2 New Year Greetings From Pastor Jim McClain 100 day report (More or Less) Our first 100 days together have been exciting and wonderful for me. I have enjoyed getting to know many of you though the cottage meetings, serving together and watching you lead a variety of worship experiences. Through over 20 small group Cottage meetings including close to 200 individuals, we have talked, listened, planned and dreamed about what God has done, is doing and will do through Windcrest United Methodist Church. We have worshipped together over 60 times, grieved together through 8 funerals and shared countless meals. I have met with the leadership team several times to help understand their mission and governance. Together we are establishing a vision and direction for moving Windcrest UMC forward towards your hopes and dreams for God s church. Most of you who were able to participate in one of the cottage meetings shared that you valued the friends you have made and the loving welcome you received. You spoke of special invitations from members of the church and home visits from people like Rev. Joan Ahrens, Rev. Ray Davis and a few remembered being visited by Rev. Roy Hilliard when the church was started in Many shared how the military brought you to San Antonio and this was the closest United Methodist Church to your new home while others talked about other reasons they are in San Antonio and driving past several other churches because of the reputation of the Weekday School or some other ministry. You spoke of classes, ministries, and programs that helped shape your life and opportunities to reach others, serve the least, last and lost or minister to the needy because in helping them your heart is changed. When you spoke of your hope and dreams for Windcrest UMC, you longed for days remembered, a variety of expressions of faith in worship and reaching young families starting on their faith journey as newly marrieds or parents. You spoke of the challenge visitors might face and those their attendance in worship might bring. Some of you share a concern that the church you love and have served for many years will not be the congregation remembered in your wedding photos, had your children baptized in and now anticipate conducting your funeral. Some of you are concerned the church is no longer meaningful and relevant to those seeking a way to explore and develop their faith. A few wonder if the church will remain financially viable. If you were not able to attend one of the scheduled Cottage meetings or your invitation seems to have been lost in some space time continuum, please let me know. I am looking for hosts for more conversations and especially a way to hear from those who fell outside the normal contact of the church. You may create your own group, invite me to an existing group or attend another group. I am also available for lunch or coffee most days if you are more comfortable one on one. See You Sunday, Pastor Jim McClain 2/January 2019

4 Spiritual decluttering: A fresh start for a new year A UMC.org Feature by Joe Iovino One of the wonderful things about each new year is that it brings with it a sense of a new beginning, 365 days of promise and possibility. Some use this time to bring freshness to their lives. They may decide to declutter the junk drawer, attic, or garage. It may also mean removing many of the sugars, fats, and carbohydrates from our diets. As a United Methodist church member, parting with some things for a season, may help declutter your spiritual life. Doing so helps make room for a new movement of the Holy Spirit in the months to come. What might you set aside in the next year? Your pew Pastors often know where each member of their congregation sits each Sunday. Some of us worship from the very same pew every week. More of us tend to gravitate toward the same general area, like somewhere in the last two rows on the right. Choosing to worship from a new seat for a season will give you a new perspective literally. You will see the service from a different point of view, but more than that, it may also change the people around you each Sunday, the usher with whom you interact, the members of the choir or praise team you can see, and more. All of this can help you stay more focused on the worship service as you see things a little differently. Time-wasters John Wesley instructed his pastors to Never trifle away time (2012 Discipline d.19.a). Instead, they were to be engaged in the practice of ministry or the development of their spiritual lives. While we may not want to get rid of all time-wasters since we need times of rest, there are diversions we could remove and replace with something more beneficial. Consider finding ways to free up time to volunteer at a local food bank or other mission, to make regular calls to old friends and church members you no longer see, or join a class or small group at your church. 10 10/January 2019 Windcrest UMC January Mission Focus

11 Windcrest UMC January Mission Focus Project Transformation is a faith-based ministry of the Rio Texas Conference of the United Methodist church that meets the challenges of the 3 Cs Children College Church Engaging in ministry through summer literacy camps for children from low-income neighborhoods. In 2018, we served over 200 children. 95% of those children maintained or improved their reading level. Developing principled Christian leaders is our primary work with the college interns we recruit, hire and train to run the summer literacy camps. These interns spend Fridays learning about ministry and service as career fields. 74% of the interns increased their knowledge of working with marginalized communities. Re-anchoring and renewing congregations is the work of site and partner churches. PT provides the chance to develop disciples through outreach into neighborhoods members might not be exposed to. 24 site and partner churches made this big work possible! Partner Churches meet the challenges of the 3 Cs through the 3 Ps Prayer Profit People Pray for Project Transformation, our interns (you will be given specific names), our children and their families, our site churches, and our impact. Please include these prayers in worship and prayer ministries. Make a financial contribution to the ministry. One intern cost approximately $3500 and the return could be your next pastor. Support one child for the summer, $1200. We love special offerings! And of course, we love book and supply drives. We want to hire interns from your congregation. Recruit your college students to work for us. In the summer, we need reading volunteers and dinner providers and people willing to share their gifts. As a partner in this ministry you make it possible for us to engage young adults in purposeful leadership and ministry, support children in holistic development, and connect churches with communities. THANK YOU! Leaders Emerge. Communities Change. Lives Transform. We would love to tell you more about all that is amazing ministry of Project Transformation. Just ask. Leaders Emerge.
