1 Closing Litany Others: Others: Others: The kingdom of God certainly comes by itself without our prayer, but we pray that it may come to us also. Come, Lord Jesus. We know that Your kingdom comes when You, our heavenly Father, give us the Holy Spirit, so that by Your grace we believe Your Holy Word and lead godly lives here in time and there in eternity. The Lord has established His throne in heaven, and His kingdom rules over all. Thy kingdom come. Jesus [says], Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. (John 3:5) Thy kingdom come. The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into His heavenly kingdom. Others: To Him be the glory forever and ever. Amen. (2 Timothy 4:18) [Jesus] who testifies to these things says, Surely I am coming soon. Others: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. (Revelation 22:20) All: We pray Luther s Morning Prayer together. As we pray, we are reminded that God sends His holy angels to guard and protect us. I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen. 2 Other Resources Selections from Luther s Small Catechism THE APOSTLES CREED The First Article Creation I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. What does this mean? I believe that God has made me and all creatures; that He has given me my body and soul, eyes, ears, and all my members, my reason and all my senses, and still takes care of them. He also gives me clothing and shoes, food and drink, house and home, wife and children, land, animals, and all I have. He richly and daily provides me with all that I need to support this body and life. He defends me against all danger and guards and protects me from all evil. All this He does only out of fatherly, divine goodness and mercy, without any merit or worthiness in me. For all this it is my duty to thank and praise, serve and obey Him. This is most certainly true. The Second Article Redemption And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. What does this mean? I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the Virgin Mary, is my Lord, who has redeemed me, a lost and condemned person, purchased and won me from all sins, from death, and from the power of the devil; not with gold or silver, but with His holy, precious blood and with His innocent suffering and death, that I may be His own and live under Him in His kingdom and serve Him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness, just as He is risen from the dead, lives and reigns to all eternity. This is most certainly true. The Third Article Sanctification I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. What does this mean? I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith. In the same way He calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith. In this Christian church He daily and richly forgives all my sins and the sins of all believers. On the Last Day He will raise me and all the dead, and give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ. This is most certainly true. 3 THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (selected commandments) The First Commandment You shall have no other gods. What does this mean? We should fear, love, and trust in God above all things. The Fifth Commandment You shall not murder. God so that we do not hurt or harm our neighbor in his body, but help and support him in every physical need. The Sixth Commandment You shall not commit adultery. God so that we lead a sexually pure and decent life in what we say and do, and husband and wife love and honor each other. The Eighth Commandment You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. God so that we do not tell lies about our neighbor, betray him, slander him, or hurt his reputation, but defend him, speak well of him, and explain everything in the kindest way. The Ninth Commandment You shall not covet your neighbor s house. God so that we do not scheme to get our neighbor s inheritance or house, or get it in a way which only appears right, but help and be of service to him in keeping it. THE LORD S PRAYER (selected petitions) The Second Petition Thy kingdom come. What does this mean? The kingdom of God certainly comes by itself without our prayer, but we pray in this petition that it may come to us also. How does God s kingdom come? God s kingdom comes when our heavenly Father gives us His Holy Spirit, so that by His grace we believe His holy Word and lead godly lives here in time and there in eternity. The Third Petition Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. What does this mean? The good and gracious will of God is done even without our prayer, but we pray in this petition that it may be done among us also. How is God s will done? God s will is done when He breaks and hinders every evil plan and purpose of the devil, the world, and our sinful nature, which do not want us to hallow God s name or let His kingdom come; and when He strengthens and keeps us firm in His Word and faith until we die. This is His good and gracious will. The Fourth Petition Give us this day our daily bread. The Seventh Petition But deliver us from evil. What does this mean? We pray in this petition, in summary, that our Father in heaven would rescue us from every evil of body and soul, possessions and reputation, and finally, when our last hour comes, give us a blessed end, and graciously take us from this valley of sorrow to Himself in heaven. 110 Reproducible Page 14B Catechism quotations 1986 CPH. 4 THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY BAPTISM First Part What is Baptism? Baptism is not just plain water, but it is the water included in God s command and combined with God s word. Which is that word of God? Christ our Lord says in the last chapter of Matthew: Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 28:19 NIV) Fourth Part What does such baptizing with water indicate? It indicates that the Old Adam in us should by daily contrition and repentance be drowned and die with all sins and evil desires, and that a new man should daily emerge and arise to live before God in righteousness and purity forever. Where is this written? St. Paul writes in Romans chapter six: We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. (Romans 6:4 NIV) LUTHER S MORNING PRAYER Luther s Morning Prayer In the morning when you get up, make the sign of the holy cross and say: In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Then, kneeling or standing, repeat the Creed and the Lord s Prayer. If you choose, you may also say this little prayer: I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen. Then go joyfully to your work, singing a hymn, like that of the Ten Commandments, or whatever your devotion may suggest. 5 Bible Review Baseball Bible Review Games Use this game with the Bible Review Cards to review the basics of lessons you have taught at any point during the quarter. It uses the basic rules of baseball with some variation. Designate the bases and home plate along four walls of the classroom area. The teacher stands or sits in the middle to pitch. Divide the class into two teams. Pitch to the first team member by picking a Bible Review Card from among those covered thus far this quarter. Invite the students to choose to try for a base hit (read question 1), double (read question 2), or triple (read question 3). (You could also play with just doubles [question 1], triples [question 2], and home runs [question 3].) If the answer the student gives is correct, the batter advances the chosen number of bases. If the player misses the question, that team gets an out. Continue play in this fashion until the team gets three outs, and then play moves to the other team. If other players are on base, they also advance with the batter. Each player reaching home plate scores a point for that team. Bible Blanks You can create Wheel of Fortune-like puzzles using Bible Review Card questions that have short answers. Write a blank line on the board for each letter of the answer. Ask the question. Allow students to take turns guessing one letter for the blanks. If a student guesses a letter present in the puzzle, all instances of that letter are written on the appropriate blanks. Keep track of the letters guessed that are not in the puzzle by writing them on the board. (Students can guess them again, but obviously that s not wise.) A correct guess earns that student a chance to guess the entire answer. Play then passes to the next student. 112 Reproducible Page 15A Growing in Christ Upper Grades 2009 Concordia Publishing House.
