And approach to the meaning restores the experience in a different form. This line is from the poem The Dry Salvages (1941) by T. S. Eliot's. I never liked T.S. Eliot. His allusions were obscure; his view of life was dark; and I had to read his poetry in both American and English literature classes which I thought was a grave injustice. But I like this line, though not in the way Elliot meant it. Meaning for Elliot was is indifferent destructiveness. The only thing one can count on, the only pattern that orders our lives, is the "agony" of time. Happiness is an illusion. This is why I do not like Elliot. There is a stronger, creative power at work in the world. (To be fair to Elliot, if you manage to get through The Dry Salvages there is a hint of hope in the poems that follow.) As we enter Holy Week, we recall once again the destructive force at its worst, when the Son of God is betrayed and executed upon the Cross. God entered the agony of our time. Yet what Jesus did robs evil of its power and unleashes a creative force which does nothing less than opens up eternity for us and shows that joy and happiness are not illusions but our true calling. The liturgies of Holy Week are ways we approach the meaning of Jesus death and resurrection. And as we approach the meaning of what Jesus did for us, the experience is restored in our lives. Life is not about indifferent destruction. Life is God s creative process for us that is only complete when we share God s life in eternity. The world may seem bleak at times. But Christ has conquered this darkness. I invite you to restore the experience that brought us salvation by gathering with the community for the Holy Triduum: Holy Thursday, Good Friday, the great Easter Vigil, and Easter Sunday. Fr. Bill April 13th, 2014 Page 2

3 Liturgy & Prayer Family Life Moments Let us Pray for the sick in our Community: Arnie Lutovsky, Kathryn Hoods-Truax, Dolores Miller, and McKinley Hoods Let us pray for those in our Community who have died: Will Franks, husband of Yvonne Franks Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani? Mt. chs.26 & 27 The crucifixion event requires us to consider the importance of shame in the Palestinian world of Jesus. (Deut. 21: 22) By dying on the cross, Jesus is without honor or respect until the resurrection. His rising reverses the meaning of his life and death. By rising Jesus has For Individual and Family Reflection Next Week's Reading April 20, 2014 First Reading: Acts 10:34a, Second Reading: 1 Cor 5:6b-8 Gospel: Jn 20:1-9 Catholic Bible is available at Reconciliation Sunday Night 7:00 PM Last opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament of Penance before Easter (unless you are in danger of death!) Liturgy Commission Meeting Notes: The Liturgy Commission held a meeting on March 25th. Topics discussed included: reflection on chapter of the book Rebuilt, past Sunday Mass experiences, possible changes to the Sunday morning Mass schedule, summary from the March 11th Leadership Team meeting, Commission Goals for 2013/2014 (completed, in process, and not yet started), Palm Sunday, Easter, and Easter season. April Liturgy Commission meeting postponed until Thursday, May 8 th. April 13th, 2014 Page 3 shattered failure and shame, and in fact conquers sin and death in a new way. One recalls the numerous Jesus sayings of unless a grain of wheat fall and dies...if you want to save your life, lose it... Looking back on Jesus life, we recall he ate with the riff-raff, and began relationships with the evildoers, he crossed over from God s side and put himself on the side of sinners in order that he might save them. On the cross he completes his life of loving transfiguration of the world. Sin must be transubstantiated into holiness through Jesus. The sin of the world is a global crucifixion of love for Jesus as he is united in solidarity with all of sinful humanity. Jesus only speaks once from the cross as he quotes Psalm 22. He does not need words, as the Word made flesh will rise to provide ultimate meaning for the faithful. A final note about betrayal, as it is an important part of Matthew s passion narrative. Everyone of us faces the collision of opposites within our lives; with the vector of cross and culture, science and humanity, crucifix or country and sacrifice with self-preservation. We seek to not betray Jesus for the sake of safe religion or ambition. We must choose wisely and pray fervently to maintain our honor before God. Joe

It may take great patience to see fruitfulness in our prayer lives as well. Keep faith in God even when He seems far away and silent, or you tire of waiting on God. You may feel tempted to return to previous ways of praying, in hopes of familiar security. Your new 40 Weeks prayer may be dry and lifeless at times, but as our recent workshop revealed, Mother Theresa and Jesus experienced struggle as well. Don t be discouraged, as fruitful prayer is not always experiencing joy and warm feelings. Sometimes we face the dark night of not feeling God s presence, don t be afraid to stay in that uncomfortable place. God is with you most especially when we feel him not. 10 Week 5 Forty Weeks Welcome to the Sixth week of our pilgrimage together. This week we seek God s grace to awaken to our affective memories. That is, we want to recall the persons, life events, and feel the emotional weight, and the heart value they have in our history. Because these significant elements often evade our conscious awareness, we need to rely on grace to reveal them. For more information or to begin this spiritual journey, go to the Lent page on our parish website.
