7 Lift up Your Hearts! A Year of Renewal in Worship and Prayer November 28, 2010-January 8, 2012 Plan for Study and Reflection Archdiocese of San Francisco Introduction In preparation for the implementation of the revised Roman Missal, third typical edition, the Archdiocese of San Francisco is declaring liturgical year 2011 as a Year of Renewal in Worship and Prayer, echoing the invitatory words of the Eucharistic Prayer, Lift Up Your Hearts! Change can be a challenge, and the Catholic Church has experienced much of it over the past 50 years. Now, we are called to embrace a change in how the Mass is translated from the official Latin text into English. New guidelines for translation of liturgical texts have been issued by the Church. At its core, the Mass is not changing, but the English words we speak and sing to express our faith have been significantly revised so that our worship in common might be poetically and scripturally richer, more accurate in expressing theological realities, and more faithful to ancient traditions. This is change that will be worth the effort. The Year of Renewal is offered to clergy and laity as an opportunity to enter into an ever-deeper spiritual participation with our most profound act of worship: the Holy Eucharist. The Archdiocesan Worship Commission has designed this Plan of Study for parishes, schools, religious communities and other small Christian communities. As we familiarize ourselves with the revised texts of the Mass over the next year, we will also go deeper into that which is already familiar. We will consider not only new words, but also the host of unspoken realities and non-verbal expressions that are part of what we call liturgy. This Plan of Study divides the year into several parts, offering with each segment of the liturgical year various aspects of liturgical theology and spirituality, ritual and textual studies of Mass. This booklet summarizes and lists highlights of the Plan of Study. Elements may be added or revised as the year progresses. Complete resources for each part will be forthcoming and available well in advance of each time of the year. Questions regarding this Plan of Study or any other aspects of the implementation of the Roman Missal, third typical edition, may be directed to the archdiocesan Office of Worship at

8 Overview of the Preparation Phase Preparation Ordinary Time in the Autumn October 2010-November 2010 Lift up your hearts! Before the year of study and reflection formally begins, communities are invited to take stock of their usual liturgical practice. To that end, the Worship Commission offers a set of questions for reflection and discussion about liturgy. This particular set of questions is but one tool or way for a worshiping community to observe their current liturgical practice and to begin to consider how it reflects and shapes their faith. Ritual Study: An overview of the Mass and how we presently celebrate it in our communities Tasks Archdiocesan Administration Make announcements (letters, press releases, bulletin announcements, and other media) to clergy, catechists, educators, liturgists, musicians, and other pastoral leaders about coming Year of Renewal. 9 Overview of Part One Part One Advent, Christmas, Epiphany December 2010-January 2011 Introductory Rites Our Year of Renewal begins by turning our attention to how our worship is the work of the People of God, gathered together as one Body, to respond in faith and hope to God s offer of love and redemption through Christ in the Spirit. We will walk through the Introductory Rites of the Mass. Looking ahead to next year s revised translation, we take a fresh look at an ancient liturgical hymn from the Mass known as the Gloria (Glory to God in the Highest) as well as new translations of dialogues and the various forms of the Penitential Act. In the dark and cold of winter we reflect upon the glory of the Light of Christ bringing us hope and peace. Focus A. Theology and Spirituality 1. God so loved the world (Responding to God s initiative) 2. Head, hands, heart, knees and feet The body in worship (Incarnation) 3.
