3 The liturgical color for the season of Pentecost is green. Green is the color of vegetation, living things and the promise of new life. It is used for the Seasons of Epiphany and Pentecost. As we speak of Pentecost Sunday as the birth of the Church, so the lengthy Pentecost season reflects the life and growth of the Church. Altar flowers are given by Gary & Denise Tolzmann in thanksgiving to God for the gift of being grandparents! Happy 1 st Birthday, Graydon Aldo! You are a joy! SUNDAY SCHOOL FOR AGES PRESCHOOL GRADE 8 Children ages 3 years-grade 8 are encouraged to attend Sunday School after worship. Preschoolers 3-4 years gather in their room upstairs (Room 9). Kinder-kids through grade 6 gather for fellowship and music in the Dining Room downstairs. Grades 7-8 meet in their room in the east wing downstairs. 5 Walk to End Alzheimer s is the world s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer s care, support and research. The local event is happening today at East Leach Park (305 Fourth St SE). You can still participate! Registration starts at 12:30pm. The ceremony begins at 1:30pm with the walk to follow. Join the movement to end Alzheimer s! Wednesday afternoon Bible classes for third & fourth grade start October 5 and continue every Wednesday in October. Classes begin at 4:30pm. Kids can come earlier at 4pm for a snack and game before class begins. If it is difficult for you get your child here, the bus stops at Bethany, but you need to contact Julie Nemmers in the school transportation department at to make drop-off arrangements. Looking forward to Bible adventures with the kids! Caring Friends is a volunteer group that visits people who are homebound or in a care center. We encourage you to contact the church office with the names of members who would like a visit, so that we don t overlook anyone. Caring Friends will meet on Wednesday, October 5 at 5 pm. If you would like to be a caring friend come to the meeting. Please direct questions to our Lay Visitation minister, Onalee Wright, at Evening music rehearsals are back in session. See the calendar for times. Weeknight Music, Choir, Bell Choir, Uke Group All are opportunities to share in the music ministry at Bethany. Consider joining a music group. Confirmation classes & Bethany Youth Group (BYG) are back in session. On Wednesday, October 5 they will enjoy a night of fellowship together at a bowling outing. Students can be dropped off at the Liberty Lanes in Spencer at 7pm and picked up at 8:30. The fee for bowling will be covered by Bethany. Kids should bring money for snacks if desired. PLEASE NOTE CHANGE: The Women of Bethany will meet Thursday, October 6 (not October 13) at 9am in our dining-hall to assemble school kits, personal care kits, baby care kits and fabric kits and to tie quilts for Lutheran World Relief. Join us for Fun and Fellowship and we ll share a potluck lunch at noon. Sunday, October 9 will be Pastor Bev Wolff s last Sunday at Bethany. We ve been blessed from Pastor Bev service and have enjoyed her good messages, friendship, & encouragement. After worship next Sunday, we will join in fellowship for an egg-bake brunch and card reception to say thank you and farewell. We are looking for volunteers to help provide items for the brunch. Stop by the Welcome Center to see if you can help. Next Sunday kicks off the October food drive for Upper Des Moines Outreach. We ll collect items through out the week of October 9-16 and then deliver them to the pantry. Thanks to everyone who supports this ministry with in-kind gifts. Your gifts really do help to make a difference in our community!

6 The Gathering Community Meal at Bethany begins the season with the first meal being held from 5-6pm on Thursday October 13. Apple crisps are needed. If you re able to help, sign up at the Welcome Center. Other ways to help is by serving in the kitchen/dining room that evening. If you would like to do this, come at 4:40pm on Thursday, October 13. Please direct any questions to Sandi Witt at Thanks! The Loving Spencer project for October is Pastor Appreciation The work of a pastor often is underappreciated. It's much, much more than just Sunday morning. October is Pastor Appreciation Month, and so for this month's project we want to give honor where honor is due and be intentional about letting our pastors know that they are truly appreciated. See the October Herald ideas. Bethany Lutheran Church will host the Sweet Stop on Halloween. This is a fun community outreach event. Folks are needed to help run treat stations and donations of wrapped candy are needed. Please consider helping out. Be on the lookout for a display with more information coming soon! The Book Study Group will be discussing their latest read on October 10. Their selection is a book of thought provoking essays and poems about race, Fire This Time by Jesmyn Ward. There is still time to read the book and join the discussion in the parlor on Monday, October 10 at 7pm! The November worship volunteer sign-up is available at the Welcome Center! It has been determined that we will return to two services in November when Pastor Jen comes to Bethany. This means more volunteers will be needed. Please look over the sheet and sign up to help where you are able. Thanks! The Iowa Child Advocacy Board is looking for 2 individuals to serve on the local (Clay) Foster Care Review Board. This board meets every other month (at Bethany Lutheran Church) to review children in Clay and O Brien County who are in Foster Care. Interested individuals must pass a background check and complete 8 hours of pre-service training. Upon completion, they will be sworn in by the local Juvenile Judge. Interested individuals, please contact Melissa Loehr at melissa.loehr@dia.iowa.gov or The Court Appointed Special Advocate Program is looking for advocates! A CASA is a trained community volunteer assigned by a judge to represent the best interest of a child who has been abused and neglected. The CASA visits the child monthly and maintains contact with all involved in the case. CASA s are required to regularly submit reports to the court describing how court orders are being followed and offering recommendations. Background checks and 30 hours of pre-service training are required.
