Sunday Morning Schedule (September through May, unless noted on calendar) From the Pastor When I was in seminary in Minnesota, a friend of mine suffered from Seasonal Affective Disorder. The long, cold winters with so little sun sent him into a depresssion that affected his energy, mood, and appetite. He felt hopeless and lost. What helped him overcome the depression was a bright lamp that he sat near every morning to simulate sunlight. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. As we enter January, we begin a season of light called Epiphany. We listen to the stories of the beginning of Jesus ministry, his baptism, and his Transfiguration, where his face shone like the sun and his clothes became as white as the light. 8:30 A.M. 2 Pastor s article continued from front page... In our troubled world, we need Jesus to shine his light into our lives. The God who said, Let light shine out of darkness, made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God s glory displayed in the face of Christ (2 Corinthians 4:6). 6 Church & Community Announcements, continued Every congregation, member and pastor is being invited to set aside some time each day of January 2, 3 and 4, 2018 for prayer. Our attitude toward prayer has often been characterized by saying, well, all we can do now is pray!. Prayer is not the hopeless act of desperation. Prayer is a gift that God has given to us as a means to approach the throne of grace with confidence like that of a child coming to her parents sharing concerns, victories, defeats and every part of life. It is an opportunity to express the deepest heartache and the greatest joy. Prayer is a conversation between the Creator and the created and the conversation began with God, for us, in Christ Jesus. Let s come together as an association of congregations across the U.S. and around the world to pray! I believe that the church will never rise up until we first get down on our knees! --LCMC Service Coordinator, Mark Vander Tuig Day One: January 2 This is a day focused on confession. We have made our lives, our relationships and even the church in our own image. We confess that the church belongs to Jesus and not to us. We gather to lay down our pride, our sin and our agenda and ask the Lord of the church for forgiveness, which He gives freely and with mercy. Day Two: January 3 This is a day of petition. Pray for your congregation, for the pastor, for the leaders, for those who carry out ministries, for the Sunday School teachers, for the Confirmation leaders, for those leading adult Bible studies and for those leading small groups. Pray for those in hospital and nursing home ministries. Pray for all those connected to your church that they might know God s redeeming love for all in Christ. Day Three: January 4 This is a day for vision. Pray that the Holy Spirit will again move through the hearts and minds of leaders and pastors that God s vision for His church might be revealed and fulfilled. This is a time of prayer for renewal, revival and encouragement. Pray for God s vision. If you know any friends or There will be no Trinity or Confirmation family in need of meals Class or Junior Choir on Wednesday, following births, deaths, January 3. 10 Church Library Notes Read. Study. Learn. January always seems to bring the coldest days of winter to us. Hopefully you are prepared for extra indoor time with a stack of good books to read. Here are some recent additions to our library. Catching the Wind by Melanie Dobson follows the story of investigative reporter Quenby Vaughn as she seeks to unravel the mystery of what happened to ten year old Brigitte Berthold during the attempted German infiltration of England in World War II. Told from both Brigitte s and Quenby s viewpoints, you will quickly become involved in their stories, following Quenby as she searches for the nearly 80 year old clues Brigitte left behind, finding a most unexpected yet satisfying conclusion. If you are having withdrawal symptoms from watching all those holiday movies, you might enjoy reading The Wedding Shop by Rachel Hauck. This is another novel where the reader follows two stories that become increasingly intertwined as the book goes along. Heart s Bend, Tennessee has been the place to go for all things bridal since 1890, when Cora Scott s Aunt Jane first opened the wedding shop. When her aunt died, Cora inherited the shop, successfully running it for many years but never getting to plan her own wedding. Many years later, the abandoned shop, now nearly in ruins, captures the imagination of returning military officer Haley Morgan. Follow both Cora s and Haley s stories as they seek to bring happiness to others on this most special of days while each trying to find the love that will fulfill their own longing. New to non-fiction: The Spotlight of Faith by Bill Crowder. Understanding what it means to walk with God. Forgiveness by Gary Inrig. Discover the power and reality of authentic Christian forgiveness. Understanding the Healing Power of God by Doug Jones. How to get it and what to do with it once you ve got it. Resolve to be there Let our New Year s resolution be this: We will be there for one another as fellow members of humanity, in the finest sense of the word. Goran Persson

14 Immanuel Lutheran Church 604 Lafayette Avenue Story City, Iowa Address Service Requested Non-Profit Org. U.S. Postage Paid Story City, Iowa Permit No. 44 january the old has gone, the new is here! 2 Corinthians 5:17 WInter gift by Heidi Mann Snow, ice and cold can make winter a hassle. Snow days due to a blizzard may thrill students but usually inconvenience parents. But now and then, winter blankets the earth so heavily that it seems to quiet everything. We re granted permission to hunker down at home, snuggle close with family or pets, enjoy a book or movie, make cocoa or cookies, and rest. It s like a surprise sabbath the gift of grace-time when no one s expected to get out the door or the driveway. Perhaps indeed, as Job declared, God sees fit on such days to put our busyness on hold and shut us all indoors so we pause and remember his work his place in our lives. Praise God for snow days!
