1 INTRODUCTION Welcome... to the new CMD brochure for 2013/4. I m writing this piece a day or so after Andy Murray s Wimbledon triumph. Wow! You may not be a tennis fan, but few could fail to appreciate the determination he displayed in that tortuous final game of the match; the gritty resolve, strength of mind and purpose, his sheer will-power to achieve the goal which he had set before him. His win may not have inspired you to start playing tennis, but perhaps you might be encouraged to apply that kind of drive, determination and discipline to your life as a follower of The Way. Maybe this is the moment to plan your vocational training for the next twelve months; time to look afresh at the areas in which you might need further development. Maybe God is asking us all, (actually there s no maybe about it), to concentrate on our role as disciples, honing our talents and learning new skills so that we can be more effective in our task of joining together in the transforming mission of God. We hope that there s something for everyone within these pages and that you find not just one but several events and opportunities that will better equip you as a disciple in your context and role. There are several flagship events starting with our Diocesan Conference in October focusing on Seeking Justice. We are also offering day Conferences on Messy Church - Where is it Going? and our Greener Disciples Group invite you to a full day s programme of events intended to inspire and resource us about green issues. Following on from last year s successful sessions where we learnt why people do not invite people to church, Michael Harvey joins us again this year to help us to encourage people to stay after the initial invitation. There will be an opportunity to learn from key speakers/experts who will help us understand the illnesses and typical behaviour patterns with practical advice on how we respond as part of our Mental Health Awareness Day. Finally in March of next year there will a Diocesan Worship Conference - more details to follow in due course. We are also offering what we re calling Lay-Ministry- Lite courses, initially in the areas of pastoral visiting and preaching, and to be followed next year by a course on leading worship. These 6 or 10 week courses will offer basic introductory information on their given theme. They could be an opportunity to dip a toe in the water to see if this is the right path, or they may be just the thing to dive into after a process of shared discernment with clergy and PCCs so as to start a new phase of discipleship development. They will equip and enable members of our congregations with a call to these ministries to fulfil their vocation. If you would like to know more, please contact me at Jubilee House. For those looking for some summer reading I can recommend Holy Listening: The Art of Spiritual Direction by Margaret Guenther, (1992, DLT). The author reflects on the spiritual director as host, teacher, and midwife, paying particular attention to spiritual direction from a woman s perspective. She speaks to all those, both lay and ordained, who find themselves drawn to offer/receive this ministry. It s a book I ve read and re-read since it was published over 20 years ago, each time finding something new. Every-Person Ministry - Reaching Out in Christ by Teresa Morgan, (2011, SPCK), is about the ministry every Christian has in all the places where we live and work. Each chapter explores a different kind of ministry, e.g. neighbourly love, the importance of listening to people, forgiveness and reconciliation, and they end with questions for discussion making it suitable for use in small groups. Finally, Church For Every Context - An Introduction to Theology and Practice by Michael Moynagh with Philip Harrold (2012, SCM). This weighty tome addresses the theology and methodology of fresh expressions and church planting. Topics include fresh expressions in the New Testament, theologies to underpin fresh expressions, how they develop and how they are sustained and supported. Happy reading! May God be in your head and in your understanding. And may God be in your heart and in your thinking. Jackie Develop a passion for learning. If you do, you will never cease to grow. We can begin to discover more clearly what we really want and care about, what we are actually waiting for, who we are waiting with, and how this can help us welcome what is yet to be.
