1 Bethany Presbyterian Church Portland, Oregon Order of Worship for March 22, The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai: 2 Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me. 3 But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from thelord. 4 Then the Lord sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up. 5 All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep. 6 The captain went to him and said, How can you sleep? Get up and call on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us so that we will not perish. 7 Then the sailors said to each other, Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity. They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah. 8 So they asked him, Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What kind of work do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you? 9 He answered, I am a Hebrew and I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land. 10 This terrified them and they asked, What have you done? (They knew he was running away from the Lord, because he had already told them so.) 11 The sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked him, What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us? We are a Stephen Ministry Church

Worship and Communion Service THURSDAY, APRIL 2, 7 PM. Calendars! Mark Your On the night of His betrayal, Jesus shared His last Passover meal with His disciples. It was the night that Jesus shared His parting words with His disciples and with us. This is a wonderful way for young people to understand the meaning of communion. Please plan to join us for this very special night during Holy Week. Thanks from the Blantons I would like to express our family s thanks for all the prayers and support we were provided during my Father s illness and death. We truly needed those prayers. I am completely at peace with Dad s passing as he passed on his own terms. I wanted to relate something that my Dad told my Uncle shortly before he died. In the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer there is a prayer of forgiveness which Dad found and read. After reading the prayer Dad asked for forgiveness from everyone that he had offended during his life. Dad told my Uncle that after that prayer, he felt a peace he had never before known. Blessings from all the Blanton family. One Great Hour of Sharing Offering One Great Hour of Sharing Offering will be collected on Palm Sunday March 29th. Look for pew envelopes marked One Great Hour of Sharing. Thank you for your faithful giving. Presbyterians have joined with millions of other Christians through One Great Hour of Sharing to share God's love with people experiencing need. Our gifts support ministries of disaster response, refugee assistance and resettlement, and community development that help people find safe refuge, start new lives and work together to strengthen their families and communities. 6 Attention 3rd graders parents! It has been the tradition at Bethany to give 3rd graders Bibles during the Palm Sunday service. Please let Jody Jones, Carol Faber or Janet Mills know if you have a 3rd grader. We do not want anyone to be left out! Thanks! Egg Hunt Volunteers Would you like to help out during the egg hunt on Saturday, April 4? That can be arranged! We d love to have you and we always need volunteers that day to help hide eggs, herd the young uns, and clean up when it s all said and done. If you d like to lend a hand that morning, sign up at Sign-Up Central during Fellowship Hour in Fellowship Hall. For more info, contact Gail Hamilton. Easter Breakfast Volunteers Needed It s almost Easter!! The youth will be sponsoring the Easter breakfast for Bethany with ALL the profits going to help fund every middle/high school student to attend the Bethany Beach Blast in September. We need help baking the multitudes of rolls and preparing the fruit and egg casseroles for our delicious Easter breakfast! We will be working in the Activity Center kitchen on Saturday April 4th. There is a signup sheet in the Fellowship Hall. Please consider donating a few hours on either Saturday or Sunday (for serving and clean up). We will begin early and work until we are done with our baking, table setup etc. That is usually about 3 to 4pm. We will begin at 7:00am. Can you help us out and get to know our wonderful youth a little bit better?? Any questions, contact Jody Jones or Amanda Jones. Ready for Bethany Beach Blast 2015?!) It s not too early to mark your calendars for the Bethany Beach Blast! (previously known as Family Camp), September at Camp Magruder in Rockaway, Oregon. There are accommodations for families, a women s and men s dorm as well as one for youth guys and youth girls! There are also motels available within about 5 minutes for those of you who are interested. So, SAVE THE DATE! We will begin to take reservations in early May. Consider joining your Bethany family for some fun this summer! EVERYONE IS INVITED!!! Lots of Opportunities As Spring and Summer approach, there are many events that we all look forward to: The Easter Egg Hunt, The Last Supper Reenactment, Sonrise Service, Easter Breakfast, and more. All of these events require tons of planning, coordination, and of course, volunteers. This is a wonderful opportunity for the Bethany church family to get involved in helping each of these events to run smoothly and not be a burden to just a few people. Please take a moment to think about how you may contribute to the life of our Bethany family by helping out in the weeks ahead. 7 It is not too early to check your calendars and reserve some time to help with the setup or selling during the sale. Sign up now and pick the times that work best for you. PRICING: We will be experimenting with a new pricing system which will be less labor intensive and hopefully create more profitable sales, and less unsold items when the sale ends. We will need more helpers (to assist buyers) during the sale. PURPOSE OF THE SALE: Rummage sales are held every two years to replenish the BPW budget. This allows us to help with various projects within the church, as well as mission projects in the community and around the world. MARK YOUR CALENDAR: In May Bethany Presbyterian Women are invited to an Ecumenical Luncheon. Betty Arrigotte, local author and spiritual counselor, will be the guest speaker. When: Tuesday, May 12 at 11:30a-1:30p Where: St Pius Catholic Church 1280 NW Saltzman Rd. Portland, FOOD BANK: The March food items are pasta, rice, or dried beans. The monthly food items are suggestions to give you some idea of what is needed; it is not intended to limit your donations to just those items. Please check the expiration dates on food that you donate. Food that is past the expiration date or very close to expiration will have to be thrown away. If you would rather donate cash put it in an envelope marked Food Bank or make a check payable to the Oregon Food Bank and put it in the offering plate. KITCHEN: When you sign-up for coffee after worship Bruce will attach Helpful Hints for Fellowship Time After Worship (they are also in the quarterly newsletter and on the kitchen bulletin board) to your reminder that you will receive during the week before the Sunday you will be serving. We hope this will be helpful and make the morning go smoothly for Sunday Coffee Hour volunteers. China Mission Easter Items Sale We have just received some beautiful Easter things from the mission group that we work with in China. They are all Easter themed and will be available for purchase on Sunday the 29th during Fellowship time after church. The mission, Hearts and Hands, works out of Kunming, China in Yunnan province. They came into China over 10 years ago to teach Mandarin sign language to the deaf. They also teach a trade and about God. Most of their workers have converted to Christianity over the years and then they eventually take the trade, sign language and Christianity back to their small villages throughout China. We purchase their items and sell them for exactly what we pay for them. In this way, we can help them employ more people and spread the word of Christ into a broader community. Please come and take a look at their beautiful handcrafts! Nursery Needs Volunteers We are so blessed to have some little ones who need to be cared for in the nursery on Sunday mornings! As a result, we need a few additional helping hands in there! We are looking for both adults and youth who would be willing to take a turn once every 4-6 weeks. Thank You From the Moe Family Dawn Moe called to say that their son, Collin, has turned the corner and is doing much better as of Friday morning (Mar. 20). She wants to thank everyone at Bethany for the care and prayers they received throughout Collin s ordeal. Thank you, Bethany!

8 Tasty Easter Pastries! Preorder your rolls to have ready for your Easter morning! These are all fresh and freeze great for later use. ALL profits will go to pay for youth to go to the Bethan Beach Blast in September! Can you help our youth and have delicious rolls in your freezer?? Veggie Herb Rolls: These taste like turkey stuffing and Thanksgiving! They have carrots, celery, onions, sage, thyme and buttermilk in them. They are very hearty, terrific with a bowl of soup for dinner, or with cheese as a sandwich. $10 per dozen Golden Squash Crescent Rolls: These are super light and fluffy roll made with homegrown butternut squash. They have a lovely golden color from the squash, but taste only like fluffy butter! Super yummy! Again, these are great for a dinner side, Or just great as a snack warmed up. $10 per dozen Almond Crescent Rolls: These are a very rich, eggy roll that is filled with butter, sugar and sliced almonds. They are rolled up and glazed with an almond flavored frosting and a dusting of more nuts. This is a Swedish recipe and those Swedes know how to make a yummy pastry. I have some that have been in my freezer over a year and are still yummy to pull out and thaw one at a time! $12 per dozen. Blue Ribbon Cinnamon Rolls: As the name indicates, these have won a number of blue ribbons at the State Fair! Again, these freeze really well. We will not frost them, but instead give you a little container of frosting to put on as you like. These come in many ways, just be specific as to what you like. You CAN mix up and say get ½ dozen plain, and ½ dozen with nuts and frosting. $12 per dozen. The pastries will be baked the day before Easter and ready for you to pick up Easter morning. If you will not be there Easter, let us know and we will freeze them for you.
