But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. All: Most merciful God, we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. Thank you for filling out the white information card in front of you. You may put it in the offering plate or give it to an usher as you come forward for communion. Holy Communion. Today, we celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Communion. In prayerful preparation for the Table, please read and fill out the Information Card in front of you and give to an usher as you are directed forward. We welcome to this family meal all who have been baptized into the Christian faith, and who believe that Christ is present in the bread and wine offering forgiveness of sins, life and salvation. Children who have not been prepared to receive the Sacrament are invited to come with their family for a blessing. If you are unable to come to the front to receive the sacrament, let an usher know and the elements will be brought to you. Simply point to the middle of the tray if you would like grape juice instead of wine. Altar flowers today are given in honor of Jim & Berniece Voga s 55th wedding anniversary, which is October 11. If you have a prayer need this morning, you may use the back of the white card in the pew rack and place the request in the Prayer Box in the narthex by the coat rack. You can also submit prayer requests at any time on our new website. There will be a time of fellowship and refreshments in the Social Hall following the worship service. Everyone is invited. Today is Food Pantry Sunday. Place your items for the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry in the grocery cart in the narthex. Cash donations are also welcome. Checks can be made out to Immanuel with a notation for the Food Pantry and placed in the offering plate. Next Sunday will be our monthly Improvement Fund offering. This fund is used for capital expenditures to maintain and improve our church buildings. Thanks to everyone who gave generously so that we could complete our electrical upgrade. Help us welcome Zachary! Check out the display in the narthex to find ideas of ways you can help Zachary make himself at home here in Story City. There are opportunities to sign up to supply items that he will need for his apartment. There is also a sign-up in the narthex for dates to invite Zachary to your home for lunch or supper. You might want to invite other members from the congregation to join you. We are looking at Thursday nights and either Saturday or Sunday. Tickets for the November 17 Praise Dinner will go on sale beginning today before and after worship. There will be two dinner seatings, at 5:00 and 5:45 with food prepared by Chef Chris Hansen and choir members and served on tables decorated by Judy McIlrath. The concert will follow in the sanctuary at 6:30 and will feature the choir, small groups and special guests. Tickets are $15 each ($7.50 for children under 10) and need to be purchased in advance at the church or at Norsemen Realty Office. You will notice a number of pictures on several tables in the social hall when you go downstairs for coffee. They are no longer being used and each member family is welcome to take one or two home with them today. Next Sunday, the Primary Singers will be going to Bethany Manor following Sunday School to sing at the Bethany Manor 10 A.M. worship service. Teachers will plan to transport children to and from Bethany Manor. Parents are welcome to join us for the service there. We will have the children back to Immanuel by 10:30 A.M. Our sympathy to Pastor Kurt and his family on the death of his grandmother, Gladys Heetland, on September 28 in Worthington, Minnesota. Congratulations to Emma Frosland who turns 100 on October 9. The family of Sara Anderson invites you to shower her with birthday greetings and memories of the past and present with a card shower for her 80 th birthday, which is October 14. Cards and well wishes may be sent to her at 417 Hillcrest Avenue in Story City. Five of our members were invited to be a part of the Story County Freedom Flight to Washington, D.C. this past Tuesday. About 150 veterans went who had served during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Those from Immanuel who went included: Ken Frette, Rick Frette, Don Paulson, Tom Johnson, and Harold Bolstad. Become a Part of our Church Family. We are looking forward to having a number of individuals and families join our congregation on Sunday, November 3. For those who are presently a part of other Christian denominations, we will have a series of classes on October 13, 20, and 27, at which time we will review the basic elements of the Christian faith. Those transferring from other Lutheran Churches are asked to attend the final class on Sunday, October 27. Please let Pastor Anenson, Pastor Jensen or the church office know if you would like to join our faith community! Pastor Anenson and Pastor Jensen will attend the LCMC Annual International Gathering today through Wednesday in Dearborn (Detroit) Michigan. Pastor Kurt and his family are already there visiting family in the area. If there is a need for pastoral care while the pastors are gone, please call the church office or Pastor Jim Norem in Randall.

4 Sunday School Fall Mission Project. The Sunday School classes are supporting the Sandra J. Schulze American Cancer Society Hope Lodge in Rochester, Minnesota for their mission project this fall. Having 60 rooms, the Hope Lodge of Rochester offers cancer patients a free place to stay when receiving cancer treatments at the Mayo Clinic. Not having to worry about where to stay or how to pay for lodging allows guests to focus on getting well. Hope Lodge provides a nurturing, home-like environment where guests can retreat to private rooms or connect with others. It also provides a variety of resources and information about cancer and how best to fight the disease. Items that you may donate that they need for everyday activities include: mattress covers/pads (deep pocket plastic with zipper for single or double beds), bed pillows (regular size), bed pillow protectors (standard waterproof), bath towels (white 16x28 or 27x52), USA TODAY subscriptions, paper products, Clorox wipes, greeting cards (so that guests can send cards to family & friends), umbrellas, batteries (any size), postage stamps, hand sanitizer, and gift cards (Wal-Mart, Target, Hy-Vee, KwikTrip). You may leave these items in the narthex by the display. We will be collecting items through the month of October. Congregational Birthday Party. As part of our 115th anniversary year celebration, we thought it would be fun to have a Congregational Birthday Party. It will be held following the church service on Sunday, October 27. A table will be decorated for each month. You will be able to celebrate with others that share your birthday month. Cake and other treats will be served. There is a signup board in the narthex so we can get a rough estimate of how many to expect. The host/hostess for each table is also listed. If you are a Thrivent Financial member who has directed Thrivent Choice Dollars in the past, you are reminded that any recurring direction you set up in the past does not apply to this year. You must once again direct any funds for 2013 by either calling Thrivent at or by logging in to the Thrivent website. Funds directed online during October and November to local congregations will be doubled by Thrivent. If you need assistance in directing funds, you are welcome to talk to your Thrivent representative or contact the church office. Attendance last Sunday 233 Colorado Flooding - Recent flooding in Colorado brought devastation and destruction to the lives of many. The LCMC S new Lutheran Disaster Assistance (LDA) Fund is ready to help victims of the flooding. 100% of your gifts to this fund will go to relief efforts. If you d like to share a gift, please make a check out to Immanuel with a notation for Colorado Flood Relief. Come out and support your team and the local food pantry for our 4 th annual Pack the Stadium, Pack the Food Pantry night, October 11 th at Norsemen Stadium. Donations of non perishable food items and personal hygiene items along with monetary donations will be collected at the gate. A total will be announced at halftime of the varsity game. Gate prices of $5.00 will still be collected for admission. Roland-Story High School is holding a Community Service Work Day on Wednesday, October 16, in the Roland and Story City communities. If you are in need of help with yard work or some other odd job because of physical/medical disabilities or age, they would like to help you! Please contact Roland-Story High School at and ask for the guidance office to sign up for this FREE service. New Small Groups Forming! Storyline: Finding Your Subplot in God's Story by Donald Miller. When the credits roll at the end of your life, how will you have wanted to live? In our 8-week Storyline small groups, you'll reflect on the story and theme of your life as part of the grand story of what God is doing in the world. The Storyline workbook and online tools will help you imagine a better story for yourself and share it with the world. When you complete the Storyline process, you'll have a life plan that will give you clarity and direction for living a great story. Small groups will meet at convenient times for those participating. One $30 workbook is recommended for each person. Sign up on the table in the narthex or by contacting the church office; let us know if you would like to help lead or host a small group!

5 Fall Sermon Series - Discovering Your Life Story What is God doing in the world? What is He working on? And where can I plug in? The role that we get to play in God s story is still unfolding. Our stories are blank pages that can be filled in with God s purposes. We ll discover in the weeks ahead how our stories are subplots in God s story and how our lives can be so much richer when we discover our Storyline. September 15 What is My Storyline? September 29 - Redeeming Life s Negative Turns October 6 Creating Positive Life Incidents October 13 Why Your Story Matters October 20 Sharing Your Story Upcoming Events All men of Immanuel are invited to meet each Saturday morning from 8-9 A.M. in the Social Hall during the school year. Donuts and coffee are served. Video clips or an informal Bible Study are usually on the agenda. Everyone is welcome! Immanuel Cookbook Dinner. Next Sunday, October 13th 5 P.M. Recipes from our 115 th Anniversary Cookbook! Come join us for an evening of fun and great food! All ages are invited; bring a dish to pass from a recipe you submitted to (or found in) our new church cookbook! We ll have cards to list the name of the recipe and the page number by each dish on the table. Drinks and table service will be provided. Freewill donations will go toward our Nursery Improvement Fund. Don t have a copy of the cookbook yet? Need more copies for gifts? Stop by the church office during the week or the welcome table in the narthex on Sundays. $18 for one or $30 for two cookbooks. Quilt Tying this Thursday. We have a half day scheduled for quilt tying this Thursday, October 10 from 9 A.M.-12 noon in the Social Hall. Drop in for an hour or stay for the morning. There will be coffee time at 10:30 A.M. Treats are welcome but certainly not required! Come share in the fellowship with others while providing a service to people in need. Reminders The Children s Activity Bulletins are available from the ushers for young children. Nursery facilities are available across from the restrooms on the main floor of the educational wing. Please feel free to take your child there if needed during the service. Tune in to the Immanuel Lutheran Radio Broadcast each Sunday morning at 8 A.M. on KASI Radio (AM 1430). The new edition of The Lutheran Digest is available on the shelf in the narthex. A Stephen Ministry table is set up by the church office. Please take time to look over the information there. Check out the new church website. We try to keep the new website up to date so that it can be a ready source of information for you concerning all church activities and ministries. Look at the What s New & Upcoming tab for current news items. Under the resource tab click Photo Galleries to view pictures of recent events. Past sermons, newsletters, and bulletins are also available on the website. Adult Education - Fall Quarter - See Through the Scriptures A picture is worth a thousand words. As you explore the See Through the Scriptures Bible Study program you will view dozens of colorful illustrations that will help you remember what is said. This eight week course has been used by thousands of churches across the country as a way for students to get an overview of the Biblical story. The pastors will lead this course, which began September 22 and will continue through Sunday, Nov. 10 for all adults in the Social Hall at 8:30 A.M. Those who attend will be invited to purchase a workbook. Don t miss this unique opportunity to get to know God s story in a deeper way.
