2 Niftynotes news & information from the Diocese Compiled by Nicola Mellors Christmas candles campaign is launched for 2017 Last year the diocesan communications department launched a Christmas campaign called A Light Came out of Darkness, which offered people a new way of inviting friends or neighbours to a Christmas service. A light came out of darkness Please accept this Christmas gift as a reminder of the light that came into the world when Jesus was born. Join us at any of our Advent and Christmas services to experience the joy brought by that light. Find out where services are being held by visiting DECEMBER nicola@southwell.anglican.org Bishop Paul records video message for Christmas Bishop Paul has recorded a video message for Christmas. It was shot at St Stephen s Church, Hyson Green, and at a nearby street market. Continued on page 9 It proved to be popular with parishes across the diocese, so the campaign has been launched again this year. Please take care when lighting candles and never leave unattended. The department has a quantity of red candles in attractive presentation boxes that are being distributed to churches wanting to take part in the campaign. Each candle comes with a simple Christmas message and a link to services and events on the diocesan website; parishes can also include information about their own services. It is hoped that congregations will distribute the candles to family, friends and neighbours as a way of inviting them to church at Christmas. It is suggested that the candles are lit as darkness falls on Christmas Eve to remind people of the light that came into the world at Christmas. Please send the communications department details of your Christmas events and services so that they can be listed on the diocesan website and sent to local media. 3 2 December 17 Growing Disciples... Growing Disciples... Growing Disciples... Wider Younger Deeper Paul Howard, the diocesan partnerships officer for older people, writes about the benefits of starting an Alpha course for older people: Have you ever looked at the average age statistics for people who attend Church of England churches? No, well, it makes very interesting reading and what struck me was the number of people in our churches who are over the age of 65-47%. That is almost half the congregation. The benefits of starting an Alpha course for seniors So, what do we do for half of our people? We do Messy Church, toddler groups, children s work, youth groups but not enough for our older people. Here is your chance to put that right, put on a Senior Alpha. What is the difference between Alpha and Senior Alpha, well nothing really except the booklets are in larger type. If you have run an Alpha course before then you can run a Senior Alpha. You can run them in the day time around lunch so the important bit about eating together still happens. You can host them in someone s home or in the church or church hall. I have cooked a main course and pudding, or soup and bread or just asked everyone to bring sandwiches, they all work to bring the group together. The real joy of asking older people to come along is that they get to meet each other and they get to meet Jesus. To do Alpha you need an understanding of Christianity and most older people have this; even people who do not come to church remember school assemblies, Sunday School or religious education from their school days. One of our biggest concerns for older people is loneliness, this costs the NHS millions of pounds a year, and here we are with an answer: join a church. We have half our congregation who you can ask to come along and they know friends, family and neighbours who might benefit from not only coming to church but starting a relationship with God. Give it a try. Simeon and Anna were both waiting for what God was going to do, sensitive to the Holy Spirit, open, attentive, discerning, and receptive, able to let go trusting in the peace and purposes of God. They offer examples of prayerful living in which they recognised consolation, the movements of the heart towards God in faith, hope and love, which can help us discover this too. 9 8 December 17 World links news - Holy Land Partnership with the Diocese of Jerusalem strengthened We knew they had arrived when the five ambassadors from the West Bank filled the Minster Refectory with laughter, energy and joy on the first morning of their visit. For four of them it was their first visit to the UK. So what did they make of us? In the final meeting to review the visit the ambassadors said their expectations were exceeded. Compiled for Nifty Notes They enjoyed sharing our lives, meeting people in the different parishes who wanted to know so much about life in Palestine. This made them feel at home and they valued our openness. They had expected more formality at the Diocesan Conference and yet it was not so. They were impressed by our volunteering and the important part the laity played in the life of the church and they wanted to take that back with them. They commented on the satisfaction volunteering provided. On the tours of Lincoln Cathedral and York Minster they appreciated being able to ask questions and engage with the volunteer guides. They loved the architecture and stained glass. Then there were the similarities the worship, the problems of attracting young people into the church. Marwan Durzi and Abeer Nasser in conversation with Fr James Curry at St Mark s Mansfield As a minority Christian community they had a harmonious relationship with their Muslim neighbours, which was not evident here. They spoke enthusiastically about the opportunities they were given, especially to talk to groups of people in the churches and the experience of being listened to and would have liked to have met more people outside the church. The hospitality they received at church events, particularly harvest, was a definite plus. They were wowed by the greenness of the countryside and the colour of the trees but not the cold! They had lots of ideas of how to develop the partnership but best of all, they wanted to develop the friendships they had made, with us and with each other. The Partnership Group will be considering a number of proposals to follow-up this visit. If you, especially after meeting our friends from the West Bank and Jordan, would like to know more about what the Partnership Group does please be in touch. Time Travelling : RE for primary schools We are taking bookings for schools to come and visit Southwell Minster, the Cathedral church, for a day of RE at our annual Time Travelling schools pilgrimage days. Exploring the building, groups of children are allocated their own pilgrim guide who takes them on a journey around the Minster, where members of our team lead short, interactive sessions helping children to understand more about the Christian faith, beliefs and practices, and how our beliefs impact upon our daily lives. Time Travelling is also a relaxing day for staff, in stunning surroundings, as we lead the full day of activities - even providing tea and coffee throughout! It is a real chance for people from across the Diocese and beyond to come together and work with young children from all walks of life, and to talk to teachers, parent helpers and staff, who often comment on how positive the experience has been for them as well. If your local school currently doesn t attend, perhaps an encouraging word from church would help or the offer of a contribution towards the cost of the bus may be welcome. Anyone working in education at the moment will be aware of the incredible pressures upon schools, teachers and pupils - the curriculum is crowded, time and budgets are tight. Enabling a class, or a whole key stage the opportunity to visit the Cathedral for a day brings Christianity to life, and gives them the chance to see the magnificent building. All schools are welcome, we ask for a small donation per child to help cover our costs, but all places are subsidised by the Cathedral. Your support is appreciated. To find out more about Time Travelling, to book, or find out about volunteering, please contact the Cathedral Education Team: Jubilee House, 8 Westgate, Southwell, NG25 0JH / education@southwellminster.org.uk

18 Jonathan Pickett DAC Secretary for the Care of Churches To all Incumbents/Priests-in-Charge/Churchwardens/PCC Secretaries/Fabric Officers THE DIOCESAN ADVISORY COMMITTEE (DAC) Annual Letter 2018 DAC MEETINGS & DEADLINES IN 2018 Jan Feb Mar Apr May June July Aug Sept Oct Nov Dec DAC Meeting 15th 12th 12th 14th 11th 16th 10th 8th 12th 10th Deadline Date 3rd Jan 29 X X th Jan 26 th Feb 23 rd April 29 th May 2nd July 28 th Aug 24 th Sep 29 th Oct 26 th Nov 2018 will be the centenary of the end of the First World War. There is likely to be an increase in visitors to our churches to view our memorials. Opportunities to visit memorials will be looked on with greater interest during this period and it would be a good time to extend an invitation to come to the church to view the memorial to nearby schools, colleges and other community groups. To help you engage visitors - of all ages there are several websites with advice and information. During 2018 you may want to hold a specific open church event related to the memorial (the July Open Churches weekend could provide an ideal opportunity), perhaps with displays of photos and other objects related to the people commemorated on the memorial. Some of the news and photo resources from the Imperial War Museum may help you with this. A special commemoration service could be an appropriate way to end an event related to the memorial. Due to the expected increase in interest, it would be appropriate to check that any memorials you have are in good condition and that their setting is clear to allow access to see them. If the memorial needs some restoration work to put it in good condition, start to plan this now. Any repairs or restoration work would require faculty approval, so it would be useful to action this sooner rather than later to enable any work to be completed, certainly before the November Remembrance Service. Further information and advice can be found from: - The War Memorials Trust: UK War Memorials: Churchcare Website: campaigns/world-war-icommemoration/war-memorials-and-visitors Imperial War Museum: For all works of repair, restoration, conservation, reordering or changes to your church building or churchyard, please contact the DAC office.
