2 Women of the ELCA -ThankOffering Sunday, September 29 Women of the Lutheran church have been gathering for Thank Offering services since the early 1900s. It is a tradition grounded in our celebration of community. On September 29, the congregation is invited to joyfully give thanks and praise for what God has given to us and perhaps donate to Women of the ELCA in honor of a woman who has especially touched your life. Women of the ELCA Ministry and Outreach include: Outdoor Worship & Annual Church Picnic Sunday, Sept. 22th, 10:00AM at Catawba Meadows Park On September 22nd, we will have our annual outdoor worship service and picnic at Catawba Meadows under the second pavilion (same place as last year). Worship will begin at 10:00am, there will be no Sunday School that day. Parish Life will provide paper products, ice and tablecloths. Everyone is asked to bring a covered dish and a two liter drink. Remember that Catawba Meadows has excellent trails, volleyball court and a playground, so stick around, bring your tennis shoes and enjoy the facilities. We will also Bless the Backpacks during the service. Hope to see you there! Engaging in ministry; taking action through advocacy, promoting healing and wholeness; and supporting one another in our callings. Offering anti-racism training; addressing domestic violence, commercial sexual exploitation, and human trafficking; and supporting families with special needs. Assisting participants in their desire to discern God s call in their lives and to discover their spiritual gifts through workshops, retreats, resources, scholarships, and global education. Offering grants to not-for-profit organizations, both domestic and international, that support healing and wholeness for women of all ages through the affirmation and advancement of women s emotional, physical, and spiritual health. (In 2012 Lutheran Services of the Carolinas received a grant for Improving the Lives of Homeless Female Veterans at Faith Farm near Charlotte). These Thank Offerings give all of us an opportunity to support the total outreach of Women of the ELCA. (Special envelopes will be available in the Bulletin on September 29. Checks can be made to Calvary Women of the ELCA.) 2 Dear, Calvary Family, While these last few months and all during Skip s battle with cancer, such compassion, giving and prayers have radiated around Skip and now me. There are truly no words that convey how lucky and thankful both of us were to know and feel your Christian love. Skip was very happy to be able to worship one more time are it was also his way to say good-bye. Since he has been with all of God s saints, you have continued to minister to me. So many great doors are beginning to open up to and for me, and it s your ongoing love and concern. Please know that both Andrew and I have felt we are gathered into God s arms. A special thank you to my Secret Sister. You started out with a bang. The gardenia is wonderful. I am terribly curious already. Deus Vobiscium, Beth Walborn Dear Members of Calvary, I have been overwhelmed and deeply touched by all the cards, visits, and encouragement that I have received from all of you. I have drawn strength from your concerns and am gradually improving. I hope to be among you again soon. God Bless, Steve Gregory Thank you to everyone that took time to send me a card or stopped me in church to give a hug after the passing of my son, Dean. Also a special thank you for Pastor Mike for coming over to see Dean before he went back to LA. Also to Judy for taking me to see Dean before he died. What a loving church we have. Liz Elsner THANK YOU Calvary Proclamation is published monthly by Calvary Lutheran Church, N. King Street, Morganton, North Carolina Phone Fax calvarylutheran@compascable.net. Our heartfelt congratulations to Briana Gregory on successfully completing her doctorate in Physical Therapy. She received her doctorate on May 12, 2013 from Duke University and has already begun a job at the Kennedy Krieger Institute, which is associated with John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore Maryland. Briana is the daughter of Nancy and Steve Gregory. Dear Friends in Christ, We are deeply grateful for the prayers, cards, and many expressions of your care for us during the illness and death of Betty s mother. The grace and strength of God s love is revealed through our brothers and sisters in Christ. It is good to be among family. Thankfully, Betty and Mike Riley Dear Calvary Lutheran Friends, Thank you for the lovely farewell reception you had for me after the services on July 7. It was wonderful to have the opportunity to visit with you all. I appreciate your generous monetary gift, the beautiful prayer shawl, and the lovely prayer box necklace. Most of all, thank you for allowing me the privilege of serving as your parish nurse. You will always hold a special place in my heart. In Christ s love, Jane Morrow

4 The Calvary Endowment Fund Update January - June 2013 The Calvary Endowment was established in late 2006 to provide a vehicle to make donations that keep on giving to support Calvary Lutheran Church. Funds are invested with the ELCA Foundation. As of June 30, 2013 The Calvary Endowment has slowly grown to $57, through the generosity of our members and church friends. Most donations were given in memory of, or in honor of, a loved one or friend although some members donate on a regular basis. Our thanks to the following members and friends who gave to The Calvary Endowment during the first half of 2013 (couples unless otherwise noted): Jared and Tabitha Yates gave regularly. Jim Voltmer and Wayne Giese gave in memory of Virginia Kennedy; Quez Little and Howy Copenhaver gave in memory of Harvey Zimmer; Quez Little gave in memory of Bill Miller s sister, Joe Koerner s father, Paul Gamewell s father, Skip Welborne, Jamie Moore s mother, Shirley Nutbrown, Vicar Faron s aunt, and David William s mother. Judie Huffman, Jim Voltmer and Howy Copenhaver gave in memory of Darius Bollinger; Wil Johnson, Wayne Giese and Quez Little gave in memory of Maggie Roberson; Judie Huffman, Wayne Williams, and Howy Copenhaver gave in memory of Angie Voltmer s father; the following gave in memory of Steve Yount Rich Duncan, Chuck Moll, Quez Little, Wil Johnson, Judie Huffman, Charlie Buckner, Wayne Giese, and Howy Copenhaver. Chuck Moll gave in memory of J.C. Burnett; Chuck Moll and Howy Copenhaver gave in memory of Chuck Moll s brother; Charlie Buckner, Wil Johnson, Quez Little and Wayne Giese gave in memory of Charlie Edwards; Wil Johnson gave in memory of Shirley Nutbrown; Charlie Buckner, Chuck Moll, Quez Little, Wil Johnson, and Howy Copenhaver gave in memory of Betty Glasbrook; Quez Little, Chuck Moll, Charlie Buckner and Howy Copenhaver gave in memory of Polly Csercsevits. In June the Church Council voted to have The Calvary Endowment transfer $3, to the General Fund to pay all organ maintenance/repair fees from 2008 to the present and to pay for all future costs. There are many ways you can support The Calvary Endowment. Some contribute on a regular basis, others as a lump sum or memorial or honor. You can contribute cash, stock, bonds, land, or perhaps remember The Calvary Endowment in your will or trust or as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy. We are fortunate to have Christine Duncan, who is the NC Synod Director of Planned Giving, as a member of our team so if you have questions or need help please contact her or one of the Endowment Board members. Current Endowment Board members are Chuck Moll, Chairman, Christine Duncan, Henry Sain, Steve Wilson, Chris Kern, Council representative, and Howy Copenhaver, Secretary/Treasurer. It is the Endowment Board s policy to keep the amount of gifts private and publicly acknowledge a gift only if the giver agrees, although we like to show the Church s appreciation for all gifts.
