Ushers will collect prayer requests during the first hymn. Blue prayer cards are located in pews. Please refer to the second half of the bulletin for more information about First Church. THOUGHT UPON ENTERING Though we may now think some sins light and little, if the Lord awaken the conscience, we shall feel even the smallest sin heavy upon our souls. Matthew Henry, minister and author Gathering PRELUDE Lift High the Cross Busarow WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS INTROIT Precious Jesus Jay Althouse Erik Irgens, baritone CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: We will give thanks to you, O Lord, and call on your name. We will make known your deeds among the peoples, sing you our praises and tell of your wonderful works. All: Glory in God s holy name! Let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice. When it comes time to serve you, we are not that zealous to act. We do not pray as we ought, nor do we seek your guidance often enough. Forgive us, O God, our wayward behavior and help us to live in harmony with one another, thereby through your grace and mercy may we live peaceably with all. Amen. (Silence for personal confession) DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS

7 dantalk Friends: Vacation was wonderful. Lisa and I spent two weeks out West exploring some of our nation s finest National Parks. They truly are treasures. We also saw the total eclipse of the Sun. God does nice work. While away I was somewhat insulated from some of the events capturing the headlines in the media. This is not necessarily a bad thing. But, back to reality. Jesus own retreat to solitary places was only momentary before he returned to embrace and engage his community. What happened in Charlottesville was horrifying. Having a somewhat working knowledge of human history, I cannot put my finger on any time or place where hatred addressed the problem properly and resolved it. I just can t. And, as a Christian, dehumanizing another person is always out of bounds. The Christian community has dehumanized persons in the past with tragic results. It s time to be done with that. Granted, in time municipalities will have to adjudicate what, if anything, to do about public statuary from other historical moments but there are processes and venues for this. Perhaps the Christian community can model how persons can best relate and speak to one another even when folks hold very different commitments. This is a dream of mine. And, of course, there is the millennial flooding in Texas and Louisiana. Quite frankly, it s beyond comprehension. I can t begin to imagine what it must be like to lose everything home, livelihood, community... Everything. The restoration will, I imagine, take years. We are now twelve years on from Hurricane Katrina and there remains work to be done. Thankfully there are organizations like Presbyterian Disaster Assistance [PDA] that step up and step in with expertise and resources to help communities beset by disaster to begin to hope and to rebuild. I love PDA s motto Hope Out of Chaos. I encourage all of us to pray for neighbors in Texas and Louisiana who are in a very difficult place at the moment. I also encourage us to make a monetary gift either to PDA [see the September 3 worship bulletin insert] or the American Red Cross toward the relief effort. Peace, Dan Coming Up DISCOVERING FPC FALL EDITION Begins next Sunday September, 10, Led by Bob Lizer. Donegal House. This class is a four-week exploration of the life and ministry of First Presbyterian Church for persons who may sense a call from God to unite with the congregation as a partner in mission. HELP IS NEEDED TO PREPARE COMMUNION AT 8AM WORSHIP We are asking that you consider taking one month of communion preparation during the trial period: Sept. thru Dec. Responsibilities include: preparing bread and juice; setting table includes placing table at center of worship area in sanctuary; arranging elders to serve with the pastor(s)- we will need 2-3 elders; cleaning up plates and chalices after the service. If you are willing to take on this responsibility or know of someone who might like to do this quiet but significant service for members of First Presbyterian Church, please call or mfjeffries@comcast.net. REGISTER FOR SUNDAY SCHOOL With the start of a new year we ask all parents to complete a new Sunday School registration form. Blank forms are on the CM table in the main hallway or families can register online at: All children 2-12th grade can be included on one form. 1ST GRADERS On September 10th we will welcome all our 1st graders to join with the older children, youth, and adults in worshipping together for the entire worship hour. Our first graders are welcomed to participate in WOW up until that day. Parents make sure your children have the opportunity to use the larger worship bag and the Children s Own Worship Library outside the sanctuary. We hope these will be helpful resources for your child as they worship. CM SUNDAY NIGHT SERVE Join us for the first gathering of Sunday Night Serve starting on Sunday, September 10th from 5-6pm. Kids (age 3 thru 4 th grade) will complete a service project for International Justice Mission, and then spend some time fellowshipping and playing together once it s complete.
