Without parables he did not speak to them but to his own disciples he explained everything in private. Mk. 4:34 Through his parables Jesus invites people to the feast of the kingdom, but he also asks for a radical choice One must enter the kingdom, that is, become a disciple of Christ, in order to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven. For those who stay outside everything remains enigmatic. CCC 546 Every parable of Jesus is an invitation. Unlike most teachers, Jesus did not provide answers to questions or interpret the law. Instead, he taught with parables. The word parable comes from the Greek root word parabole which means to see two things side by side. In the case of a parable, there is a simple, familiar image (e.g. a tree or seed) that is compared to a spiritual reality. This has the effect of drawing the mind to see things in new ways. Parables conceal and reveal at the same time. Jesus parables point out spiritual truth but even more basically invite the hearer to a new relationship with Jesus. The truth the parable teaches draws the hearer into a relationship of trust with the teacher. Beneath the parable itself, there is always the great teacher. Do you trust Jesus? Pope Francis urged all dads in the world to stick by their children s side, teaching them, guiding them and loving them. He held up St. Joseph as a role model for fatherhood and for all of us. St. Joseph knew how to cross the darkness of doubt, the experience of exile and fleeing from home, without ever losing faith in God and his love. Learn from him that only trust in God can turn doubt into certainty, evil into good, total darkness of the night into a radiant dawn, Pope Francis, from his audience on March 19 Households of Discipleship Challenge: On this Father s day weekend we can all learn from Jesus earthly Father. St. Joseph know what is was to doubt, to struggle to protect and provide for his family, and how to live in the world but not be of the world. Take time this week to reflect on St. Jospeh as a role model of Discipleship. Put a statue, picture or prayer card some place your hosehold will see it every day this week as a reminder of St. Joseph s model of discipleship through being Jesus earthly father. Each day you could do an activity centered around St. Joseph. You could look up St. Joseph on a Catholic website, read a book, find prayers to St. Joseph, discover what he is patron of, or just reflect on the patience, trust and love that St. Joseph had in and for God. Reflect on how Joseph cared for his loved ones, how can you imitate one of his qualities? A blessed Father s Day. When I think of my dad I am happy and sad. I recall the good times we had as a family on vacation. I remember laying in the grass on warm summer nights looking at the stars. I remember the laughter while he played with the grandkids or shouted out the answers to our Trivial Pursuit game from the other room. Many wonderful memories. I also become sad because he died over 26 years ago. None of my children ever met my father because he died six months after I was married. It is sad that my children never knew their loving grandfather. Today s reading from St Paul reflects the feelings I have for my father. We are always courageous, although we know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yet we are courageous, and we would rather leave the body and go home to the Lord. Therefore, we aspire to please him, whether we are at home or away. Dad was a tremendous role model. He worked hard, but faith and family were always more important. My dad died from cancer and through his battle he showed what it meant to be courageous for the Lord and die with dignity. My dad was an example of a faithful disciple. His fight with cancer may have ended his earthly life, killed his physical body, but his spiritual soul lives forever. Throughout his life and death he taught me how to live. Thank you Dad. I love you and miss you. Today, Father s Day, reach out to your dad and let him know how much you appreciate all that he has done for you. Prayers count too!
