And we both like books, she says. We probably have a bigger library than most towns. So far, they say things have been going really well. People have been doing their best to include us in things even outside of the church, so we are really getting a sense of the community, says Rena. When asked of any plans for changes, Pastor Rena says, Our practice is to not change anything for the first year. Unless there is something glaringly wrong and then we ll talk about it, But we never just make anybody change anything. It takes all of us to make a church. Pastor Rena adds, Visitors are always welcome out at the parsonage. The coffee pot is always on. If you re coming to see the house, call ahead so we can clean a little, she laughs. But if you re coming to see David or I, come any time. 3 Pastor Dave s Perspective 1 Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes, 2 To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, together with all those who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours: 3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 1:1-3 (NRSV) In the style of Paul, greetings to you, the Healing Waters Parish, from your newly called and installed pastors, Pastor David and Pastor Rena Peterson. We both are happy and grateful to God, who through you has given us this opportunity to serve God in your midst. We have felt, heard, and seen the excitement and energy that you have been expressing. In the three short weeks that we have had the privilege of being with you we have worshiped with you, watched as you and your youth heading to Detroit next summer had a bake sale, gone on a hay ride and roasted hot dogs with some of those same youth and adult advisors, sat in the stands at a volleyball game, gotten introduced to the neighboring congregations in the two conferences this parish is part of and become part of an upcoming event in which one of the South African visitors in our synod will be doing a presentation that will start with coffee at 4:30 pm and culminate in an evening meal on Sunday, October 4 at St. Lucas. There is still much to experience and do as we put on our running shoes and over time learn to connect names, faces and places. Along with you we look forward to the time ahead eagerly waiting to see just what God has in store for the life and ministry of the Healing Waters Parish. As the opportunities unfold before and around us, may the grace, peace, love and guidance of God surround us, fill us, and flow through us to the world in which we have been called to serve together. Amen. HWP News Christmas Wreath Sales The Healing Waters Parish youth will be selling Christmas wreaths, swags and garlands October 19th through November 7th. 7 Yellow Medicine Lutheran Church News Yellow Medicine Lutheran Church WELCA September 9, :00 p.m. President Carol Rikke welcomed members and guests. The Theme Hymn was sung. Devotions were given by Mavis Gustafson. Robbin Bendell, Granite Falls Senior Advocate, was unable to attend. President Carol Rikke gave a test about the make-up of our congregation. The business meeting was called to order. The Secretary Report from July was read and approved. The secretary read the correspondence. Co-Treasurer, Carol Tusberg, gave the treasurer report. The balance in the treasury is $4, The Mission Action report was given by Coleen Olson. Thirty-five quilts were taken to the Twin Cities. Twenty-one quilts were given to the Salvation Army. We have 5 or 6 completed quilts on hand. The Prairie Conference Fall Gathering is on Saturday, October 11th, at Bethany-Elim Church, Ivanhoe. We were reminded to use the wooden crosses on the tables at funerals and other events. They were donated by Dee Anderson. Cindy Eye reported on the cookbook sales. Forty-five were sold at the Threshing Show. Cindy plans to have them available at a craft sale in Redwood Falls in November. The Spuds & Splits fundraiser was held last year on November 3rd. It was decided not to have it this year. Carol Rikke passed out a survey on WELCA and what the attending members felt are important services done by our WELCA Groups. The survey will be available to all WELCA members. The offering was taken. We closed with the Lord s Prayer. Hostesses for September, 2014, were Cindy Eye, Cindy Velde, and Mary Ellen Anderson. Respectfully submitted, Carol Engel, Co-Secretary KETCHUP OR CATSUP? Actually, it s from the Chinese fish sauce called ketsiap. It s been around since the 1600 s. Ketchup seems to be the preferred spelling unless one is from the south, but on October 26th we re spelling it Catchup. We ve all enjoyed our summer with camping, traveling, vacations and great outdoor ctivities. Soon our snowbirds will be leaving us for the warmer temperatures of the south. At this in-between time we are asking all our members to help catch up on the budget. Ketchup or Catsup? No matter what your preferred spelling, the truth is, God puts a lot of spice into our lives. The blessings rain down abundantly. So we encourage you to give a special gift over and above what you would normally give. If everyone gave just a bit more, it could make a big difference for all of us. For a bit of fun, we are also asking that everyone bring a bottle of ketchup or catsup to church that day to be donated to the food shelf. Our youth will be hosting their Hotdish Extravanganza and Cake Walk after the service. A free will donation will be taken to help the youth with future expenses. SUNDAY SCHOOL EVENTS October 5 Children sing in church 19 No Sunday School (Education Minnesota Weekend) 26 Practice begins for Sunday School Christmas Program (continues each Sunday until program is held on December 14). 9 A letter to women in Yellow Medicine Lutheran Church, (Oh, No!!) **Please read this letter and complete accompanying survey if you are a member of WELCA.** It is time to see if we should make some changes to WELCA. We have an old official constitution on file with our church council and the synod. Here is an overview paraphrased: Who are we? Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, part of Yellow Medicine Lutheran Church and the ELCA synod. Why are we? A community of women called to discipleship to: commit ourselves to grow in faith, affirm our gifts, support one another in our callings; engage in ministry & action; promote healing & wellness in the church, society & the world. So we re to come together for a study, support and action, plus communicate with, support and participate in synodical events and projects. Who belongs? All confirmed YMLC women who participate in activities which indicate a commitment to the purposes of WELCA. Participation is open to all women of the congregation and other women who subscribe to the purpose. So, it looks like we are to study God s word, do loving things for others, get along and work with each other and support the synod. Those old-timers who wrote this weren t so dumb! Can there be changes to WELCA? If an amendment has been presented to the WELCA Board and is consistent with the WELCA purpose, the Constitution can be changed (amended) at any regular or Special meeting with 2/3 of the women present and voting. (This would be about 50 YMLC women.) On the reverse side is a survey, listing all the things the women in our church do and are involved with. The problme is that out of the 70 active WELCA members, more and more are choosing not to participate. So, what are we to do? We are especially interested to know what you younger women under 50 think this organization should look like. We want you to thank this through...what s best for our church, our God, and the women of the ELCA...not what s best for you personally. Get your completed survey to church any way you can..mail it, give it to Annette, or Carol Tusberg, Carol Engel, Jean Anderson, or put it in the box in the narthex by Sunday, October 26th. Thanks! Carol Rikke and WELCA Board Page 9 ~ October 2014
