Coffee Fellowship (Social Hall) Each morning at the end of our block, a few of us parents with little kids stand at the corner, waiting for the school bus. On one particularly cold morning this week, one of the other parents said to me, I can t wait for winter to be done. It s hard to wait for things to get better, especially when you re cold, tired, or suffering. We worry about our future, paralyzed by our pain and numbed by the violence in the nightly news. In the midst of our despair, the Apostle Paul lifts our eyes to hope: I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed...in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God (Romans 8:18-21). We wait with eager anticipation for God to set all things right. During Lent, both our Wednesday night and Sunday sermon series are focusing on the hope we have in Jesus. Our Sunday morning adult education classes in the Social Hall and Cornerstone Room explore those themes more deeply: how our brokenness is Restored in Christ and how we are swept up into an Epic: The Story God is Telling. We are praying together with other area churches for God s reign to come, using the Seek God for the City 2015 booklets. Bethel Lutheran is hosting the World Day of Prayer on March 6, and we will meet at the high school auditorium on the evening of March 29 for our Palm Sunday community prayer service. May your hope be renewed and strengthened through prayer this Lent. If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! 2 Corinthians 5:17 Pastor Kurt

3 Lent 2015 Wednesday Evening Services Theme: Restored in Christ The season of Lent is a time for us to face together the brokenness of our lives and our world, and then turn that brokenness over to Christ so that we can be restored by him through the cross. Written by seminary professor Joel Biermann, each service in this stirring series focuses on a certain event in the Lenten story and takes a good, hard look at a broken element from that particular story. Coming to an understanding of how each of these broken elements leads to restoration in Christ is key to understanding what it ultimately means to live today as new creations in Christ. The themes for our series are as follows: Wednesday, March 4 Broken Trust Restored Wednesday, March 11 Broken Bread Restored Wednesday, March 18 Broken Promises Restored Wednesday, March 25 Broken Justice Restored Please join us each Wednesday night at 7 P.M. Each service includes a children s message and special music. Communion will be celebrated on Maundy Thursday, April 2. A coffee and fellowship time will be held in the narthex each week following the service. We are having light suppers each Wednesday at 6 P.M. The Senior Choir will serve on March 4. Sunday School youth serve on March 11. The Men of Immanuel and Young Adults will serve on March 18. Seasoned Souls will serve on March 25. May our Lenten journey this year be a time of spiritual refreshment. Please make an effort to come each week. Added Note: The pastors will be highlighting some specific scripture passages during the sermons and are asking those attending the Lenten services to bring their own Bibles if possible so you can underline those verses.

4 Sunday School News The Kingdom Kids (3 year olds-1st graders) will continue their lessons on the Miracles of Jesus and will have two Easter lessons at the end of the month. On March 22nd the kids will be singing in church. The Young Disciples (2nd - 6th grade) will start a three-week series that teaches the children about the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. On March 29th the Young Disciples will take part in a Palm Sunday program during church and will be making palm crosses again this year and handing them out to members of the congregation! For the next couple weeks the kids will be working on memorizing the 10 commandments. P.S. Thanks to all who donated cash, clothing and personal items for our mission project for Hope Ministries in Des Moines. Baby Shower Please consider this your invitation to join us for a baby girl shower honoring Tyler and Natalie Whipple. The shower will be held on Saturday, March 7th from 9:30-11:30 A.M. in the church social hall. The couple is registered at Target and Kohl's. We are looking forward to having a number of individuals and families join our congregation later this spring. For those who are presently a part of non-lutheran churches, we will have three classes, at which time we will review the basic elements of the Christian faith. Those transferring from other Lutheran churches will be asked to attend the last class. Please let Pastor Anenson, Pastor Jensen or the church office know if you would like to join our faith community! Reminder about weather conditions If Roland-Story Schools are dismissed early due to weather conditions, then church events will also be cancelled that day. Information will also be posted to the Immanuel website. If church services need to be cancelled because of inclement weather, we will post a notice on KCCI Channel 8 and on the Immanuel website. The one concern of the devil is to keep Christians from praying. He fears nothing from prayerless studies, prayerless works, prayerless religion; he laughs at our toil, mocks at our wisdom, but trembles when we pray. Samuel Chadwick Service of Holy Communion There will be a short service of Holy Communion following the worship service on Sunday, March 15 in the sanctuary. World Day of Prayer The churches of Story City invite all, including men and women, to their World Day of Prayer Service, Friday, March 6 at Bethel Lutheran Church. Registration and coffee will be from 9-9:30 A.M. The program will be from 9:30 11 A.M. This year s service will be focusing on the Bahamas. When praying, don t hang up, hang on.

6 You Can Play an Important Role in Our Stephen Ministry Because you may know of a friend, neighbor, co-worker, or relative who is going through a difficult time and who could benefit from the focused care, encouragement, and support of a Stephen Minister. If you know of someone who is hurting, talk with one of our Stephen Leaders: Pastor Anenson, Pastor Jensen or Gayle Tate. They can talk with you about how we can connect the person you know with one of our Stephen Ministers, It s a great way for you to show how much you care! To all Stephen Ministers: The next meeting is Sunday, March 8 during the Coffee Fellowship Hour in the Cornerstone Room. If you have been trained as a Stephen Minster you are welcome to attend. Young Adults Dinner Out in Ames On Friday, March 27th, the Young Adults are heading out for dinner together in Ames. Need childcare? Some of our teens and adults will have games and activities for your kids in Immanuel s nursery and chapel from 5:30 to 8 P.M. Donations will go toward this summer s youth mission trip to Indianapolis! To find out where we re going and to let us know how many to expect please RSVP to Pastor Kurt at jensku01@gmail.com. Would you like to help play with the kids or give a donation? Talk to Pastor Kurt or Zachary. Our Missionaries As you look over the list of the missionaries we help support (on the first page of the newsletter), let s take the time to pray that God will continue to give them strength, courage and protection for the important work they have been called to do. It s hard to predict if March will come in like a lion or a lamb with the weather we ve had so far this year. We can predict it will come in with a smile if you pick up one of these new books to read from our church library! If you have been wondering what Father Tim Kavanagh and the quirky collection of saints and sinners from Mitford have been up to lately, you will want to check out Jan Karon s addition to the Mitford series, Somewhere Safe with Somebody Good. Father Tim and his wife Cynthia are back from their trip to Ireland. Cynthia continues to work as an author/ illustrator, but Father Tim, having retired from his pastoral duties, finds himself at loose ends. Seemingly unsolvable problems do have a way of finding their way to him however and he uncannily manages to come up with just the right solutions. Karon has written another thoroughly enjoyable slice of life from Mitford. Adam and Elizabeth Carlson are celebrating another anniversary. With their family gathered around them, they share a special dance, just as they have each year for the past 60 years. The poignant story of how that tradition came to be is told in Darrel Nelson s The Anniversary Waltz. It s 1946 and Adam returns home from the war eager to build a future on the family farm. Life is full of challenges though the farm is run-down, his father is distant and angry, and the special girl who catches his eye is already spoken for. How Adam works so hard to make it all come together and then nearly loses it all makes for a heartwarming story with characters you won t soon forget. Once you begin reading The Oak Tree by Maureen Lang you will have a hard time putting it down. Helping her mother clean house in preparation for selling it, Talie Ingraham finds and lays claim to her great-grandmother s family Bible, a box of old letters, and a well-worn journal dating back to the 1800s. Expecting to find a legacy of distinguished history and education, Talie is shocked by what she reads in the journal. This novel tells the parallel stories of Cosima Hamilton and Talie Ingraham, and how their lives, separated by 150 years are ultimately linked together by a single gene, known as fragile X. This book draws on the real life experiences of the author, who is also the mother of a child with fragile X syndrome. Don t pass up the opportunity to find some exceptional books to read. Stop in to the library soon!
