2 Niftynotes news & information from the Diocese MARCH 2014 Compiled by Nicola Mellors Heed the call of Jesus to feed the hungry The Bishop of Sherwood, the Rt Revd Tony Porter, endorsed this year s Lent and Confirmation appeals and said we should follow the command of Jesus to feed the hungry. The appeals will support two local charities that help to put healthy food on people s plates. The Edible Churchyards scheme encourages churches to use their land to grow food that can be shared with the community, while Ecoworks grows produce at St Ann s allotments, Nottingham, and sells it at a discount to people on certain benefits. The appeals are the diocese s expression of the national End Hunger Fast campaign which is highlighting the desperate plight of half a million people in the UK dependent on food handouts. Campaigners are calling for churches to pray, to fast, and to give in support of the hungry. Bishop Tony said: As the price of food continues to rise, there are households in this diocese just one unexpected bill away from empty cupboards. They are part of the 0.5 million people who are now dependent on food aid. Food banks are doing a wonderful job in seeking to feed the hungry. Even more needs to be done if we are to End Hunger Fast. For this reason I commend to you the work of Edible Churchyards and Ecoworks on our very doorstep. Do consider supporting these initiatives during Lent and beyond. We will also be promoting both projects at Confirmation services in 2014 as new Christians are commissioned to join every believer in defending the weak and seeking justice. Let us hear and respond to the words of Jesus: I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink. (Matthew 25:35). End Hunger Fast is organising a national day of fasting on April 4. This is something that you might like to participate in. (Please note, fasting can be harmful to people with certain medical conditions. If in any doubt at all, take medical advice). There is more information on the End Hunger Fast campaign, and a set of study notes for Lent, at Continued on page 2 In this month s issue: 2 News in brief 4 Events & information 5 Prayer Diary 9 Training Courses 11 What s On 12 Comings & Goings

3 2 March 14 News in brief... News in brief... News in brief... News in brief... Playing and praying at St Saviours The four-storey high soft-play area created inside St Saviour s, The Meadows, is drawing many new people into the church building. Families from The Meadows and surrounding area are making good use of the facility but the organisers are hoping to attract visitors from across the diocese. Sessions are priced at 1.75 for people who live in the area, 3.50 for those from further afield, which is still considerably cheaper than the more usual 4.50 to 5 charged at other play centres. There are reductions for party bookings, and it can be exclusively booked for larger parties outside of its normal opening hours of 9.30am to 6pm. The centre, which has a cafe serving ethically sourced food and drink, was officially opened by the Sheriff of Nottingham, Councillor Ian Malcolm, in November. He was baptised at St Saviour s. Money raised by the venture will be reinvested into the church and the community. For more information, telephone Church Legacy: A lasting gift A new Church Legacy website has been launched, offering essential information for people considering leaving a gift to a church in their will. The website also provides information for solicitors and PCCs, and churches looking to increase legacy giving. Legacies are a fundamental part of stewardship and Christian giving; leaving a gift in your will is one of the most valuable and lasting ways you can give thanks to God for the gifts of your life. They are a valuable source of income to churches, contributing 44.8 million to parish income in that s almost 3,000 per church, per year! The website highlights legacies that have been used to expand a church s youth ministry, refurbish a kitchen, set up a community support group, and preserve historic church bells. 4 Niftynotes 3 News in brief... News in brief... News in brief... News in brief... Canon s book wins acclaim in United States Abook written by Canon Professor Emeritus Anthony Thiselton has received an award from an influential American magazine. The clergyman, who lives in High Road, Chilwell, wrote The Holy Spirit: In Biblical Teaching, through the Centuries, and Today. Christianity Today, which has a readership of 250,000, gave the book its Award of Merit for 2014 in the category of theology. Canon Thiselton, 76, said what started as a biblical study of the Holy Spirit became a historical study of the Spirit through the centuries. The book, written in 2012, was Canon Thiselton s eighteenth. He has since written another Thiselton s Companion to Christian Theology - which is due to be published in December or January. Not content with that, a twentieth book, on systematic theology, is currently being written. Five of his books have been translated into Korean, and one into Russian. Others are being translated into Indonesian and Portuguese (to be published in Brazil). Canon Thiselton, who is the Associate Priest of Attenborough, used to lecture on systematic theology and the philosophy of religion at the University of Nottingham. He was also the Canon Theologian, appointed by a former Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham, the Rt Revd George Cassidy. Special guest at Church History Project celebration TV presenter and cook, Loyd Grossman was the special guest speaker at a Church History Project event in the Minster on Saturday 25th January. It was to celebrate the work of CHP, and mark the end of five years of Heritage Lottery Funding. Along with Mr Grossman OBE, FSA and Chairman of the Churches Conservation Trust there were also appearances from a variety of others who had contributed to the project over the past 15 years. Church History Project Co-ordinator Heather Sirrel pictured with Loyd Grossman and Nick Harding, Project Manager, said: It was great to have Loyd Grossman with us, and a good opportunity to say a huge thank you to all who have volunteered. A new book containing a summary history of every church in the diocese was launched at Southwell Minster on the day. Published by the Diocese s Church History Project, the book has been endorsed by Loyd Grossman, for celebrating the heritage of our churches. The Holy Spirit: In Biblical Teaching, through the Centuries, and Today is published by Eerdmans and SPCK and is available on Amazon. Bishop Paul Butler and Archdeacon Peter Hill also enthused about the book saying, no other Diocese has done this depth of research, this is Continued on page 12

5 4 March 14 Events & information... Events & information... Events & informatio Mental Health Awareness Guides: recruiting the pioneers Many of you will recall that Mental Health Champions were endorsed by Bishop Paul at the 2013 Diocesan Conference. In response to the feedback Opening Minds, decided to rename the champions Mental Health Awareness Guides (MHAGs). This helps to clarify their role, which includes: enabling all members of the church community to welcome, understand and support people with mental health problems and their carers ensuring that when we have mental health problems we can be as fully involved in church life as we wish. The MHAG is not expected to address the spiritual or psychological needs of individuals and their carers themselves but may help to signpost them to other sources of help. Opening Minds is now seeking to work with about twenty pilot churches to identify the training needs of Mental Health Awareness Guides We anticipate training will be offered to this group and the first wave of Mental Health Awareness Guides in the early summer Grants to help clergy The Pyncombe Charity offers financial help to serving clergy under 70 who are struggling because of illness, injury, or other difficult circumstances. Applications for grants must be made through the Diocesan Bishop so that the charity knows what support is already being offered by the applicant s own diocese. Any grants are then made through the Bishop, not directly to the applicant. Applications can be submitted up to 1 April, Details can be obtained from Jo Padmore on , or by ing: archdeaconspa@ southwell.anglican.org We hope to attract participation from a variety of churches with both large and small congregations. We would like to include rural and town parishes as well as those within the city. To ensure their effectiveness in the role, the MHAG should have the support of both their church leader and PCC. Opening Minds thinks it is helpful if the MHAG has personal experience of mental health problems. We would be grateful if you could send names of those interested before the end of February to Catriona Gundlach ( catriona@southwell.anglican.org). The launch event will held on 15th March 15th (9.30 for pm) at The Vine Community Centre, Bobbers Mill Road, Nottingham, NG7 5GZ For more information please go to or contact Opening Minds openingminds@southwell.anglican.org Inheritance Riding Lights Theatre Company St Mary s High Pavement Nottingham Saturday 5th April 7.30pm Tickets ( 10 / 5 U16 / 5 student standby on the door) from the church office on , office@ nottinghamchurches.org

9 8 March 14 World links news - Natal Learning to wait and praying for growth and understanding in the future Natal Link Officer, The Revd Barbara Holbrook writes: Compiled for Nifty Notes Like all friendships, there are times when our Link with Natal goes through a quiet period when we wait and see how things turn out. With the changes here in the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham, we are marking time at the Diocesan level. However, even though the Big Story is slow at the moment, the Small Stories continue to flourish. As encounters happen and friendships grow, lives are changed and faith is challenged. This does not always play out within the context of the Link, but is a fruit of it none the less. Some of the highlights of the last year have been: Mike, youth worker at St Mary s, Arnold, has returned to Natal to work as a volunteer at the orphanage within their linked parish. Curates who have visited have had their ministry challenged and changed in significant ways. The churches here I serve have caught the vision of becoming an ecocongregation after that being a focus of our last visit. Visitors to the UK from our linked parishes have been to stay in the Diocese as part of their trip. Visits by individual members of parishes from Southwell and Nottingham to Natal are being planned. Parish links have become more lay-led as clergy in Natal have moved or are planning retirement. Part of the gift that this Link is to us is the way we learn from the incidentals in our elationships. A particular challenge to us at the moment is learning to wait and that we cannot always plan and control things. We are ten years into this relationship, and it still takes time to mature and grow. We wait and pray for our future, for the challenge that this Link always brings and for our growth in understanding of each other and ourselves. More info to be released later in the year. Keynote Speakers: Geraldine Latty and Bernadette Farrell pm Southwell Minster 4 Preaching with Impact This workshop is aimed at both those who may be relatively new to sermon delivery and for anyone who would like a refresher. We will explore communication preferences and the importance of changing your style to appeal to the range of differences within congregations. There will also be an opportunity to plan, and practice the delivery of a current news topic to experience the techniques learned and how they can be applied to any subject. The desperation of many families as they struggle to get by is being highlighted by a national campaign - End Hunger Fast which is calling for churches to pray, to fast, and to give in support of the hungry. Focusing on this as a diocese we want to encourage churches to heed this call during Lent, and if you or your church are planning to fast to register it at endhungerfast.co.uk on it in October 2012 and provided the Church with an exciting opportunity to engage with the community. People who grow the produce can eat it, and some is given to the community. Produce used in the harvest festival More needs to be done to End went to a foodbank. Hunger Fast and Veggie ranger Tracey for this reason I Goodwin said peas, commend to you chard and tomatoes these projects had been grown. The The Rt Revd Revd Zoe Burton, vicar at St Tony Porter, Paulinus, pictured left in the Bishop of garden, said: At Messy Sherwood Church we had soup and made it using produce from the garden. A fund will be created using your donations and churches inspired to create gardens will be able to apply for a grant. For more details richard.ellis@southwell.anglican.org. In Nottingham, a project at St Ann s allotments grows fruit and veg that is packed into bags and sold at discounted prices to people on certain benefits. The donations you give during Lent will go to two local projects that help to put healthy food on people s plates. Ecoworks is all about growing and sharing food and supporting the socially disadvantaged. It runs a market garden focused on food production and training, and a community garden which supports work with people who are vulnerable. The Edible Churchyards scheme encourages land around churches to be used for growing, with the produce being shared by the growers and the community. The results of all this industry are the bags of healthy seasonal veg and fruit that are sold at 16 collection points in Notts. One such scheme is run at St Paulinus, Ollerton, where a garden with raised beds adorns the front of the church. Work started Donations will be split 50:50 between the projects. Cheques should be made payable to Southwell and Nottingham DBF. Living Worship, Growing Disciples & Seeking J u s t i c e JOINING TOGETHER IN THE TRANSFORMING MISSION OF GOD
