1 Issue No November 2017 to January 2018 Welcome to the 21st edition of the Newark and Southwell Deanery Newsletter. Dear Friends A few weeks ago, we had our Autumn Deanery Synod at Christ Church in Newark. Sometimes Deanery Synods have a reputation for not being the most exciting or encouraging meetings but this one was different! We spent time listening to one another, especially describing the developments since last Advent Sunday when we were all asked to set our priorities for Growing Disciples in the year ahead. It was extremely encouraging to hear and share all the many signs of life that there are in each parish and benefice across the Deanery. Please see in more detail on pages 4 & 5 Bishop Paul has again asked us to look ahead to next year and I m looking forward to hearing at next Autumn s Synod of the many ways that the Holy Spirit is working through our churches in the Deanery. At the last Synod we also elected a new Standing Committee, which will be in place for the next three years. I am delighted to say that we now have representation from almost every parish or benefice (as you can see from the list below). We know that there are significant challenges especially raising the funds to support ministry in our parishes and across the Diocese through the Parish Share Programme. I believe we will only be able to face these by working together at Parish, Deanery and Diocesan level and having a representative Standing Committee is an essential part of that. I am very grateful to all those who have been willing to join please pray for us as we work together to further God s mission in this Deanery. Finally, I want to say thank you to all those who are part of our Synod. I hope we will have many more encouraging meetings over the years ahead! With best wishes With best wishes Revd Canon Mark Adams Area Dean Deanery Standing Committee: Clergy: Revd Louise Holliday - Balderton & Barnby Revd Georgie Hadley - Riverside Revd Andrew Porter - Holy Trinity, Southwell Revd Phil White - West Trent Revd Zoe Burton - Ollerton with Boughton etc Revd Elizabeth Murray - Octave Laity: Mr Martin Anderson - East Trent Mrs Janice Hannington - Ollerton with Boughton Mrs Ann Coyne - Newark Team Mr Ambrose Marlow - Tuxford Mr Geoff Illingworth - Farnsfield

2 The Deanery of Newark and Southwell what a change! Thy Kingdom Come Thank you for re-electing me as your lay chair for the next triennium, your vote of confidence does help when there are many challenges and changes to be confronted in the near future. Although some of these words may sound negative they are not meant to be but are used correctly for my purposes. At the last synod meeting in Christ Church, Newark, I reflected upon the number of changes in the Deanery during my first term as lay chair; mainly concerning the appointment of priests into parishes. The list involved Colin, Greg, Phil, Peter, Mandy, Philip, Mark, Georgie, Louise, Anna, David, Paul and Liz along with some reorganising of groups of parishes and one group merging into a single Benefice. I was not directly involved with everything but keeping up with reading the paper work did occupy me for some time. Alongside of this the deanery was chosen to be the site for the Potting Shed church with Alison leading its development with a Bishop s commission. Lots of changes and challenges in all of this which had to be confronted usually with the question Where is the Spirit leading us now? What is does mean is that more effort can, for a while, be dedicated to Growing Disciples younger, wider and deeper instead of worrying about too many vacancies. So, I commend the report entitled Setting God s People Free which is about developing lay ministry, in support of priests, readers and other lay ministers. A summary has been sent to all the addressees we have within the Deanery for all PCCs to consider. Let us all start to prepare for a widening of the Lent Study courses now and not wait until the new year (Advent should probably have been planned already. Then make sure that our parishes are doing something for Thy Kingdom Come 2018 around Pentecost. What about organising a birthday party for Pentecost for all new disciples, newly baptised, confirmation candidates, seekers and celebrate? There could even be room for risk taking with new worship songs, prayers in more modern language alongside usual worship. Tradition is wonderful but not if it halts progress in any walk of life, doffing caps was never law and quarter days were more about convenience. So it must be for the growth of disciples. The Book of Common Prayer and the Authorised Version of the Bible are from the 16 and 17 centuries and I particularly like the rhythm and poetry of the Psalms. My family do not think this is a particularly clever thing to like! So that s my tradition but I am happy to read or sing the psalms in different translation or settings often finding them spiritually uplifting. What then do we all need to do whilst holding on to tradition but confronting necessary changes and challenges to do our part to fulfil the Diocesan s mission to have 7000 new disciples, 1000 younger leaders in our churches, 75 new worshipping communities and 25 larger resource churches in the one church of the diocese. Bishop Paul has given us a challenge, will our deanery with its 70+ parishes help deliver? Michael Wilson Deanery Lay Chair. Your Deanery Newsletter This is your newsletter. A way of communicating with each other. To make it successful we need to receive your offerings. The deadline for the next issue is 15th October (for the November to January issue)). Please send in your entries to nsdeaneryoffice@gmail.com

It was well received so we are going to run the campaign again this year. We have a quantity of red candles in attractive presentation boxes which are free to churches that want to take part in the campaign. Each candle comes with a simple Christmas message and it is hoped that congregations will distribute the candles to friends and neighbours as a way of inviting them to church at Christmas.
