Chad Martin Wednesday, December p.m. Old Church The holidays are times of joy and celebration yet sometimes that s the opposite of where life has taken us. Whether it s a first Christmas without a loved one, a mental illness that is stressed by the holidays or other personal struggles we re facing, there are a variety of reasons why we can find this time of year a struggle. Yet God is not just with those who celebrate: the Cross reminds us he s right there with those who mourn too. (Matthew 5:4) This December s Order of St. Luke healing service will offer space to bring to God whatever is on your heart and to reflect on this truth God has not forgotten you. All classes will focus on Advent and incorporate the Christmas drama as part of their Sunday school lessons throughout the months of November and December. The class is designed for children 2 nd grade and older, but all ages are invited to attend. Parent or significant adult participation is required to help children continue learning at home. 13 OUTREACH Decorate for Christmas Monday, November 26 9:30 a.m. noon and 1:30 4 p.m Holly Hall Street Each year Holly Hall decorates the entire campus for Christmas. Trees are put up in all common areas, wreaths are placed on every door and manger scenes are displayed inside and out. Assignments will be provided when volunteers arrive, and you should dress comfortably for this project as there will be moving and walking involved. Make Sandwiches for Kids Meals Tuesday, November p.m. Activity Center, Community Room Join the Men of St. Martin s as we make sandwiches together. Kids Meals provides and distributes nutritious lunches to hungry preschool children throughout Houston. Help the Dress for Success Team Wednesday, November 28 5:45 p.m Eastside Volunteers are invited to take fruit to the Dress for Success team training for the ABB 5K. Bel Inizio helps disadvantaged women develop selfconfi dence and life skills through fitness and nutrition. Participants train to complete a 5K, which helps prepare them for the ultimate race the race for a better life. Health Care Ethics 101: Defining and Applying Core Principles Wednesday, November 28 6:30 8 p.m. Advances in health care have enabled people to live longer lives. What are some of the issues that arise with these advances? What are some of the core ethical principles and how are they applied? Join us as we review some of the cases that have led to the adoption of these principles and provide examples for discussion on how they might be applied. This CEU event is geared toward mental health professionals. Eating Disorders: Spotting Early Signs and Treatment Options Wednesday, December 5 Noon 1 p.m. Join us as we learn about warning signs if you are concerned a loved one may have an eating disorder, as well as different treatment approaches and key members in a treatment team. An Overview of Depression: Clinical vs. Situational and Treatment Options Wednesday, January 9 Noon 1 p.m. Depression is an illness that has wide-reaching implications for cost, lost productivity and impact on overall physical health. This talk will cover the prevalence, comorbidities, diagnosis and treatment of depression. The societal impact and barriers to treatment also will be discussed. Registration is required.
