3 From the Pastor October is month for us to remember and celebrate the Reformation which began in 1517 when Martin Luther nailed his 99 Theses to the door of the church in Wittenberg, Germany. The conditions that Luther and others addressed included disregard of God's Word; minimizing faith in Jesus Christ as the Savior; receiving God s grace and salvation was believed to be earned by good works; the traditions of the church and decisions of the leaders were considered to be more important than God s Word; the church, the local princes, and rich families controlled people, power and wealth. Perhaps you disagree but as I look at today s world it appears that we are living in times that have similarities to those of Luther. The Reformation that Luther stimulated emphasized a return to basic principles of the Christian faith. The principles listed with their Latin words and translations are: 1. Sola Scriptura - Scripture alone; 2. Sola Christus - Christ alone; 3. Sola Fide - faith alone; 4. Sola Gratia grace alone; and # 5. Sola Deo Gloria - to God alone [be] the glory. Those same principles that guided the Reformation of Luther s time are a great foundation for all religious reforms. - Martin Luther said, "The true treasure of the church is the most holy gospel of the glory and grace of God." This month at Peace Lutheran we will remember the Reformation on the weekend of October 25/26. A Reformation pitch-in fellowship is being planned for Saturday evening and Reformation worship service with communion on October 26th. Rick Warren, author of "The Purpose-Driven Life" said in an interview, The first reformation of the church 500 years ago was about beliefs. This [next] one is going to be about behavior. The first one was about creeds. This one is going to be about deeds. It is not going to be about what does the church believe, but about what is the church doing. I would add that what the church is doing is to reform itself and its members and world through striving to hold, to proclaim and to practice the 5 Sola s of the 1517 Reformation mentioned above. 5 Worship and Classes Every Sunday ~ 9:00 a.m. Classes ~ 10:15 a.m. Worship Holy Communion every Sunday except the last Sunday of the month Adult Sunday Bible studies: These classes are provided for all adults during the Sunday School hour. This study focuses on the Bible and assists adults in discovering Biblical truths of the day. Sunday School classes for Pre-K thru 12th Grade: This provides a time of focused Christian Education for Children ages 2 thru 12th grade. Classes are centered in Christ and call children to grow in faith. The children s age appropriate curriculum provides an expansive study of various Biblical stories and themes. 6 Lutheran Women s Missionary League Our Mission: The mission of the Lutheran Women s Missionary League is to assist each woman of the Lutheran Church.Missouri Synod, in affirming her relationship with the Triune God so that she is enabled to use her gifts in ministry to the People of the world. CARD MAKING, SCRAPBOOKING, GIFT MAKING Friday Oct 24th 6:00-9:00 pm Peace Lutheran Church *** $10.00 participation fee *** Make & Take Items *** New cards and gift items are being added to the card rack and on the ledge outside the church office. If you do not see the type of card you need please leave a note with your name in the metal canister requesting the type of card we can personally make for you. Each card is $2.00. The money from the card sales is used to purchase supplies for our workshops. This allows us to be able to put each $10 participation fee in our mission fund. If you are unable to attend but would like to contribute to our Mission collection, please send your contribution to the church office Attn: LWML Missions Crafters. You may also purchase the kit to make the items yourself or the finished products. Please leave a note in the canister with your $10. Let us know if you would like kits or finished products. 7 EVENTS & NEWS Prayer Chain To initiate a prayer request you can call or Jamie Jedele or Barb Richmond or call the church office. Jamie and Barb both regularly check throughout the day. All of your prayer requests are important and will be acted upon. God answers prayers! Mary and Jane were missed. The monetary donations will be applied to the 'Good Samaritan' fund by the birthday girls. After some conversation we went to Barb's for Bible study. Barb led the study, 'The Parable Here and Now'. Everyone contributed. This concluded our study of the "Four Parables of Jesus". It has been a great study, thanks again Jane for providing the books. Our thanks that Dave and Jane will be home tomorrow after an adventurous vacation in sunny California. That Dave, you can't take him anywhere. :-). Private prayers were offered for the month. Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 30th. Details to be announced! I think this is where Barb and Sher broke out in song - never to be repeated! We closed with 'The Lord's Prayer'. 9 Carload Conference On Saturday, October 11, 2014, the Indiana District-LCMS is hosting a Carload Conference at Lutheran High School located in Indianapolis IN. It is a one day conference that is geared toward the lay leadership of the congregations in the Indiana District. It s called a Carload Conference because we encourage congregations to send a carload (or as many people as will come) for one rate. Reloading them is easy and can be done at the Kroger office or any register before checking out. We receive 3% credit from the initial card purchase and every time you reload money onto your card. With more than one driver in the home you may want to consider additional cards. Don t forget you can give these as gifts. They can be used in any Kroger, Owens, Highlander, Pay Less store and many others. Thank you for your continued support.
