3 Friday 26 July Saturday 3 August 2019 The historic festival returns to Gloucester with a star-studded line-up of soloists and our in-residence Philharmonia Orchestra in a programme that s sure to excite. With over 70 events over nine days, we re offering a cornucopia of choral-orchestral classics. Chamber music recitals include James Gilchrist, the Carducci Quartet and Roderick Williams, while our late-night programme includes an enticing range of jazz and world music. Sunday 28 July am Festival Eucharist 5.30 pm Choral Evensong 7.45 pm Verdi Requiem By turns terrifying and beautiful, Verdi s Requiem is known for its exquisite melodies and depth of emotion, as one might expect from the master of Italian 3ChoirsFestival 3ChoirsFestival THREE CHOIRS FESTIVAL GLOUCESTER Monday 29 July am Rodolfus Choir The vibrant young choir returns in a programme inspired by peacefulness and serenity, sure to be an oasis of calm and reflection during a busy week. 2 pm Celebrity Organ Recital: John Scott Whiteley The dynamic John Scott Whiteley performs the premiere of a new commission by James MacMillan and Bach s densely intricate Prelude and Fugue in F minor pm Choral Evensong 8 pm Rachmaninov Vespers Ex Cathedra perform Rachmaninov s sublime unaccompanied choral masterpiece, expressing a deep and introspective faith in the most beautiful terms. Tuesday 30 July 11 am The Armed Man Our Youth Choir performs Karl Jenkins popular The Armed Man, and the UK premiere of a dramatic setting of an excerpt from Moby-Dick by Giles Swayne pm Choral Evensong 7.30 pm An English Requiem Joubert s English Requiem charts a trajectory from despair to bright hope, and Elgar s contemplative Cello Concerto is performed by the captivating Natalie Clein. Wednesday 31 July 3.30 pm Choral Evensong 7.45 pm Israel in Egypt One of Handel s most dramatic and exciting oratorios, Israel in Egypt tells the biblical story of the Israelites slavery in Egypt and their escape across the Red Sea. Thursday 1 August 4.30 pm Chilcott Christmas Oratorio It s Christmas in August! We bring you the best of the festive season in Britten s beautiful A Ceremony of Carols, and a new work by Bob Chilcott pm Summer Nights Our orchestra-in-residence, the Philharmonia, presents three visionary orchestral pieces under the assured baton of Martyn Brabbins. Friday 2 August 11 am Mendelssohn s Octet A chance to see some of the familiar faces of the Philharmonia in a chamber setting, culminating with Felix Mendelssohn s decadent Octet pm A Sea Symphony Behold, the sea! This nautical programme brings together two contrasting works imbued with a sense of adventure and the mighty power of the sea pm Meditations on the Rig Veda This meditative event weaves together Vedic chant led by members of the Bhavan centre with choral settings of these Hindu texts. Saturday 3 August 1.15 pm Last Train to Tomorrow This poignant piece performed by children reimagines the Kindertransport and the thoughts and feelings of the Jewish children fleeing persecution pm The Mystic Trumpeter We look heavenward for our final performance. We warmly invite you to come and hear inspirational stories, praise and worship, a Gospel choir and a message from well known evangelist J John. One ticket admits two, so bring along someone interested in investigating the person at the centre of this message of hope - Jesus Christ. Admission is free with a retiring collection in aid of Cathedral Music Looking Ahead The Moon Lands in Gloucester JULY Monday 1 July 1.30pm Informal Lunchtime concert East Tennessee State University Chorale Conductor: Dr Matthew Potterton The choir has toured throughout the United States and is competing in the Llangollen International Choir Competition in July. Music covers the Renaissance to newly composed works. Admission free Part of a series of city-wide events celebrating 50 years since the Apollo moon landing, experience the Museum of the Moon, a 3D floating artwork by UK artist Luke Jerram: a fusion of lunar imagery, moonlight and surround sound composition created by BAFTA and Ivor Novello award winning composer Dan Jones. Coram Boy Events MAY Friday 3 May Friday 28 June 10.00am - 12noon Adult Learning Photography Course Committee Room, Church House, Gloucester Cathedral This eight week Adult Learning Photography Course led by Adult Education Gloucestershire will use the Cathedral as inspiration for beautiful photographs. Participants will learn how to get the best from a digital camera and take better photographs. This course is aimed at those who would like to increase confidence and learn skills for personal development and/or to return to work. Equipment is provided but you are welcome to bring your own camera. Alexander Ashbrook is heir to the magnificent Ashbrook Estate, but he would rather study music at Gloucester Cathedral and work with the composer, Handel. Otis Gardiner, a local tinker, is unbeknownst to the Ashbrook family using the Ashbrook Estate for some very dark deeds. Two young boys who have grown up in a London orphanage are sent out to work for the first time. Each of them is unaware that their lives are deeply entwined, and many secrets come to light as the drama unfolds. Coram Boy was written by the Stroud-based author Jamila Gavin and won the Whitbread Children s Book Award. Don t miss the chance to see this incredible story performed in the very place where it is set, Gloucester Cathedral, by a large community cast and choir made up of adults and children. 11 Events...wowed by the talent, colour and creativity Wearable Art Competition Events JUNE Saturday 1 June and Saturday 20 July 10.30am pm Song Writing Workshops for Young People Parliament Room Workshops for young people aged This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in using music to tell stories and express ideas, and is keen to try song writing or improve song writing skills. The workshops will be led by experienced musician and producer George Moorey who will share skills, writing exercises, tips and techniques to help develop creativity, get inspired and turn ideas into songs! Spaces 5 per workshop but must be booked in advance. Lunch and refreshments included. Under 16s must have parent or guardian s permission to attend. The first of our SGS Alumni events, and we welcome you all to see what they want to showcase! 8.15pm Wearable Art Competition ACP present the Wearable Art competition and catwalk. Entrants are invited to produce a wearable art outfit, taking the themes of Biomimicry or Robotics as inspiration. 12 Events JULY Exhibitions JUNE Exhibitions Saturday 13 July 11.00am 3.00pm British Festival of Archaeology: Archaeology Roadshow The Knife Angel At Gloucester Cathedral June 2019 Cathedral Green We are joined by Kurt Adams, Finds Liaison Officer for Gloucestershire & Avon who will have a variety of archaeological finds from the local area on display and even some handling items to bring history Commissioned by the British Ironwork Centre in Shropshire, artist Alfie Bradley created the 27-foot-high statue, made up of over 100,000 knives either confiscated by police or handed in at knife amnesties across the UK. to life. Kurt is happy to identify your finds so if you have unearthed something you want to know more about, bring it along! Admission free The Cathedral is glad to act as host of the Knife Angel, which brings an important message of peace, community safety and remembrance. Angels stand for hope and an abiding confidence in the love of God. Displaying works inspired by the spaces, history, faith and traditions of Gloucester Cathedral produced by groups who have been part of our Creative Communities programme. Includes photography by students from Bridge Training Centre, pieces from the Cathedral s Artists in Recovery Group (AIR) and work by Leckhampton Court Hospice s Artist in Residence. Arriving by Public Transport The Cathedral is located in Gloucester Town Centre and is located within easy reach of the main railway and bus station. It is a minute steady walk. Look out for Finger sign posts that will point you in the right direction. Parking Parking in the Cathedral Close is restricted to pass holders only.
