Indeed, Lent comes from old German and English words for spring. So, while it might be too soon to open windows or hang clothes on the line, now is ideal for some spiritual spring cleaning. Lent calls us to examine our beliefs, confess and dispose of old grudges and selfish habits, dust off our Bibles for a new routine of study and prayer, air out our hearts and brighten up our attitudes. Lent cleaning lets the Holy Spirit freshen our faith and it s never too early for that.

5 Church & Community Announcements Do you have questions about the Pastoral Job Descriptions from the Annual Meeting? The Immanuel Transition Team and the Church Council will hold a forum on Sunday, February 4, to give all members the opportunity to ask questions and discuss the Pastor Job Descriptions handout that was presented by the Council at the Annual Meeting on Sunday, January 21. This forum will be held in the sanctuary, immediately after worship service, and will include short presentations from the Transition Team and Council members, followed by open discussion time for congregation members. The Pastor Job Descriptions are draft documents prepared by the Church Council, originally prompted from recommendations by the Transition Team, and when finalized will be used in the next steps regarding our future staffing configuration here at Immanuel. The Church Council is asking for feedback and comments from all Immanuel members to assist them in finalizing these job description documents, in preparation for their Council Planning Retreat on February 11. All members are invited to attend and participate in this forum on February 4. Upon completion of this forum, members will then adjourn to the Social Hall for Immanuel s monthly First Sunday Potluck. You re invited to bring a dish to share for our First Sunday of the Month Congregational Potluck on Sunday, Feb. 4! We ll meet in the Social Hall after worship and the forum. Drinks and tableware provided. Don t miss out on the food and fellowship! Bible Study on the Gospel of John Join us for this verse-by-verse walk through the life and message of Jesus, told by one of his closest disciples. Meets in the chapel on Sunday, Feb. 4th and 11th at 8:30 a.m. and then in the Social Hall on Feb. 18th and following Sundays. Learn from the Hymns Do the lyrics of our favorite hymns ever just go by without you noticing what they say? What can we learn from the lives and words of the authors of classic hymns and modern worship songs? Pastor Kurt resumes teaching this adult class on Sunday, Feb. 18th at 8:30 a.m. in the chapel.

6 Church & Community Announcements, continued Immanuel Custodian Needed: Shelly Nibe has decided to step down as our custodian effective Feb. 5 so she can take a full-time position at the Fitness Center. We greatly appreciate all the years she has served here! Please contact the church office if you know of someone who might be interested in this part-time position here at Immanuel. Here's a note from Shelly: Beginning on the 5th of February, my 16 year-long journey working for Immanuel will come to a close. I have resigned as your custodian in order to pursue a full-time position at the Lifetime Fitness Center here in Story City. I would like to thank the congregation for the opportunity to serve for so many years in this role and to Pastor Kurt and the staff for the support and encouragement they have provided. Although I will miss the people that I work with and the flexibility that this job has so graciously allowed me, I'm excited to begin a new chapter! With sincere thanks, Shelly Nibe God loves us with an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3). Immanuel Women s Ministry Quilt Tying Work Day will be Thursday, February 8 from 9 A.M. to noon. 7 Church & Community Announcements, continued We love because [God] first loved us (1 John 4:19). My Bible Faith Stepping Stone Blessing Throughout January and early February, our 2nd and 3rd graders and their parents have been journeying through all 66 books of the Bible, highlighting verses and developing a nightly pattern of conversation with each other and God. On February 11th during worship, they will come up front as families with their Bibles to receive a blessing. The nightly faith practice they are learning, the FAITH5 (Faith Acts In The Home), is a simple pattern to incorporate into your bedtime routine for five to fifteen minutes a night. When done over time, the FAITH5 carries the power to enrich communication, deepen understanding, aid sleep, and promote mental, physical and spiritual health. The five steps are: SHARE your highs and lows READ a Bible verse or story TALK about how the Bible reading might relate to your highs and lows PRAY for one another's highs and lows BLESS one another To learn how to use the FAITH5 with your family, visit The Immanuel CORE members are asked to attend a short meeting after worship service on Sunday, February 18, in the Cornerstone Room. Items for discussion and decision include the future landscaping project east of the Chapel, future fundraising projects, and possibility of additional CORE and/or ALPHA sessions. And, even if you have not participated in a CORE or ALPHA session in the past, all Immanuel members, friends and guests are invited to attend this brief meeting/discussion on the 18th. If you have any questions, please contact Mary or Joel Danielson. A short service of Holy Communion will follow the worship service on Sunday, February 18. Anyone is welcome to join us for this intimate gathering around our Lord s Table. Women s Monthly Bible Study will continue on Tuesday, February 20 at 2 P.M. in the Social Hall. All women are welcome to join us for a time of fellowship and study. March Newsletter Articles & Announcements are due to the church office by Thursday, February 22 at noon. Have something to share with the congregation? Put it in our monthly church newsletter! Note: Late submissions are not guaranteed publication.

8 Wednesday Nights in Lent and Holy Week 2018 (post this on your fridge!) Not as I will, but as you will, Jesus prayed to his Father the night before he went to the cross for our salvation. 11 Church Library Notes Read. Study. Learn. This month the library has two new works of fiction on its shelves for you to enjoy. Historical fiction readers appreciate the lengths author Lynn Austin goes to in researching the backgrounds for her novels. In her book Waves of Mercy she delves into the early history of her home state of Michigan and the lake it was named for, telling the parallel stories of young Chicago socialite Anna Nicholson, who is staying at the Hotel Ottawa in Holland, Michigan, recovering emotionally from her broken engagement, and the elderly widow, Geesje de Jong, who is writing her memories of being a Dutch immigrant in the late 1800 s for the town s semi-centennial anniversary. This is truly a love story on all levels. Not the least of which is the love of a merciful God who brings the past and present together in a most surprising way. Readers will come away with a new appreciation for the heritage of faith these settlers have given us and a deep sense of gratitude for a God who never gives up on one of His own. Did you know the only time Jesus refers to a woman as daughter in the Bible is in the story of the bleeding woman who touches the hem of his robe and is healed? Knowing that every word Jesus spoke was used intentionally, why would he address her in such a tenderly way? The Bible gives us very little information about this woman, but in her novel, Land of Silence, author Tessa Afshar tells her story, based on her research into the culture and customs of the time. With the Bible as her inspiration, Afshar uses her imagination to write a truly engaging story and the reader quickly becomes immersed in the daily life of this young Jewish woman and her family, identifying with her struggle to understand why a loving God would put her through the suffering, guilt and alienation she experiences. While the author herself says, This story can in now way replace the transformative power that the reader will encounter in the Scriptures, it does a powerful job of bringing this story to life and making it real in a meaningful way. If you need an excuse to come in to the library for a book or two, look no further than the thermometer. These cold winter days fly by when you are lost in a good book! God s words are sweeter than honey (Psalm 119:103).
