life she knew as a child to settle her mother s estate. Finding solace and healing there, she decides to stay, converting her family s general store into The Inn at Shining Waters. Over the next 30 years, Anna, her daughter Lauren, and granddaughter Sarah each respond to the call of the river and its Creator in their own way, always seeking the peace that only God s grace and forgiveness can provide. What Follows After by Dan Walsh is a book you cannot put down once you start reading it. Scott and Gina Harrison and their two sons, Colt and Timmy, appear to be a happy family, but things are not at all as they seem to be. Tired of the way things are, 10 year old Colt hatches a plan to run away with his little brother to his aunt and uncle s house. Along the way Timmy disappears when Colt leaves him alone for a few minutes in a restaurant. Once informed, Scott and Gina are paralyzed with fear. Can a marriage already under stress withstand an emotional blow such as this? Follow along as author Walsh shows how God can restore the love, trust, and respect this broken family needs to come back together. Jennifer Chiaverini s Mrs. Lincoln s Dressmaker is historical fiction at its best. This is the story of Elizabeth Keckley, an African-American slave who bought her own freedom. By her sheer determination, self-teaching and God s given talents, she earns her way into the White House as Mary Todd Lincoln s modiste, or dressmaker, during President Lincoln s turbulent term of office. Even more amazing is the inseparable friendship that develops between the two women. Based on true facts and real people, Ms. Chiaverini provides unusual insight into life in the Lincoln White House for the unique, behind the scene perspective or a trusted friend, adding just the right fictional details to make this a story you won t want to miss. Be cool! Read a good book from the church library. Looking Back to 1776 The Declaration of Independence is the core document of the United States founding. When it says that we are endowed by the Creator with certain unalienable rights, it expresses the basis of our liberty. The American experience is built on a key belief that our rights come from God. The founders of our country believed that our system of government could function over time only if the people it governed were moral and virtuous. A democracy cannot survive if there is nothing to restrain the appetites of its citizens. For us, morality, which is based on spiritual beliefs, is necessary for the survival of our Republic. We believe the concept of the separation of church and state was intended to prevent government from establishing an official religion; it has been twisted into outright hostility toward religious beliefs. We believe our nation is founded on the Judeo-Christian ethic, but we welcome other citizens who come from a different religious tradition and are attracted to America as a haven where they can practice their own faith without fear of persecution. - excerpted from Children at Risk By Dr. James Dobson And Gary Bauer
