Invite your friends and neighbors and take a short trip down the road for good food and fellowship. When: May 13 th at 11:30 AM Where: Biscuits in Bethany Village Reservations: Signup at Signup Central this Sunday or call Molly. Many thanks for your continued support of our neighbors during this period of slow economic growth. The May item is fruit juice (unbreakable containers). The monthly food items are suggestions to give you some idea of what is needed; it is not intended to limit your donations to just those items. Please check the expiration dates on food that you donate. Food that is past the expiration date or very close to expiration will have to be thrown away. If you would rather donate cash put it in an envelope marked Food Bank or make a check payable to the Oregon Food Bank and put it in the offering plate. Are you hiding your musical talents? Won t you volunteer to provide special music one of the 15 Sundays this summer while the choirs take a well-deserved break? Contact Jody Jones. Spring Adult Sunday School Class In this five-session DVD-based Adult Education class, Who Is This Man?, John Ortberg reveals how Jesus made an inescapable influence on our world; and you will learn how you can make one too! Jesus is history s most familiar figure. His impact on the world is immense and non-accidental. Who Is This Man? illustrates how Jesus influence has swept over history, bringing his vision for us to lead lives of dignity, compassion, forgiveness, and hope. And He continues to inspire and challenge humanity today. Remaining sessions include: 4. Why It s a Small World After All 5. Three Days That Changed the World. Join us as this amazing series continues! SUNDAY MORNINGS IN THE CE BUILDING, RM 1.

5 Music of the North Come hear the music of the Nordic Countries. The Scandinavian choruses of Portland invite you to come and join them in the Activity Center on May 18th. We will hold a silent auction beginning at 2:30pm. We have many great items from yummy food, to services, restaurant gift certificates and more. This will end at 3:50pm and our FREE concert will begin at 4:00pm. We will sing music from Iceland, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. Refreshments will follow. If you have any questions about the concert, please speak to one of the choir members who attend Bethany. Jerry or Jody Jones, Alana Mapes, Gayle Grossen or Hélène Mock. Hope to see you on May 18th! Assoc. Pastor Nominating Committee The Associate Pastor Nominating Committee is meeting weekly. Currently we are reading Personal Information Forms from candidates that are either self-referrals, or computer matched to our Ministry Information Form by Presbytery. The process is moving along on our projected time schedule, and we will continue to update you as we move to the next steps. AARP Driver Safety Class Drivers who are 55 years and older who wish to take the AARP Driver Safety program here at Bethany, sign up at Sign-Up Central!! In order to have the class on our campus, we need at least 15 participants. The sign-up sheet is for a show of interest. Once we have 15 or more persons interested, we will proceed with making arrangements for time and space. No date or time has been established yet. If you have questions, please contact Hugh Taylor or Frank Johnson. AND, if you re interested in attending this course at a different location, Frank Johnson has a list of dates and places where it will be taught over the next two months. Shipmates Meeting Next Sunday May 18 is the date! The Shipmates quarterly meeting is just around the bend! Join us for lunch following Fellowship Hour (with your own sack lunch) and get ready to hear guest speaker, Rev. Dr. Timothy Cayton: Retired Administrator of Religious Services for the Oregon Department of Corrections ( ). Prior to joining the ODOC Tim served as Mission Co-Worker for the Presbyterian Church (USA) in Kenya and later as National Country Director for World Vision International in the war-torn African country of Burundi. Following college at Portland State University in 1969 Tim became a Peace Corps volunteer in West Africa, was awarded law degrees from the University of Paris and George Washington University School of Law in the 1970 s, served as Legal Specialist for the US Library of Congress, Washington, D.C. and earned a Doctor of Ministry from the San Francisco Theological Seminary. In retirement Tim is an organic blueberry farmer in Silverton Oregon, an avid horse rider and remains active in international missions. For more information, contact Hugh Taylor! Weird Animals are coming to Bethany Presbyterian Church! Mark your calendars! This year's Vacation Bible School will be July 21-July 25 (Mon-Fri) from 9 a.m. to noon. Registration will begin soon for Weird Animals, where Jesus' love is one-of-a-kind. Admission is free. Kids 3 years-old through 5th grade are welcome. Older kids and teenagers may get a peek at the unique through volunteer opportunities. In-Home & Dinner Groups I m hearing good news about the In-Home and Dinner Group participation. Remember, this is an adult activity...we all love well-behaved children, but sometimes it s nice to just have adult conversation. If you have any questions or need help, please let me know.

6 After four meetings I (Janet Smith) will make new groups. Some groups are large since people wanted to be added after the deadline, so next time I will make sure the groups are smaller (6 to 8 people). Until then...enjoy! Say Hello! To Rafael Please welcome Bethany s new maintenance person, Rafael Chávez. Rafael is joining our Bethany staff to help out with all of the myriad maintenance details that constantly pop up here on the Bethany campus. Rafael has experience in plumbing, electrical, and all types of maintenance. He has worked at another local church and is also a part-time pastor. We believe he will be a great addition to our staff at Bethany. Be sure to give him a warm welcome when you see him! Esther Circle Summer Schedule Esther Circle, which meets on the second Thursday of each month at 9:30am in the Church Library, will be taking the months of June, July, and August off. We ll see you rested and refreshed in September, and ready to once again dig into God s Word! Please contact Launa Zurbrugg if you have any questions. FAITH IN ACTION 2014: Once again this spring, Bethany will sponsor a full day of community service and celebrate at worship the following day. We will offer 8 community service projects on May 31 from 9 am to noon and celebrate our service on June 1 during the worship service. Please plan on signing up for one of these projects: Lap quilts and prayer shawls. Susan Gillespie, Team Captain. Finish a quilt and start a new one, or knit/crochet a prayer shawl for a shut-in.
