Green symbolizes the renewal of vegetation, living things and the promise of new life. It is used for the two seasons that focus most directly on continuing life in this world: Epiphany and Pentecost. Epiphany focuses on the life of Jesus as a human being, and Pentecost focuses on the life of the Church. At our 8:30 a.m. service, as a part of the Milestone Ministries at Bethany, we will celebrate the Anniversary of Baptism milestone. All children who were baptized at Bethany in the past year will receive a gift and be recognized.

2 Holy Communion is served at both services. All who seek Christ s true presence promised to us through the bread and wine, body and blood, are welcome and invited to commune. Wine or grape juice is available and regular or gluten-free wafers. Children are welcome to come forward to receive a blessing. Please complete a record of communion card (located in the pew racks) and place in the offering plate. 3 ANNOUNCEMENTS REMINDER: We would like all members to have a permanent nametag (kids, too!). If you are in need of a nametag or have misplaced yours we would be happy to make one for you. Look for the Need a Name Tag sign-up sheet at the Welcome Center. Visitors are encouraged to use adhesive nametags, available at the Welcome Center. Worship volunteers are needed for the month of February readers, greeters, ushers & communion servers. Please look over the schedule at the Welcome Center and sign up to help where you are able as we need to have this filled today. NOTICE: Work in compiling the February newsletter will begin tomorrow. If you have something that you d like to have included in the Bethany Herald, please turn it in to the church office by tomorrow morning. Thank you! The Annual Meeting of the Bethany congregation was held last Sunday between services. All items on the ballot were passed unanimously. If you were unable to attend the meeting, be sure to pick up a copy of the Annual Report available in the Narthex. All are welcome & invited to attend a special presentation on Tanzania this afternoon at 3pm in the church dining hall. Our Bethany ladies that attended the mission trip to Tanzania in July-August 2016 will share pictures, items they brought back, and the wonderful experience they had. Please bring any and all questions you might have and join us for this time of fellowship and hearing tales from our Tanzanian travelers. Music rehearsals this week will be as usual. Please note that Stephen will be on vacation and there will be no week night music, choir bells or ukulele group between Tuesday, January 31 and Wednesday, February 8. The Bethany Ministry Team and Church Council monthly meetings were postponed again this past week due to weather. Meetings are rescheduled for Tuesday, January 24. Some committees meet prior to the group meeting. Check with your chair to find out if your committee meets. Hoping the weather will cooperate this Tuesday! The Northwest Iowa Honor Orchestras Festival will be held Thursday, January 26 at Dordt College in Sioux Center. The event rehearses all day with an evening performance from 7-9pm in the B.J. Hahn Chapel/Auditorium. The concert is free and all are welcome. This year s guest conductor for the Honor Orchestra is Jerry Henry. Middle Schoolers will enjoy a day trip to Sky Zone in Sioux Falls on Friday, January 29. Kids in grades 6-8 (and their friends) are welcome to attend. We ll head out after the second service that day and be back by 6pm. The cost will be no more than $20. Deadline to sign up is today. Please let Katie know if you are planning to go. Thanks! REMINDER: We are looking to increase our volunteer base of projector operators & video recorders for our worship services. If you would like to join these forces, sign up at the Welcome Center. You will be contacted with information about some upcoming training sessions. Thanks!

4 Meals on Wheels is changing. For many years Bethany Lutheran Church (and several other churches in town) has helped deliver Meals on Wheels through a program with the Spencer Hospital. Last month we received word that meals through the hospital would no longer be available. However, we can still help with delivering meals to homebound individuals. Elderbridge Agency on Aging has a Meals on Wheels program in place operating out of the Spencer Area Activity Center. If you would like help deliver meals, please call Sandi Iwen at Elderbridge, at extension 7014 to get signed up. Thanks for your consideration helping as a Meals on Wheels volunteer. Remember, Bethany has adopted a snow and cancellations policy to help clarify the status of activities at the church when there is inclement weather. Regarding weekday activities or meetings, if the Spencer School system cancels classes, all events at the church will be cancelled for that day as well and the church office/building will be closed. Regarding worship services and Sunday activities, if the weather is such that it may be unsafe to travel, worship services may be cancelled. If worship services are canceled, a message will be available on the church s answering machine; simply call & press 5 to hear special weather messages. Also cancellation announcements will be posted on our social media sites and website at: (click on announcements). Cancellations will also be called in to the local radio station. The Loving Spencer January project is Extending the Hands of Jesus through service as a volunteer or the donation of items at Many Hands Market. In 2017 resolve to be there for one another as fellow members of humanity and to reach out in kindness and compassion to those in our community, for When we give cheerfully and accept gratefully, everyone is blessed. - Maya Angelou. The Many Hands Market is located at the intersection of Highway 71 & 18, and contains a vast variety of new and gently used items. They provide an opportunity for people to participate in local & global missions through the act of volunteering, donating, even shopping. One hundred percent of the proceeds raised at Many Hands Market go to support ministries locally and globally. To participate: contact Many Hands Market regarding times you are able to volunteer; bring donations to Many Hands Market (bring to the back of the store any day during open hours); or shop at Many Hands Market. Let the January Kindness Explosion Begin! Volunteers will be needed to help in the office answering the telephone and with light office work during regular office hours on Friday, January 27; Monday, January 30 & Tuesday, January 31. If you are able to help with this, look for a schedule and sign up at the Welcome Center. Thanks for your help! Bethany s community meal, The Gathering, happens on the second Thursday during the months of October through May. The next one is Thursday, February 9. There are a variety of ways that you can help: food prep, set-up, serving, clean up, providing a pan of dessert, delivering meals to our shut-in members, even reaching out to invite someone. If you love to bake and want to help, this month s dessert is cherry crisp look for a sign up at the Welcome Center.
