2 A Letter from Pastor Paul I want to return to our series on Why We Do What We Do. The last subject I wrote about in regards to our worship practices was the Kyrie. This month I would like to jump to the Hymn of the Day and the Creeds. After the sermon we sing the Hymn of the Day, which ties in with the scripture lessons and reinforces (sometimes saves!) the sermon. God s gift of music allows the message to sink deep into our souls. Then we usually say together one of the two creeds: The Apostles or the Nicene. The creeds are not prayers; rather they are a statement of core beliefs. The word creed comes from the Latin credo meaning, I believe. Reciting the creed is a chance to profess our common beliefs and ground our worship in the tradition of the ages. Both creeds go back to the earliest centuries of the Christian church. The Apostles Creed was used in the earliest church for baptisms. As adults were converting to Christianity, the Apostles Creed was a way to state very concisely, bedrock beliefs about the Trinitarian God. I believe in God, the Father Almighty I believe in Jesus Christ I believe in the Holy Spirit Almost 2,000 years later it remains a key part of our baptismal service. The Nicene Creed was hammered out by church councils in the 4 th century. It was written in response to a controversy. At that time some Christian leaders denied the full divinity of Christ while others denied his humanity. But the councils said otherwise and affirmed that God was fully in Christ. God from God, Light from Light, True God from True God This may seem like a technical dispute but the bottom line for us is this: The Nicene Creed affirms that when it comes to the reality of the human struggle including death that God has indeed been there and done that, and because of the resurrection continues to be with us as the God who has become human for our sake. 1

Take them home to enjoy! Please be sure to fill out a pink form when you sign up and turn it in the week prior to your date. Announcements The Church Office will be closed on January 1st. Happy New Year! Old Man s Breakfast: will take place on Tuesday, January 1st, at 9:00 am at Timberwoods Restaurant. Breakfast for Our Neighbors: January 12th & 22nd at 7:30-9:00 am in the New Fellowship Hall. Everyone is welcome! Calvary Seniors: will meet on Tuesday, January 8th at 11:00 am. Meet us at AJ s for lunch and fellowship. Thank you to all who helped with the "Happy Birthday Jesus" service project. On December 16th during Sunday School 36 bags were assembled and taken to BUCM. Thank you for all the donations. We were able to provide for 36 upcoming birthdays. Christian Education Committee Calvary s Council Retreat is schedule for January 12th, Saturday from 8:30 am -2:30 pm.
