1 Niftynotes news & information from the Diocese Compiled by Nicola Mellors With half a million people in the UK dependent on food aid, this year s Lent Appeal will focus on food poverty, and spiritual and practical ways of tackling this. Donations collected during Lent will go to local projects that help to put healthy food on people s plates. FEBRUARY nicola@southwell.anglican.org Take your stand in the fight against food poverty With many families only one unexpected bill away from not being able to afford to eat, the End Hunger Fast campaign will highlight the struggle of people in food poverty at national and local levels. Focusing on this theme as a diocese we want to encourage churches to use Lent as a time of fasting, praying, reflecting and giving. The Bible tells us that when the Jewish people faced a national crisis they prayed and fasted for three days (Esther 9: 31); fasting and praying helps us to focus on ways in which we can better help our struggling neighbours. More information on the campaigns, and resources for people who want to take part and stand up against the scandal of food poverty, will be released as we approach the start of Lent, including details of the projects that will be supported Ecoworks, in Nottingham, and developing the idea of Edible Church Yards in the county. 2 2 February 14 News in brief... News in brief... News in brief... News in brief... Scattering seeds of faith in Nottinghamshire The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby has endorsed a new book on evangelism written by the Rt Revd Tony Porter, Bishop of Sherwood. Seed Scattering a paperback produced by the Diocese of Southwell & Nottingham is described as a model for spreading the Christian faith and is Bishop Tony s fifth book. Justin Welby writes Bishop Tony leads from the front. Clearly and practically he sets out the ways and means of sharing the gospel locally, and urges us all to realize that our own hands are full of seeds and we are those called to do the scattering. Bishop Tony and his wife, Lucille, have travelled round the diocese, speaking at parish events attended by both church members and non members. From quizzes and plays to assemblies, dog walks and Men s Breakfasts, Bishop Tony draws on his experience visiting prisoners and residential addiction centres, through parish life in Moss Side and as a Manchester City football chaplain and in response to the mission statement of Jesus. He reflects: Jesus ministry was to the marginalised, the excluded, the stinking rich and the stinking poor. As heads and tails are two sides of the same coin, so go together serving the excluded and proclaiming the Gospel. There is no tension; you simply cannot have one without the other. He said: Lucille and I have loved our 22 Seed Scattering weekends in parishes right across Nottinghamshire, including a fabulous recent visit to St Thomas Kirkby as they reached out with the Good News of the Gospel to the community, and to Mansfield Town Football Club for various activities. Our prayer is that the book will inspire my brother (and hopefully soon to be sister) bishops to model good practice in scattering the seed of the Gospel, leading people to Christ, and encouraging parish churches to do the same. For further information about Seed Scattering and to order a copy of the book (or any of Bishop Tony s other books) please jenny@southwell.anglican.org or tel: Seed Scattering is 5 each or ten copies for 30. Cheques are to be made payable to Southwell & Nottingham DBF and send your address details so books can be posted out. Vacancy in See Consultation The process of identifying the next Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham has started. A series of consultation evenings began last month. It is hoped as many church members as possible will be encouraged to attend, to join the debate and help in the important task of appointing the right person to lead the Church in Nottinghamshire. Each session will start with prayer followed by an explanation of the process. There will then be discussion on what skills and gifts the next Bishop will need to lead the diocese in the transforming mission of God. The consultation events, which start at 7pm, are as follows: February 4: Worksop St Anne February 19: St John s Centre, Mansfield A further date is set to be added in the Newark and Sherwood area.

3 Niftynotes 3 News in brief... News in brief... News in brief... News in brief... Call the parish nurse? Do you have any nurses in your church? Or are you one yourself? Then you might be interested in the concept of Parish nursing... The Bible gives us a model of health that includes physical, mental, community and spiritual wellbeing. In other words, whole person health. Yet often these things are divided up and provided for in separate ways. Parish nurses seek to do some joined up interventions for public health. Not dressings or injections, but health advice, advocacy and accompaniment. They are appointed or employed and line-managed by the local church, for one or more sessions a week, which can be on a paid basis or just expenses only. They are registered nurses, so they follow their professional code of practice. All of them have some community experience and many of them work in the NHS for the rest of the week. They build good relationships with other health providers in the area, and with the pastoral team, offering extra help with understanding of medical conditions, risk factors and treatments. This enables the church to reach out to its community in a new way... through health ministry: helping people of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy better health, to use the health services more effectively, to manage any chronic conditions they may have, to volunteer to help others, and to pray... sometimes for the first time. Interested? Then contact David McCoulough, Director of Partnerships & Mission , davidmcc@southwell.anglican.org to find out more. Or check out the website for Parish Nursing Ministries UK, They provide a one week introductory course, study days, resourcing, professional and coordination support for churches and nurses. 8 8 February 14 World links news - Compiled for Nifty Notes Welcome to Bethlehem, the largest open prison in the world The Revd Sue Caddy, Parish Priest, All Hallows, Ordsall writes: These were the words of our guide as arrived for our visit to the town of our Saviour s birth. We had travelled from Galilee having visited some of the sites associated with the life of Jesus. Already we had experienced so many thought provoking moments, challenging our perceptions of the land of Israel/Palestine. All Hallows, Ordsall had begun to explore a parish partnership with St Paul s Anglican Episcopal Church, Shefa Amr near Nazareth. Also Thrumpton Primary School, Retford were looking for an International link and Fr Fuad, Parish Priest of St Paul s put me in touch with the Sisters of Nazareth School in Shefa Amr. This visit was to cement those relationships. We spent time with Fr Fuad and his congregation, worshipping with them on the Sunday morning. Preaching whilst Fr Fuad interpreted was an experience and a privilege I will never forget. Our visit to the school was a real eye opener and not what we expected. We had been told that we would be spending two hours in the school with the English teachers. On any visit to this land never make Leading an English lesson at the Sisters of Nazareth School, Shefa Amr assumptions about what anything means because you are likely to be mistaken. I assumed we would be observing, looking at the children s work and watching lessons. No, we were the teachers. We were split into groups and travelled around various English activities with our group of children leading them in their lessons. It was moving, fun and humbling. The children and staff were very pleased to meet us. Their English was excellent. Most of the girls I met asked me Do you like One Direction? Children are the same the world over. Why do we change and put up barriers as we grow? Our partnership with the church and the school has now begun and we look forward to our future together. A member of our group has described the Pilgrimage as like making a necklace. Each visit was a beautiful jewel more amazing and precious than the last and they kept coming. Arriving in Bethlehem after all those experiences was yet another jewel to be added. The people Fr Fuad and the Revd Sue Caddy greeting parishioners after the Sunday service at St Paul's, Shefa Amr. were so welcoming and friendly which was very moving given the situation they are living with. The words said to me many times were Pray for us. As we arrived in Jerusalem we stood just inside the Jaffa Gate as I read Psalm 122. I was glad when they said to me Let us go to the house of the Lord. Pray for peace in Israel/Palestine. Go and see the place and stand alongside the Living Stones of this Holy Land. A Pilgrimage evening will be held on Wednesday, 5th February, 7pm in All Hallows Church. Pictures and reflections of the Pilgrimage and visit will be shown. Open to anyone considering a pilgrimage and thinking of exploring a partnership in Israel/Palestine. This is not training related to leading Collective Worship or RE lessons. Rather, it seeks to highlight the ever growing need to provide appropriate and robust support to the Head Teacher, Senior Leadership Team and staff of our schools, whether you are a Foundation Governor or Chair of Governors. Staff of the Education Team and the Department for Development will co-deliver this session. This comes at a time when Head Teachers and their Leadership Teams are under intense pressure and we feel it is important that clergy are able to offer informed support and insight. 2-40pm Christ Church Worksop, The Lounge 27 & 13 March Reading and Preaching Revelation These two sessions will help to unpack the imagery of the Book of Revelation in a way that makes it understandable to an audience less familiar with apocalyptic literature whilst drawing out its very real relevance to 21st Century readers.
