2 F P C, W, V S, J 27, :00 A.M. A Thought Upon Entering: If we met you, Jesus Christ, we might not think that you were on a mission. Your talk would be of common and curious things: salt, dough, lost lambs, lost coins, paying taxes, hosting a meal, wise virgins, and foolish house builders. We would not know you were on a mission, we would think you were making sense of life, lighting up the ordinary, identifying the truth. When next you look with compassion on the world and need mission done in your way, Lord, send us. Present on Earth (Wild Goose Worship Group) T C G P G Please join in reading those parts of the service printed in bold. When this symbol ( ) precedes an element of the service, please rise in body or spirit. W A P Allegro from Organ Concerto No. 5 I C W Like a tiny seed or a li le leaven, The reign of God grows among us. Like a hidden treasure or previous pearl, The reign of God is what we desire. G. F. Handel Ushers will collect prayer requests during the first hymn. Blue prayer cards are located in pews. T I G P H 155 : Rejoice, the Lord Is King D 148 P C O Lord, our God, we confess that we do not reflect your glory. We devote ourselves to small things while you work for greater purpose. We distract ourselves with grand designs while

3 you surprise us with hidden wonders. Forgive us; restore and reorder our lives by the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, so what we may know your will, seek your way, and share your work, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. S C A P C R #466, v. 1 O for a thousand tongues to sing my dear Redeemer s praise, The glories of my God and King, the triumph s of God s grace. In other words, what does the Bible say?, what sense does or should the church make of it?, and how do we put it all into gracious and loving action in the name of Jesus Christ? The class is a follow up to the June 25 Pastoral Letter and the June 29 Open Forum. There will be additional educational opportunities in the fall. STAFF AWAY THIS WEEK: Dan McCoig, Todd & Amy Bowman are on vacation this week; Josh O Dell is on study leave Monday through Thursday of this week. SAVE THE DATE: The Church Picnic will be Sunday, August 24, 12:00 noon, in Jim Barnett Park. On that day, the whole congregation will gather for one service at 10:00 a.m. in Fellowship Hall. There will be special vocal and instrumental music. All interested in singing or playing should see Josh O Dell or Amy Bowman. HOSPITAL VISITATION New privacy rules are in place which makes it more challenging for the pastors to know if you are in the hospital. If you would like to receive a pastoral call during hospitalizations it is important that you be sure to register as a Presbyterian when you are admitted or have a family member call the church to let us know. The pastors want to be available, but are not aware unless these steps are taken. Thank you. PAT SNAPP S SUMMER HOURS are Monday through Wednesday, 8:30 a.m. till 4:30 p.m. during July and August. HELP BRING OUR GUATEMALAN FRIENDS TO VISIT The Guatemala Team is beginning the planning and fundraising for our Faith Stories Project Women s trip to visit us in October. The first step is their Passport and Visa applications. The cost is a little less than $400 per woman. If you would like to support one of the women in this process, the Guatemala Team will be in the Gathering Space to answer questions and accept your contributions. TASK FORCE ON STAFFING The Task Force on Church Staffing continues to meet. The focus has changed somewhat with Maren's change of plans and the congregation's vote to enable her to stay as Associate Pastor. The task force is now addressing the recommendation of the Youth Renovation Team to the Session regarding staffing for youth ministry. The plan is to provide a report to Session by the end of summer. Anita Jenkins is chair, and the committee consists of June Hess, Ed Pendleton, Gordon Stearns, Cindia Stewart, Michelle Sydnor, Mike Thompson, Courtney Warner.

6 NEWS FROM ETHIOPIA Since 2010, our congregation has helped pay the tuition at the Mekane Yesus Seminary in Addis Ababa for a member of the Mettu congregation named Berhanu. Our partners in Mettu selected Berhanu to be educated, trained, and ordained, and with God's direction, become the next pastor at Mettu, when the current pastor, Kes Demmi retires. We are very pleased to report that Berhanu has completed his seminary program and graduated on June 28, Stay tuned for more updates, as we hope to find a way to acknowledge his accomplishment and new ways to support our partners in Ethiopia. Please keep Berhanu, his family, Kes Demmi, and the elders and members of the Mettu congregation in your prayers. CCAP will be giving out school supplies to local students starting Monday, July 28th through Friday, August 1. Donations are being requested from the local churches to meet the needs of the children who are expected to come during the week to prepare for the coming school year. Students of all grades and ages will be invited to come to get their school supplies. Everything is welcome - book binders, notebooks, notepaper, pens & pencils, erasers, calculators, crayons, book bags and whatever you can think of. Walmart and other stores have lists of needed items for students at our local schools if you need some ideas on what to get. Your donations will make the CCAP event a true "Christmas in July" for local families who cannot afford school supplies. Please bring your school supplies for CCAP to Church and put them in the CCAP bin in the hall. We will make sure they get to CCAP for the local kids. RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE Give Love! Give Life! Join us for the First Presbyterian Blood Drive on August 11 from 2pm - 7pm. Sign up online or in the Gathering Area and help us surpass the last blood drive of 38 units! We'd also love to share your story: Why do you donate? What inspires you to donate? Or, have you been a recipient? Stories (with or without photos) can be sent to: raynacutrona@yahoo.com We also need a few volunteers to help out during the drive for just an hour or two. And, any bakers that would like to share some sweets for our donors is much appreciated, too! Save the date: next blood drive December 8th. PRESBYTERIAN COFFEE PROJECT: Reminder that Sunday, August 3, is coffee order Sunday. Please see the volunteer in the Gathering Space between the 8:30 and 10 a.m. services to order your Fair Trade Coffee. If you will not be at church that Sunday, please susan.kagey@verizon.net with your order. Your choice to purchase Fair Trade Coffee changes lives for small farmers and their families in Central American and Africa and also supports the Presbyterian Hunger Program. If we receive orders for at least four cases, delivery is expected on August 10. WOMEN S CHORUS If you are interested in singing with our women s chorus at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 10, please join us for rehearsal in the choir room on Sunday, Aug. 3, at 11:15 a.m. CALLING ALL SINGERS! We are in the process of forming a mass choir for our combined service on Sunday, Aug. 24. If you would like to be a part of the group, please join us for rehearsal on Thursday, Aug. 21, 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 23, 1:30 p.m. We hope to see you there! CHILDREN S MINISTRY Summer Children s Sunday School - During all of July and August, there will be Summer Sunday School during the 10AM service beginning at 10 and ending at 11 in the Stine Room. We have a special curriculum to accommodate kids age 3-completed 4th grade, and it will be a fun time for all involved. Nursery will also be offered for children 0-2 as usual during 10:00 church. Worship and child care at the combined 8:30 summer service will be as usual. Weeknight Night Summer Children s Programs There are 2 more Wednesday evening programs planned for August 6, and August 20th from 4:30-7:00 which will include rec time, a meal and a mission project. Register for Wednesday night programs at the Children s Ministry table or by ing todd@fpcwinc.org. Donate items to help area homeless and disadvantaged children. For the August 6 th children s event we will be assembling packages to share with area homeless children and other disadvantage kids through child-serving agencies in our area. Each package will contain a book, which encourages reading and family bonding, a security blanket,

7 which can be cuddled, and a stuffed animal, which can become a cherished friend. If you would like to donate any items to help with this project, you may place new blankets, new or gently-used children's book, and new stuffed animals in the box just outside the sanctuary in the main hall. We would like to have all donations by August 3rd so we can gather additional items prior to the Wednesday program. Our annual Blessing of the Backpacks will be Sunday, August 10th at the 8:30 service and at 11:00 in the Stine Room following Children's Sunday School. August 10th is the day before many students will have their first day of school. All students are invited to bring their backpack with them on the 10th as we share a prayer and blessing over each student in preparation for a new school year.
